The 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup will be the 22nd edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup , the biennial international men's youth football championship contested by the under-20 national teams of the member associations of FIFA , since its inception in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Championship.


The bidding process to host the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup was launched by FIFA in June 2017.

As we know, a host is yet to be picked but that will be decided upon by the FIFA Council on March 8.

The countries (member FIFA associations) in the running are India, Poland and Mexico.

Of all three, India publicly declared they have formally submitted a bid to host the tournament by the November 2017 deadlines.

FIFA are expected to announce the successful host early in 2018- March 8 to be precise.

Honestly, I am ambivalent about this. First, I believe that we've hosted the U-20 World Cup before. So why don't we go for the real thing: bid to host the main FIFA World Cup? It's either go big or go home, right? If South Africa can do it, I don't see why Nigeria can't.

I didn't expect anything less.

Just a little notation to the 1995 WYC. Nigeria actually qualified but were pulled out by Gen Sani Abacha as a mark of protest for taking away the hosting rights from Nigeria to Qatar.

Ideally, we should invite the best irrespective of location but in administration, we have to balance the books.

Take the u17 for instance, say we invite 10 foreign based out of 23, 5 from England and 5 from Germany.

According to my checks online, a flight from England to Nigeria costs between £396-£523, from Germany to Nigeria costs between $511-$836.

To fly 5players from England, the NFF will be prepared to part ways with upwards of £2000.
Similarly, to fly 5players from Germany, the NFF will pay $3000. That is averagely N4million in total to and fro expenses to bring those 10 players to Nigeria.

In a typical AYC qualifiers, we'll play 6matches, meaning we'll spend N24million. Consider this also, the lads are U17 and so are expected to come with a parent or guardian, this doubles the expenses to N48million.

The total prize money for the AYC is $150,000 which is roughly equal to N54million.

That is to say, flight costs for 10 foreign based players alone for the period of qualifiers will gulp a staggering 89% of the AYC prize money. Take a minute and think on those figures.

If it is based on price money then there will not be NPFL or Nigerian FA cup. I am sure you know a tournament's price money is not the only means of making money from the tournament.

The NFF have not complained they cannot foot the bills have they? What happened to the recently signed sponsorship deals?

Manu Garba has hinted that his U17 team is open to all Nigerians irrespective of place of birth.

All 23players will still be logded in hotels for the period of camping, they are still going to be fed, they will still be flied to other countries for away games. If you put all these into consideration, we'll be spending nothing less than N100million for U17 qualifiers alone.

You speak of partnership deals. Okay let's consider the newest deal with Nigeria breweries worth about N2.2billion for five years. This means that, for the period of 5years, the male U17, U20, U23 and senior teams as well as the female U17, U20, U23 and senior teams are to share this money.

If only U17 is gulping over N100million, know that U20 is going to gulp 2x of that and U23 will gulp 3x that amount. The senior team should be taking 5x that amount and that's just for the male teams. If you factor in the female teams then you'll find out that N2.2billion that is supposed to last us 5years will be exhausted in a year. How many of such deals do we have?

This is not even factoring in coaches salaries, and salaries of all back room staffs.

I don't think Chukwueze was based in Europe when he played the qualifiers, I also do not think we've used as many foreign based as we're clamouring.

Nobody is saying we should just flood the team with foreign based players. As many foreign based players as we can get that are good enough to make the team let us get them.
And leave the financial side for the NFF to handle.

How did the NFF cope when players like Victor Osimhen, Kingsley Michael, Kelechi Nwakali, and Chukwudi Agor, who were already foreign based, played the AYC qualifiers?

I recall also that Iheanacho and Yahaya, even though foreign based, were part of their AYC qualifiers.

It is not a new thing for a few foreign based players to take part in the qualifiers. The NFF has been handling that in the past.

Yes, the camping should commence with the home based players. Foreign based (mostly youth team players) can be later invited to boost the team.

But to say we should limit the qualifiers to be executed purely by home-based players, Mba.

Norwegian side Rosenborg will later in the day confirm the signing of Nigerian teen prospect Igho Ogbu, Owngoalnigeria.com can exclusively reveal.
Ogbu has been training with the team for some time now, and after reaching the official professional age of 18 in February. His signing will be made official later today.

The defensive midfielder who can also play as a central defender has impressed the technical crew of the team during training sessions with the first team, and he is expected to sign a five year deal.
His signing means the Norwegian giants now have two Nigerians on their book following the signing of Samuel Adegbenro midway through the season last week from fellow Norwegian side Viking .

Standing at an impressive height of almost six feet tall, he represented Gombe United last season but left the club midway into their campaign in the Nigeria Professional Football League, where they were eventually relegated.

A member of the 2016 Nigeria U17 team, he was one of the three captains of the team that failed to qualify for the African Nations Championship. However from that same team he is the 8th player who have moved to an European team from the players assembled by Nigeria U17 coach Manu Garba.

The 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup will be the 22nd edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup , the biennial international men's youth football championship contested by the under-20 national teams of the member associations of FIFA , since its inception in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Championship.


The bidding process to host the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup was launched by FIFA in June 2017.

As we know, a host is yet to be picked but that will be decided upon by the FIFA Council on March 8.

The countries (member FIFA associations) in the running are India, Poland and Mexico.

Of all three, India publicly declared they have formally submitted a bid to host the tournament by the November 2017 deadlines.

FIFA are expected to announce the successful host early in 2018- March 8 to be precise.
