safarigirl: I'm a CU student, and I totally agree with you there, its personal development and willingness to pursue knowledge that makes one really good( and I can tell you for a FACt that My school provides an amazing platform for that with EASE). In fact, I have never seen English speaking or writing a prove of intelligence, except of cause its ones field of study. I mean, its just a language for communication and not sophistication . But then, you fail to realise what the person you quoted was driving at. A person wrote an article or argumentative essay , what ever he intended the post to be ; with no reasonable point let alone a proper way of conveying a reasonable thought . You can say something with poor use of english , and say something with poor use of the brain (no offence) , which the fellow did; driving home no reasonable thought let alone numbers or facts to back up. About the CU student in the video(never seen it though)... People react differently under stress especially on screen, thats why some people study mass communication and some opt for engineering... And please we are also human beings , its bad to live by a single story . |

EdoBoy90: I do agree with some interesting points you raised, but then, along the line, you allowed anger towards the OP and the thread cloud reasoning and I commend your effort to articulate these nice thoughts . I would like to answer your questions and address one or two things. Question1) I feel its rhetorical , seeing as you hastily answered a question you asked Question2) Ever heard of the gas iron? Its not so popular over here , and new also, but really used industrially in china and Russia (invented with a solid patent by a graduate from my school, covenant university by the way ). You should google it, should be an interesting read. Question3) Amazing you should ask that... Try to google Wadi Benhirki as well. Many of our students (even years before they graduate have huge humanitarian foundations and are very kind hearted people...i dont know why its usually the girls anyway ) You mentioned Falana and ko, my school was not even in existence when falana started having children... (Our private schools have barely graduated 10 sets )and even him sent his children to private universities. |

Mirand606: You're seriously masturba.ting yourself to sleep, and your dying brain cells are having a hard time reviving. You must be high on cheap Ilesha weed. Gerrara hia. Private university ko, glorified primary schools where lecturers wipe students' buttocks after they poo...like in CU, ABUAD... Is that one a school, where you build slaves? Most private university students are unable to be useful to their own selves. Imagine a school where students can not cook, cannot choose not to attend religious meetings, cannot hold their heads up and boldly declare their opinions in public...'cos if they do, Bishop would literally slap the hell out of them, or Bowen would make them all kneel down for a decade... Is that one a school where over 90 % of their students population are drug addicts..? If you doubt that, ask any student or lecturer who has been at ABUAD for a while. A school where students are on permanent lockdown...where students are not allowed to make their own mistakes and learn from them... Private university education in Nigeria is poo. Including Covenant University. Yes, you heard me. Universities are places where you not just get a certificate and get a chance to compete in life, it is also a place where you pick up essential social and relational and personal attributes. Go to OAU, UI, UNILAG, UNN...etc 3 Likes 1 Share |

mat21a: Abeg free that ranking adacadabra o! Private universities cook things up and they bribe like mad. From a very reliable source (and I go see for myself) ABUAD wey no get anything...sisi, nada for their preclinical laboratories, they collect FULL MDCAN and NUC accreditation! Why? Money don change hands. Whereas, go to EKSU preclinical laboratories, you would think you were in US with the state-of-the-art equipment...and still for years dem no smell accreditation...Why? Because public universities don't bribe their way out like Private Universities who have a point to prove. Go to ABUAD and CU, you will find individuals who received their PhD in the last three (3) years who have been made professors now, just because such dubious promotions to the professorial rank and their undeserved accreditation status ranks them high... The Provost of College of Law for ABUAD, she never finish the PhD she started years ago...guess what? She is a professor. Covenant University recently dubiously promoted three lecturers into professorial cadre...Loto, Ada, and Evans. Ada got a PhD in 2013 and was until recent promotion lecturer 1 while CU lists her as Assistant Professor. Loto got a PhD in 2014 after joining CU in 2013 as lecturer 1. Between 2012 and 2017 when he was reported to author 77 publications most of which were sole authorship (quite discouraged in most academic settings) or with his dad. Evans on his own was Senior Lecturer until being so hurriedly promoted. The world over there is no other place where these dubious mediocrity is being promoted as accepted scholarly phenomena except in Nigerian private universities. In the West you do not even stand a chance, in most cases, of landing a lecturing job if all you have is a PhD degree... You have to have bagged years of postdoctoral experience in different research groups (preferably) before you get an academic contract... In Nigerian private institutions however, individuals who cannot even stand up and beat their chests that their PhD work was up to 30% their own are being made professors in just two years. The Provost of College of Medicine of ABUAD got his PhD in 2012 and by 2014, and with publication record insufficient to be considered for lecturer 1 in public universities, was made a Professor! That is simply outrageous. No wonder they continue producing academic midgets while the private universities go about looking for any form of recognition including spurious ranking, just to stay in business. Even wealthy kids that are academically sound and sure of themselves prefer to attend universities like UI, OAU etc just to prove their worth. We should stop celebrating mediocrity in Nigeria. You cannot have the kind of half-baked-fast-promotion professors in private universities and expect the students to be any better than the impostors that sire them. This post is not meant to be insulting, it's meant to be in defence of true scholarship. Not the type you think you have to pay millions of naira to get, only to come out with a piece of paper and overbloated sense of your own worth. A worth that doesn't even exist. 2 Likes 1 Share |

