SEE OUR SPC NO NOISE AND CHEST BEATING... An Interview With Dr Maina: A Nigerian Scientist Who Developed An Algorithm For Finding Missing People

Last year, news was all over the UK about a new algorithm which could help in finding missing people, developed by scientists at the University of Bradford in England. The development was reported by the CNN, BBC, Telegraph, among others. We caught up with the scientist, Dr Ali Bukar Maina, a Nigerian, whose PhD work under Professor Hassan Ugail, led to the exciting innovation. Ali was kind enough to share the following information with us.

Tell us about yourself and schools attended

My name is Ali Bukar Maina, from Nguru, Yobe State. I attended Girgiri Primary School Nguru, then Suleja Academy, Niger State (now Federal Government Academy, Suleja) between 1992 and 1998, then did my bachelor's in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria. Thereafter, I did a Diploma in Computing at Jigawa State Institute of Information Technology, an MSc in Software Engineering at the University Aberdeen, Scotland before joining the University of Bradford for a PhD.

What is your area of research?

Computer vision and machine learning

Last year, your story was on CNN and BBC on a facial age progression algorithm you developed, can you tell us about it?

The algorithm was part of my PhD which entails teaching the computer to generate facial images of people at different ages. In simple terms, you feed in a picture, let’s say of a 30-year-old person, then the algorithm process it and generates an image of the person at any finite age(e.g. age 50). Alternatively, the algorithm can synthesise that image to a younger age (for instance back to how the person looked at age 20. This has several real-world applications such as the search for missing people. Indeed, the news on BBC and other news media reported our findings with regards to the image processing of Ben Needham, a British toddler who went missing over 20 years ago, till date he has not been found. Our algorithm generated some images of how he may look after all the years he was missing, which would thus make the search efforts easier.

Is this algorithm open source?

No, the algorithm is not open source. We hope to get a patent for it shortly.

Has this work been published in a scientific journal?

Yes, it has been published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

Ali M. Bukar, Hassan Ugail. Facial Age Synthesis Using Sparse Partial Least Squares (The Case of Ben Needham). Journal of Forensic Sciences, 2017; DOI: 10.1111/1556-4029.13523

Other improvements to the initial work have further being published as book chapters and conference articles.

What do you think are the other applications of this algorithm?

In addition to finding missing people, the algorithm can be used in the search for fugitives. For instance, in the next 10 or more years, most of the wanted criminals that couldn’t be caught will have changed in appearance. The algorithm could track their age progression and generate pictures that could identify them, which could lead to identification and arrests.

Can this type of research be done in Nigeria?

Computer vision and machine learning can be done in Nigeria. What is required is dedication, in-depth understanding of mathematics and programming. Furthermore, to teach (train) the algorithm, one needs a large database of labelled pictures and a powerful computer that would be able to do the training. These are things attainable in Nigeria.

How do you feel developing such a useful tool?

It gave me a sense of accomplishment seeing how mathematical equations that many people could not understand generated images of a person that people could be recognised.

Can you remember how you developed an interest in science?

I developed an interest in science when I was little, thanks to my dad, who has always been my motivator and mentor. He had a book called “Simple Science Experiments” which we used to study along with my siblings and try the experiments. That gave me a strong passion for science and motivated me to pursue it as a career.

Who is your science hero?

Geoffrey Hinton is a scientist I have high respect for. He is one of the most famous researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence. His work helped kick off the world of deep learning (neural networks). He persisted in what he loved for decades when the whole world thought artificial neural networks made no sense. Today, all the tech giants, like Google, Facebook, Microsoft and their likes are using deep learning to achieve wonders.

What is your advice to young students and junior colleagues?

Hard work, dedication and perseverance are some of the ingredients for success. Rather than studying what will get you a job, pursue the subject you love

This is more like it, show case more of this, rather than that childish and defeatist mention of a rather unknown drug dealer. Obviously, your aim of bringing that up falls completely flat on its face.

Kudos to Dr Mana, I need to read up more about him. Lovely work.

Ibrahim Sheme
Sheme is one of the leading
authors and literary critics in
northern Nigeria. His first
novel, "Kifin Rijiya" (The
Ignoramus), which he wrote
while still a student in Bayero
University and was published
in 1991, won second position
in the Northern Languages
Novel Writing Competition
organised by the Kaduna State
government.
His second novel,
"'Yartsana" (The Doll), won the
first place prize in the maiden
Bashir Karaye Prize for Hausa
Writing. His other works
include "The Malam's Potion"_
(a collection of short stories),
a travelogue on his tour of
Israel and the Palestinian
territories titled "Ilmi Mabudin

Major-General Shehu Musa
Yar'Adua, and a biography of
the late Alhaji Mamman Shata
titled "Shata Ikon Allah!" He
also edited an anthology of
short stories for the
Association of Nigerian
Authors titled "Cramped
Rooms and Open Spaces".
Sheme was a central figure in
the debate over Hausa
romance fiction which raged
in several newspapers and
magazines in northern Nigeria
between 1991 and 1999. The
highly popular discourse,
called "The Great Soyayya
Debate", pitched writers,
academics and literary critics
such as Ibrahim Malumfashi,
Abdalla Uba Adamu, Yusuf M.
Adamu, Ado Ahmad Gidan
Dabino, and others on the
efficacy and need for the
romance novels known as
"soyayya books". Sheme
initiated the debate as acting
editor cum literary editor of
Nasiha, the Hausa weekly
newspaper being published
by Nationhouse Press
(publishers of The Reporter
newspaper) in Kaduna. He
took the debate to other
media houses where he
subsequently worked as
editor or literary editor:
Hotline and Rana magazines,
New Nigerian, Weekly Trust,
and Leadership newspaper.
The debate attracted the
attention of Nigerian and
foreign scholars such as
Professor Graham Furniss of
the School of Oriental and
African Studies (SOAS),
University of London, who
documented it.

