Hello Gurus in the house I applied to UMBC for an undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering. I was told to submit some docs like Int'l passport copy,Financial statement ,Affidavit of support,

My question is without submitting this won't I be admitted.

You will be admitted if you meet UMBC's Requirement, but you won't be able to get your i20 Until you submit those docs, Usually, after you are officially informed of the school's admission decision, you will be told to submit those docs to International Education services @UMBC to get your i20.

Hello all,

I am a silent follower of this thread, and I have been following ever since. I have learnt alot from the transcripts posted here.

My visa application was delayed in Lagos on the 13th of December by the guy in Window 5 . Refired again iin Lagos and was granted on the 29th December by the guy in Window 8. Below is my transcript:

VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning. Compliments of the season.
VO: Compliments to you too. Hand me your passport and i20
Me: Here they are
VO: (starts to type very fast) Oh! You were here some weeks ago, but denied?
Me: Yes, I was. (With a mild smile)
VO: So what has changed? (He looks at me intently)
Me: (starts to smile and looking at him too) Well, the last time, I felt I wasn't confident enough just because I was nervous, and I was not speaking clearly, but today I believe I am well prepared, and I have built my confidence level.
VO: (starts to type) Oh, that's good. So why are you going to the US?
Me: I am going to the US to persue a masters programme in Law with a concentration in Business Law at the University of Oregon, Eugene.
VO: (Continues typing) How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 3 schools. The university of Oregon, Case Western Reserve University and the University of Denver.
VO: (still typing) How many admitted you?
Me: Oregon and Case Western Reserve with scholarships.
VO (stops typing. Looks at me) I can see in your i20 that you'd be offering American Law as a compulsory course, so what's the relevance of that to Nigerian law?
Me: (smiles.) Thank you! (VO smiles back) Well, most business law cases that have been decided in Nigeria first got their principles from decided cases in the US. So I believe studying business law at the masters level in the US will give me that global view and that knowledge of current trends so that when I come back to Nigeria, I will be able to advise businesses and business owners on how to go about their commercial transactions within the purview of the law.
VO: (still looking at me with rapt attention) So what do you do?
Me: (Still smiling) I am an associate solicitor at a corporate/commercial law firm here in Lagos. Told him my job description.
VO: (now typing) how many are you in your office?
Me: we are just 6.
VO: (now looking at my i20) Were you offered any scholarship?
Me: Yes I was. I was offered a partial scholarship by the University of Oregon.
VO: (now looking at me) You know why you were offered? Did you take any test?
Me: No, I did not take any test. I was informed by the uni that the test was waived for me and that the scholarship was solely based on my professional and academic records.
VO: So who's paying for the rest?
Me: my dad.
VO: What does he do?
Me: He is a real estate developer and also has a construction company.
VO: Do you have a bank statement here?
Me: Yes I do
VO: Let me take a look
Me: (hands over the BS to him) here it is
VO: (Takes his time. Checks BS line by line. Types something on his system. Gives it to me back) Are you married?
Me: No sir
VO: Any Children?
Me: No sir
VO: (contines typing very fast. In my mind, I was like God these questions are too much. I don't wanna go home with my passport.) So, I will be issuing your visa. He gives me my i20 and says I will need it at the point of entry.
Me: oh fantastic. Thank you very much and have a great day.

In all, prepare well, cover all loopholes, know stuff about your programme by heart, be confident, smile and look at the VO''s face. Don't be too serious. The VO is human too. Above all, pray to God. Fast too, if you can.

God bless you all.

Hi,

@Ezeigbo1ofImo @time2smile and anyone that can help.

Wow I had no idea that STEM students could get a PhD Scholarship in America, I’m utterly impressed by that! I can so relate to the pain of paying for studies while everyone is on a scholarship- We were 6 in class and I was the only one that paid a tuition, it was so painful!

I have been silently considering a PhD in the US mostly Cos my field of computing (cultural computing/user studies) is more acknowledged in the US than the UK.

So do you guys think someone with a 2.2 and merit (BSc & MSc respectively) would be considered for a scholarship. That BSc result makes me not even bother with scholarships at all, and I was honestly preparing to pay the PhD tuition until I saw your comments. God bless you guys plenty.

