I have been encouraging undergraduates in my engagements especially on campuses not to consider second class lower (2:2) any longer as a grade to graduate with. The Nigeria labour market is competitive more than ever before and to think you will get your dream job with second class lower grade may be impossible.

The least you should graduate with is second class upper (2:1). Many of the big firms and multinationals rarely give any candidate with 2:2 grade opportunity to write their tests not to talk of getting to the interview room to show what you are made of. You need to give your academic all your efforts while on campus to make sure you don’t go below 2:1 even if it means graduating with 3.50 CGPA on dot.

I know a lot of smart people who are still at home looking for a job just because they graduated with 2:2. Some of them wrote professional exams thinking it will quickly increase their chances of getting a good job but still they are missing a lot of opportunities for not doing enough to get into the 2:1 circle.

What an employer of labour will first request for in Nigeria is not the number of qualifications you have but what you graduated with from the university especially if you are trying to get in through the graduate trainee recruitment.

In recent time, employers of labour in attempt to save energy from having to remove 2:2 CVs from their job entries always make sure they include minimum of 2:1 in their requirements and some already set up their system in a way that it automatically remove the CV of any graduate with 2:2. The only job that banks are magnanimous enough to allow 2:2 to apply for is cashier job.

If you are still on campus, you need to be more serious with your study and if you are a graduate with 2:2, here are my advice for you:

1. Put in for a skill acquisition program with a vision to build a business around the skill later.
2. Start a business with little capital and be resolute.
3. Get into the tech space to see if you can come up with a disruptive idea.
4. Go for masters abroad if your parents can afford it or look for scholarship opportunity.
5. Pick up any job opportunity that relates with what you studied even if the pay is poor and make sure you learn as much as you can on the job.
6. Develop relationship with people in your dream companies as that may help you get in through their experience hire recruitment (This is key).
7. Start your professional exams
The worst thing that can happen to you is to sit at home wasting your life because you are yet to get a job. If the paid jobs are not forthcoming. Look for a pro bono service and be committed to it. Volunteer for programs and make sure you network with people.
No matter what, don’t give up on yourself and never believe that you can’t succeed because you finished with 2:2. We have a lot of people who finished with 2:2 and are successful. Your life is up to you, don’t loan it to your certificate.

you are right in a way, especially those that have no connections. h/ever graduating with a 2:2 doesn't mean the person did not work hard. Some students worked hard to get a grade of 2:2, we all have our limits and limitations.

Actually the first person to get a Job from my class after we graduated from school was the only third class graduate amongst us. The second guy who barely got a 2.2 now works in his father's company. Many of the 2.1s are still at home. I'm not trying to encourage mediocrity but the Nigerian labour market is more complex that y'all think.

Exactly! sad I even know about three Ph.D holders, without jobs. Some of those who are already employed, are even under-employed meaning they are doing jobs meant for people with lower qualifications, and far lesser levels of experience!

Forget Masters?' When most of those that are still job hunting are already Masters' degree holders? I thought you would ask them to get a professional qualification in addition to their existing qualifications.... but not ask them to forget Masters!

My friend graduated with second class lower division (2.2) and he got employed at a multinational oil&gas firm, he did professional courses worth 850k in Lagos last year before he could secured the job last year without any connection, so brother try network yourself in all ramifications and never see yourself as a second fiddle.

Nice one.

If you are still in school and can make 2-1 , just go for it.

If u can no longer make 2-1 or already graduated with 2-2. Start making excuses like the poster above me.

Same same story. 2:1 doesn't guarantee any job. It was a great leverage over a decade ago but not any longer. There are thousands of Nigerians with 2:1 roaming about the streets or who are forcing themselves to do masters.

What having 2:1 does is that you will be able to get more invitations for tests than those with lower. The tricky part is that you will always meet thousands of people with similar grades or with first class at those test centres and hear me right: you are all competing for maybe 100 slots or less. Some of you will get to 4th stage and won't get the job because of the competition. The funny part is that those who graduated with 2:2 many times would have moved on to better things while those with better grades would be expecting feedbacks from the Shells, Schlumbegers, KPMGs, Nestles of this world and if they are not careful, before blinking, 2 years of their lives would have gone.

By all means study hard and make good grades but that is just the beginning. Some of you are destined to travel out to study, some to work in banks, some with government, some others in oil companies and other multinationals.

Yes Most Blue chip companies and Graduate trainee stuffs cut off those with 2:2 Etc......and some opportunities like scholarships and the rest requires 2:1 things, but that's where it ends

In my working life and in some areas like TECH Space, what counts is "What you know" and "What you can do" and not 2:1 AND THE REST.

As the OP's advised everyone, not just those with 2:2 needs a side hustle a business, something that brings in something else and add that extra to your income.

Do your home work well....

Be determined to pull it through

Get a functioning online presence for it and you're good to go

I should study hard for peanuts? Your joking. Some of these small companies pays less, but you can make over 100 timea your salary in commissions etc and opportunities abound. Grades only limits you to work for another man all the rest of your active years
