Good morning, house please I need your help urgently. I want to have my wedding next month, I prefer to have a church wedding. We prefer to get our certificate from a federal registry (Ikoyi registry). I heard we are to give them 21 days notification, go in for oath taking before we can be given a certificate to take to a licensed church.

The main issue now is this, my parents are in osun state and the church is in osun, it is an Anglican church. If I do the processes up to oath taking in ikoyi registry, can we take the document from ikoyi registry to get married in a licensed church in osun. We are particular about ikoyi registry incase of travelling out of the country. Please help me out, I am very confused.

Go ahead with the registration in ikoyi court. Not all your relatives are expected in a court wedding/registry .just witnesses is what is needed.

Best wishes

You don’t need to do your wedding at Ikoyi.

I got married in Ibadan at Oluyole local government and my wife is now a US citizen.

Don’t stress your family and friends needlessly.

You don't have to go to Ikoyi. You can go to a registry in Osun state that is close to you.

U.S embassy for instance does not specifically require couples to go to Ikoyi or to go to any specific place for that matter.

The only thing i can tell you is, which ever local government you are going to, make sure they register your marriage officially and there's a document trail.

The only thing I could think of is why people go to Ikoyi if they are travelling out of the country is just incase the embassy want to verify if the certificate is real or not. Since most embassies are in V.I. it is easier for them to travel to Ikoyi than to travel somewhere in North East, or some Village in East or West to verify.

Not that they will not visit those places if they have a reason to believe that the certificate might not be real. Just that Ikoyi is not too far for them and the faster they can verify what they need to verify, the faster your case is proceessed (remember this is if they doubt the authenticity of the certificate).

Cheers!

Thanks for responding. I have read several articles that point to the fact that embassies are rejecting local government registry issued marriage certificates. Hence our reason for wanting to use a federal registry. Now I want to know if after the oath we can take the certificate or form given to get married in osun.

Thanks a lot for your response. The new issue with local government registry issued marriage certificates start last year. So I think the whole rejecting by embassies started last year. Do I need all my family members for the oath taking? Actually all I need from the registry is the form/license they will give us to go ahead and get married in church.

I highly doubt that embassies are rejecting a duly issued certificate from any local government in Nigeria.

That's sound almost laughable, When you get married according to Nigerian laws and you reside in Nigeria. You and your spouse obtains a certificate from the government office in Nigeria. No entity have a right or left to reject the said certificate. On what ground though?

I don't know the country you are "eyeing" or intend to travel to but for U.S, i know for a fact they don't tell you which registry to get married at and I have never heard the rejected a certificate from any registry unless it is fake. As long as you are in a bonafide relationship, you are married.. Nothing to worry about. Just go to any registry that's convenient for you and the people around you and do your thing.

If you have any more concern.. Ask the embassy of the country you intend to travel to.

I believe U.S even put a disclaimer on their website that they do not insist on only marriage certificate from Ikoyi.

You could also contact them via; LagosIV@state.gov.

Cheers!!

I don't think a document/license from ikoyi registry can be taken to a licensed church in osun (I may be wrong though) It's the nearest LG where your church is in osun that will most likely issue the document. Besides what about the certificate? Does the church in osun have the particular certificate issued by ikoyi?

If you are really particular about ikoyi, I advise u do ur vows at ikoyi here, collect your certificate and then go for another solemnization ceremony in church at osun and collect just church cert( double ceremony in reality)

But the issue is Anglican is a licensed church and they will most likely give you the government marriage certificate (most likely from the lga that branch is located). Except you tell them you only need their church cert.

Ask around in that Anglican church they will tell you.

God, help me to simplify my response.

OK, here we go.