I graduated from uniben, chose uniben because I wanted to compete with the best, when I entered uniben in 1995 it was the school that people desired the most, how can you attend a private school and say you are competing with the best when the poor cannot afford those schools. I finished from a very good secondary school and in uniben I schooled and competed with students that finished from local schools, on the issue of criminality it's everywhere , no school teaches crime. I will never consider private uni if given a chance I was in yabatech for same reason I wanted to compete with the best. When I came to states I wanted to enroll in university of Maryland a public school but I was not admitted which is the only reason I now had to do my masters at a private university, stop fooling yourself a private uni cannot compare to a public 1 Like |

safarigirl: you are more the exception than the rule. you are far more intelligent than a lot of your compatriots on this forum the real question is how much better would you be if you attended a private university? going to a private university is a privilege that gives most people a leg up. public universities have a long way to go, especially where exposure to contemporary technology is concerned. i regularly get frustrated dealing with public school grads who have difficulties with pcs, or composing simple emails. Our Hr policy is open to all, but most of the people getting in are private school grads. those who make it from public schools are the extra bright/focused who would make it anywhere; sort of the way there is no stopping a naija first class grad if he gets out of this country [several 2,1, 2,2 naija grads are first class material in a US/Uk environment; which makes the first class guys high level performer no one with the financial wherewithal will send his kids to a public university 3 Likes |

Ishilove: i am also a a federal uni grad. but you know the standards are slipping, and a lot of us are applying stuff /skills we did not learn in school. which basically defeats the purpose. i do not know if my lecturers are now teaching up to date stuff, or if they are still teaching 1970s texts. the gaps in tertiary grads are a real thing; especially among those from less privileged backgrounds. we have a project that is going through challenges and i discussed with this guy, telling him to send me an email that i would share with executive management at some point. this is what he wrote Good day sir, that was an email that was supposed to justify a project extension due to fuel scarcity. i had run the guy through what he was supposed to write, and that was the best he could com up with. nine times out of ten, if the guy has to do any job, na cybercafe; after which he will email to us. there was another guy , a contract employee - his emails were. . . Where do you start from when there is no foundation? |

oyb:it was the financial aspect that stopped me from attending a Private University to some extent, but a Private University was never my first choice. I initially applied for Unilag, made the Merit list after Post UME, but couldn't make it during screening because I didn't have a credit in Maths. As at that time, I would have gotten the admission if I applied for a Private University. By the time I did though, there were no funds to attend that school. The initial plan was to have Private education all through, then my mum died and the plan fell through. Na condition make crayfish bend, same way condition sent many to Private Universities as well. Aside the usual CU, ABUAD, and Babcock most of the other Private Universities were not the initial choice 3 Likes |

I think there is no justification whatsoever for engaging in collective defence of educational institutions. I read a publication credited to JAMB on the number of candidates that were qualified to be admitted into the universities, and the available space/vacancies and capacities of these schools. I have family friends who struggled to pay their children school fees at the private universities not because these children could not score 200 in JAMB, but some were offered courses that are different from their choices or denied admissions. For the records, I attended public schools throughout my educational pursuits, but the obvious need to be stated. The Federal Government abdicate its responsibility by granting licences to individuals and private bodies to run universities. In a way, it has plugged the hole created by lack of capacity to admit all the qualified candidates into government universities. It has also encouraged good-spirited individuals and organisations to contribute to educational development, including expanding the frontiers of knowledge. However, there are common denominators in some professional fields where graduates from different public and private universities will converge and write qualifying examinations. For instance, Bar examinations from the Law school for Lawyers, ICAN examinations for Accountants who want to become professionals. Other professional courses also have moderated and professional examinations as a prerequisite for practice in those fields. There are instances where graduates of private universities have favourably competed with their counterparts from public universities. I think it is better to concentrate on our fields of study at the undergraduate levels, acquire other skills and competencies that are required to successfully navigate our career paths in life, rather than engaging in needless argument on the quality of graduates from public and private universities. 3 Likes |

Marcelo290: I didn't want to comment till I saw this. I agree the Madonna is a glorified secondary school but that is not the reason why the girl left. Ask her well. Madonna University has one of the highest population with 3 campuses but they hardly give first class. Last 2years, out of over 5000 students, only 7 were given first class. In terms of system, Madonna is worse than a public school with frustrated lecturers who derive pleasure in failing students. Missing scripts is very common and poor records etc. Students graduating with second class lower are more than second class upper. They give many students third class and few come out with pass. Still last 2years, they expelled over 120 students at once. The rate at which they expell students yearly makes one wonder if that's the reason why their motto is "an institution with a difference". I really don't blame her for leaving but the truth is many leave Madonna for public universities for many reasons and one of them is that they have better chances of making better grades outside that school. We still have good private universities that can beat many state universities in terms of education standard. The government is the cause. How can we have over 70 private universities in Nigeria? The NUC should look into this. |

Read what jamb says about Mock examination the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has said it will conduct its optional mock examination in January. The board made this disclosure in a statement signed by its Head of Media, Mr Fabian Benjamin and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja. “As we prepare for the 2018 examinations, beginning with the optional mock, we urge candidates to register on time, make clear their choices of institutions, disciplines and examination centres in the process. “Candidates must note that their first choice can be a College of Education, a university, an Innovation Enterprise Institution, a polytechnic or a monotechnic. joshuakdboy: Imagine a school that just started using their portal two years ago? They have poor record taking. Then, you couldn't even know your GP and sometimes, it takes over a year for lecturers to release results. The list is endless. I know many that left the school for other federal and state universities and they performed better academically. I lost touch with the school two years ago so I can't speak for now. |