I don’t really think your Bsc 2:2 would impact your chances as long as your masters GPA is good (3.5 and above)

I stand to be corrected tho

Funding for STEM PhD in the US works mostly this way: You will be given a tuition waiver and also a stipend that covers your living expenses in exchange for pursuing a PhD and working as a Teaching or Research Assistant. Heck, some schools even throw in health insurance and conference travelling allowance in too.
I don't know much about your sub-field of computing but your MSc, especially from a foreign university, should help mitigate any drawback of your BSc. GPA. Graduate admission is holistic and other parts of the application such as GRE, letters of recommendation, research experience are also considered.

In no particular order, these are the things you will need to give yourself a good chance:
1. Write GRE; A score above 320 is preferable, with at least 160 in Quant.
2. TOEFL. : Might not need this because your MSc if from the UK, but I will still advise you to write it and a score of at least 100 and 26 in the speaking section is desirable.
3. Get glowing Letters of recommendations from your former research supervisor and Professors.
4. Write a statement of purpose (SOP) addressing why you want to obtain a PhD and tailored to each school you are applying to.
5. Search for schools offering your course and that fit your profile. You don't want to be too ambitious, at the same time you shouldn't settle for mediocre schools.
6. Contact Professors in your area of research and mail them about your interest in joining their lab.
7. When all is said and done, you want to apply to at least 4 schools to spread your risk and improve your chances.

An exposition can be made about each of the different points above. This is just an overview. There is a need for you to research and learn how to accomplish each of these tasks. Therefore, make "Google" your friend. The resources are out there but you need to put the work in, find them and utilize them.

Doctorate degree is like an employment. So they have to see that you have what it takes to be invested on before they admit you. Combine with all what Time2Smile says, you would be interviewed by the adcom. Again, this is like an employment so you would automatically be working for your department. Lastly, it's called funding/fellowship/grant not scholarship.

Thanks for this. I've heard from gurus here and things like this are very helpful as no one is an island of knowledge. I am an analytical chemist and what I do is separation science and environmental fingerprinting; basically using chromatography and mass spectrometry to detect environmental pollutants. My interest is not limited to this because I can also work as a QC chemist in pharmaceutical industries but I fancy my chances as a lab analyst in a food, drug amd envirinmental analysis laboratory.
On applying early, how early should one apply? I've heard different opinions about this.
Also, the main challenge as we all know is visa sponsorship. How can one navigate this puting into consideration OPT work authorization? Thanks.

Sorry for the late response. I had to be away from home unexpectedly. With respect to how soon you can apply, it depends on when the job is posted and how soon the employer is looking for applications. What I did then was set up alerts on the job search engines I used so that if certain jobs or company ads were posted, I got an alert emailed to me asap. I would say you should apply as soon as you see the ad or no more than a week after. If it's a big company, waiting more than a week or two means you application gets shoved under the pile and if they find one or two good candidates early, more often than not, the recruiter simply ignores other applications.

With respect to your degree, you have a wide range of places to apply to - pharmaceutical, contract analytical chemistry labs, chemical companies, oil companies etc. so do not limit yourself. Apply to as many openings as you think you are qualified for (I applied to over 10, just to be sure and I covered the range - academia, oil companies, chemical companies and pharmaceuticals).

With respect to your immigration status, once you are about to graduate, your International Student Office will assist you transitioning to the OPT phase (I think you still get the 17 months, but that might change in 2018 as Trump is trying hard to reverse this - but at least, you will have 12 months). The office helps you apply and you get the OPT work authorization in form of a card within 3 months. It is important that you apply BEFORE you graduate. Once you get the card, you can use this to start working. Most big employers are familiar with the OPT. However, my advice is that you should ask your employer to immediately file for an H1B position for you as soon as you start work. That gives you at least 2 shots at the H1B lottery system.

Please @Twoods and @Lagosismyhome agree to mentor me. I wasn't given admission last year let alone apply for Visa....
studied Sociology, Cgpa is 3.89, GRE 288, ielts 7.0 , intending course Criminology.......what can i do with those? do i retake GRE? if yes i will need to be taught (who will teach me) because i can't afford to have a low score again.

Criminology is a generic course that anyone can take. Secondly, your GRE scores aren't really stellar so why would a school bother with the added stress of getting an international student when there are many home students willing to take your place? When applying to competitive programs, you need to stand out.