- Ikoyi registry requires 21 days notice and payment.
- if your church is licenced, at the end of the 21 days, Ikoyi will give you a licence to take to your church. The licence looks like a marriage certificate but smaller. It is not yours, but it is what the church will see before they go ahead with your wedding.
- Your licenced church will give you a Federal government wedding certificate (white in colour and black prints, no green) same as what Ikoyi would give you.
- the only difference between Ikoyi's certificate and your church's is nothing. Only place of joining and person who joins will be different. Place=the licenced Church. Person=Pastor/Minister instead of Registrar.
- Your licenced Church is only joining you on behalf of the Ikoyi registry. That is why they need that small license from Ikoyi to know that you have done the right thing by filing a notice in Ikoyi. In Ikoyi, a file is opened for you.
- The certificates the church is holding on behalf of the registry has 3 copies for every wedding. One is for you, the 2nd one stays in the church (with that small licence attached) and the third one is returned to Ikoyi either by the church or by you.
- Ikoyi also has a copy of the small licence they initially give you to give to the church, so, when the wedding is eventually contracted, the 3rd copy of your wedding which would be returned to them is attached to it.
- Please note that your church may decide to give you their own Church wedding certificate in addition. But it is only a church/religious certificate. But the one they give you on behalf of the government is the one legally binding you.

Ask me any question for clarification.

Modified:
Please note that if you fully contract your wedding at Ikoyi, you have fully legally married. You do not need to go to church again. But if you want to go to church, the church will not give you government's certificate the 2nd time. They may re-present your Ikoyi certificate and pretend to issue you certificate. Or they may give you their own certificate, which looks like baptismal certificate or school certificate. They may either call your wedding Blessing of Holy Matrimony or the real matrimony ceremony, but the deed had been done at Ikoyi.
- Please you must be sure your church is licensed. So many are ignorant and are not licensed. Once the church secretary or administrator or pastor cannot tell you what I have told you above, do not marry there. Go to court and marry fully.

When you arrive Nigeria, do not tell them you are from abroad. The fee for abroad based is higher. Just file 21 days notice and put Nigerian addresses. If you can't wait for 21 days, plead with them and at an additional fee, they can shorten the 21 days. Do not mention abroad at all o, unless money is not a problem.

Whatever you want to do there, start work wíth them from early morning

Ikoyi is a Federal Government Registry run by the Federal Ministry of Interior Affairs. There is only one other Federal registries that I know of: Abuja. Some say there is one in Port Harcourt.

A federal registry's licence can be taken to any licensed church in Nigeria, no matter what state.

One important thing is that Federal registry obtains its power to contract weddings from an enacted act of tee FGN. Whereas, the LG registries are backed by state laws, traditional/customary laws and lesser laws. They are usually not properly coordinated or referenced or archived and full of frauds. That is why embassies have faith on the Federal registries.

Dissolving a federal registry's contracted wedding will reguire a final verdict from the High Court, but a LG wedding only requires customary court, magistrate court or sharia court.

My advice:
From all your comments, I advise you marry in Ikoyi on a Thursday. That's all. Only take 2 witnesses with you. One from him and one from you. No party. Then go and marry in any church (licensed or not) on Friday or Saturday. Carry the church along and make sure they agree. If it is a stubborn church/pastor, tell them you are coming to do Blessing of your wedding.

Option B
Marry in Ikoyi with family and friends present and stop there. Reception can hold at the registry compound at a fee or somewhere outside.

Option C
Marry in Ikoyi with only witnesses present on day A and do reception on day B in Osun with family and friends present.

Option D
Do a LG wedding, but ensure the certificate are properly filled with no shading and duly signed. And also collect a church wedding certificate On the same date. Anytime you are asked for your wedding certificate, present the 2.

Okay never knew one could take from ikoyi to any licensed church anywhere in nigeria.

By the way Ikoyi is now issuing a cream thick certificate while most of these churches still have the old long white paper.

Either way I think it's best she does the registry marriage at ikoyi to save stress and unnecessary wahala.

Cc: mopriselezz

It's a local government certificate. Federal certificate is similar but black prints, no green.
All local government certificates in the whole of Nigeria use this Exact certificate, no single LG can decide to change it. It is called Local Government Unified Marriage Certificate.

Local Government certificates are prone to be used by fraudsters easily. Roadside printers can even print it. Documentation is not done at the local government and their offices are often and easily razed by fire.

One of the criteria for a church to be licenced is the availability of fire-proof records storage.

We’re you at the wedding? At a Nigerian recognized local government? Did you see a marriage certificate issued? Was it the one that you signed? Was it the one witnessed by hopefully Popsie and Mumsie?

What you wrote is why I stopped responding to the thread.

Why would USA demand wedding at a specific location? It’s unAmerican totally.

They demand health exam at specific locations because they have vetted those and healthcare is not a National issue but a private one.