Asking northerners to achieve anything positive for Nigeria is like asking a chicken to pee.

Northerners HATE Nigeria so much. They are only part of it for 3 GOALS :
(1.) To cheat, (2.) To steal and (3.) To loot.

Anything else outside of their three goals are the responsibility of Yorubas, Igbos and the rest of the useless tribes northerners had to associate with to make Nigeria.

QuotaSystem:
This OP is clearly obsessed with the North smiley.

Two days ago he asked what plan the North had for Nigeria (assuming it had none), by the time he was provided with a bulletproof roadmap to progress (despite failing to acknowledge the failures that southern leadership recorded in the 14 years it was in power since 1999), he ran away from the thread without acknowledging the roadmap, only to cough up this new one.

To confirm his prejudice, he has now asked northerners not to mention Aliko Dangote who is Nigerias gift to the black race and one of its biggest exports and sources of pride - a Fulani entrepreneur par excellence and richest black man alive, greatest industrialist in Africa that develops countries with solid infrastructure instead of powdered drugs. His insistence on excluding Dangote clearly proves that he is not genuinely curious but just seeks an avenue to bash the north in order to air out his frustration.

Even though we have inventors like Jelani Aliyu (Chevrolet Volt electric car), world leaders like Amina Mohammed (Dep. UN Secretary General), the world renowned colourful Hausa architecture among others, indulging the OP further will only reinforce his bigoted tendency to open another senseless prejudiced thread on his crazed obsession - the great people of northern Nigeria.
give room for some recovery now, why you com give d op a standing tackle

https://www..com/talk/topic,133003.0.html....A 46 years old man, Mr. Kelechi Nnali of Nkpogoro, Ndibe in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was weekend allegedly caught having carnal knowledge with a sheep along the roadside in the community.
It was gathered that Nnali who is married with two wives and children pleaded with the boy who saw him committing the crime not to tell anybody, promising that he would give him (the boy) N10,000 and a handset but the cat was let out of the bag when Mr. Nnali renege on the agreement.

It was learnt that when the act of bestiality committed by Mr. Nwali filtered into the ears of the people of the area, he was summoned by the elders of the community to answer to the allegation as the matter was later taken to Ogo Ezinwachi Play ground where delicate and public matter are usually discussed.

At the venue, Mr. Nnali was sanctioned according to the law of the land. The elders, who were visibly angry with the depraved act, stressed that the man had committed an abomination in the land and must pay the price according to the law of the land.

i guess this your dad in action Why would a man sleep with his own daughter? Ordinarily, it is strange or odd to even imagine that happening. But the fact is that many men are not only sleeping with the children they sired but also putting them in the family way. Now, how would you describe the fruits of such relationships? Are they children or grandchildren or both?
The other day, a 62-year-old man, Matthew Emeaguboro, in Apo, Abuja told the world that he impregnated his 13-year-old daughter. The father from hell, as he was tagged claimed that he was lured into the act by his daughter while he was having his bath. He also blamed his wife for not warming his bed often.
Recently, 49-year-old Tony Ehumadu, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State was caught in bed with his daughter by his wife. In his defence, Ehumadu allegedly said he raped his 15-yr-old daughter under the influence of alcohol. He added that he didn’t meet his daughter as a virgin.
Giving a graphic description of how he had been sleeping with his daughter in their Oko-Oba home in Abule-Egba area of Lagos State, he said: “I did the abominable act with my eldest daughter. But I only raped her twice. I don’t know what came over me. I am convinced that forces beyond me led me into committing the crime.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w4s7LcDUjU An estimated 10,000 drug dealers from Nigeria have entered Thailand to support the local drug industry. These transnational drug dealers mostly disguise themselves as follows:

1) University and college students
2) Exporters of products such as clothing, shoes, dried fish and auto parts.
3) Pastors and church musicians
4) Footballers
5) Rappers and DJs

Although many Nigerian drug dealers deal in heroin and cocaine the most popular drug is methamphetamine or ICE.

Many Nigerian drug dealers are carrying passports of other countries such as Swaziland, Mozambique, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

Hundreds of Thai women were recently arrested and many executed for running drugs for the Imo, Enugu and Anambra states of Nigeria drug syndicate.

This arrest was made shortly after a German drug dealer abusing Thai women confessed that he was stockpiling ICE for a biker gang in Sukhumvit soi 4 with fresh supplies imported by Nigerians.
