Exact question I thought of when I heard the news. I also think the country of destination will claim the child on arrival, since that is the first country the child is entering.

Someone with facts should please answer.

It will be bad new for the mother though if the plane mistakenly land in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The birth place will be written as "Born on air". There is this french footballer, Rio Antonio Zoba Mavuba who is currently playing for Sparta Prague, he was born on board a boat in international waters and this made him not to have a nationality until he received a french nationality 2004. I think the same thing will be applicable to this child.
