Yup. There's no doubt in my mind that he would've been world class. Better than Modric and today would be playing for either Real Madrid or FC Barcelona.

But Jose Mourinho took one of the most talented and most skillful players to ever play the game and turned him into a robotic "destroyer" angry

Mikel is a baller. That guy would've been the modern day Zinadine Zidane if he had played to his potential. He has everything it takes to be a world class playmaker. Whomever convinced him to chose Jose Mourinho's Chelsea ahead of Sir Alex Man Utd needs to jailed.

y'all are saying this based on hindsight. What is the guarantee that he would have developed properly as an attacking midfielder under Ferguson? Over the years how many world class attacking midfielders did Ferguson produce? I can only remember Scholes. I can also remember him preferring Cleverly to a lot of other better midfielders, what is the guarantee that Mikel would not be overlooked in favour of cleverly? If you ask me I am totally content with the player Mikel is right now, hypothetical he could have developed into a better player and he could have ended up a lot worse as well so we need to accept what we have

Wenger was right. we have coaches and then tacticians that guise as coaches. The tacticians get the accolades, trophies you need. The coach groom younger ones to maturity and sell to the tacticians.

Together we analyzed football in 2017.

We argued, quarreled, threw jabs and celebrated together.

We have learnt from each other in diverse ways.

The tonic of this thread spans from the diverse opinions and Ideologies of members of this thread.

We are all winners.

As a Team we hope to continue to contribute our quota to the development of Nigerian football this year 2018.

Well done all.

Well spoken true words

This is at the heart of the matter, I am amazed at the degree of abandonment that local football suffers in Nigeria.

There are probably more Chelsea fans than Enyimba fans and or Enugu Rangers. The amount of support that our teams recieve is simply unacceptable.

We can not expect miracles in our football development. You get what you put in at the moment people look at local football as a stepping stone too getting too Europe, that's all.

I go into a bar in Nigeria and everyone is watching the EPL. There is almost zero paying subscription for local football in Nigeria.

Until that Changes its going to be difficult to see major improvements. As a result getting into the National team set up is pivotal to going abroad. This will impact on selection negatively as other considerations will be given greater influence.

Swedish giants Degefors sign Nigerian U17 duo

Joel Signing For Degefors

by Phumzile Ngcatshe

Thursday Jan 04, 2018. 15:30

Nigerian U17 duo Joel Daniel and Ladan Muhammed have signed for Degefors IF in Sweden.

The Swedish second tier outfit has concluded the signing of two Nigerian prospects according to media reports in Nigeria.

OwngoalNigeria reports that the duo was first spotted by the club scouts when they turned out for Jos-based Gee-Lec Academy in a tournament that had scouts from European teams in attendance.

Both Daniel and Muhammed were part of the 2017 U17 team of Nigeria and have signed three year deals, according to their agent Babawo Mohammed.

”Joel and Ladan are part of the reasons why I travelled to Sweden at the end of last year, and it has paid off now for them. Sweden is a nice place for young players to develop,” he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

”Degefors are an ambitious side despite their status as a second division team, the addition of Ladan and Joel will no doubt help their quest to qualify to play in the first division in the future.”

My brother, you wouldn't blame those guys at the viewing centers watching the European leagues o.

We have failed to develop our own.

It takes a lot of patience and humility to even watch the NPFL in your living room not to talk of taking the pains to drive or transport your self to the match venues where your safety is not even guaranteed.

Even me as a person that still manages to once in a while have the appetite to watch the NPFL, I only watch selected matches involving the big clubs like Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Rangers. As I said it takes a lot of patience and humility to even do this in your own house. grin
What I mean is while some people are watching Chelsea vs ManCity elsewhere you are watching Rivers united vs Kano Pillars grin grin grin

Omo, you need an egg to make an omelet. How many naturally talented players (of Mikel's caliber) did Ferguson during that period? You know, we actually came to realize how poor that Man Utd team was after the departure of Sir Alex. Since his departure, 3 world class coaches have been trying to rebuild the same team ... a team that won the EPL in Ferguson's final year, mind you!

Of course, in football like in life there are no guarantees but the truth is that Mikel stood a better chance of developing under Sir Alex than under Mourinho. You know as well as I do that Jose Mourinho doesn't have the time to develop anybody ... he believes in instant gratification - aka the win today mantra. I cried blue murder when Mikel decided to chose Chelsea and I still think that it was a mistake to this day.

A valid question for our candid considerations Sir. I think this is another area we need to deliberate on seriously and make recommendations to the appropriate quarters.

What can we do to improve on poor spectators in our stands during matches?

Salah: I want to be the best Egyptian player in history

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah celebrates scoring

by Phumzile Ngcatshe

Mohamed Salah has set his sights on becoming the best Egyptian player in history.

The Liverpool winger, who was on Wednesday evening named the 2017 CAF African Player of the Year, has enjoyed an outstanding first season at Anfield.

The 25-year-old has netted an impressive 23 goals in 29 games since joining the Reds from Italian Serie A outfit AS Roma in July.

Having helped the Pharaohs to a second place finish at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, Salah scored the decisive goal as the North African's sealed their return to a FIFA World Cup Tournament for the first time since 1990.

Following an eye-catching year for both club and country, the former Chelsea attacker now hopes to one day go down as Egypt's best ever.

"I have always wanted to be here [one of Africa’s best players]," said Salah. "I put myself under pressure and take risks. Right now I have the ambition to be the best Egyptian player in history."

CAF responds on why they scrapped some awards categories

The Confederation of African Football boss Ahmad Ahmad

by Phumzile Ngcatshe

The Confederation of African Football’s president Ahmad Ahmad has defended the body's decision to remove the Africa-based Player of the Year category from its 2017 Awards.

The continental football governing body also removed the Referee of the Year accolade last month after 10 footballers and six referees had originally been shortlisted for the accolades.

"It's very simple, we want to promote African football," said Ahmad.

"There's no two levels of football in Africa. Best is best, not best for the bad or best for the best. That's the reason.

"Best player in Africa is the young player. If you want to go up, don't stay down. Don't sit down.”

The CAF boss added that referees already have their own awards as he responded why that gong has also been scrapped.

"The referees already have their own awards by being recognised for high profile games,” adds Ahmad.

"Based on the locations of the referee, they're rewarded with - say for example - the champions league quarterfinals and subsequent games.

"Another argument is that it is unethical. The committee believes that by giving referees awards, it may lead to some corruption at a latter stage."
