How Are Death Benefits Paid In Nigeria? by Amandabannes(f): 6:03pm On Jan 29, 2018
Hello Nairalanders,

Please I would like to confirm from resourceful persons on how death benefits are paid, most especially in the area of the savings in the retirement savings account and the gratuity to be paid by the government via the account.

My dad passed on some six years ago, and up till now we have not been able to access the death benefits with premium pensions despite various documentation processes.

I happen to be the NOK and the family are thinking I have probably been paid the fund.

In all truthfulness, there are financial needs in the family especially young children in school and the Pension Administrator said as at December 2017 that they were waiting for the Pension Commission to send the Bond to them which takes up to a year to arrive angry lipsrsealed.

My question is this, does the pension act give room for the retirement savings in the account to be paid pending when the bond will arrive at Premium Pensions.

Meaningful inputs/help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Put all documents together including the letter of administration and take all to the pension fund manager. Follow up with them closely and you should get paid max 6 months. They might want to pull some stunts though.

The typical problems with blacks, you suffer even for your rights and entitlements. And then after untimely dead takes over...

Most pple don't knw they are their parents nok. I work wit a firm that deals with retire benefits and death benefits. It shdnt take more than 3 months for you to getbur money paid to you. One of our client died on 4th if DEC, may his blessed soul rest in peace. His family got paid their fathers benefits today. It took less than 2 months. If you have already processed your Letters of Administration from the Probate Registry then follow up the Pension Board. Don't give them breathing space

Get a letter of administration from court, Sure you will need like the death certificate and documents to prove you are the NOK to get that. Then I guess the court can actually explain the other processes to you from there. Hope this works n sorry for ur loss.

If he worked with the federal govt u have to be patient until the accrued right is paid but u have to be ready with the letter of administration then the names on the letter of admin will be paid either jointly or one of them will give consent to the other

There must be a pension office/Unit where your dad worked. Go there, you will be given instructions. I don't think still have to wait for the death benefits to be paid, before you can access his contributions though, find out from the PFA, at this stage both the PFA and the insurance company that covers the year your father died will come up with as much huddles as possible so you have to stay strong and be patient

Please continue to follow up with PFA premium in this case. Don't listen to any other advice. I can assure you right process is being follow. The only problem is the current delay but you will be paid.
