He can, but it is not advisable. In that case he won't be dressed in wig and gown. The principle of nemo judex in causa sua (you cannot be a judge in your own case) is not that you can't make your case or defend same. It is just that you have no right to be a judge in your own case. The scenario painted above is being your own counsel, not a judge determining the issues in question. Remember that ordinarily, a person can defend himself in person or through a counsel of his choice in Court. A lawyer still remains a person whose right to defend himself is not prevented just because he was called to the bar. But to ensure professionalism, increase chances of success and avoid an abuse of legal procedure, it is advisable and safer to get a lawyer.

There are many litigation firms that pay well. Maybe you've not applied to any, or maybe they have their requirements which you must meet.

Yes he can
That maxim means no man can be a judge in his or of his or her own case.
So a lawyer acting as his counsel in a civil suit doesn't mean that he is a judge in his own case.

I responded. I sent you the name of the firm and the address. I was even thinking you have filled it as agreed. Maybe it dropped in the spam. I still have a copy of the mail I sent you. You should have raised it before now. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Hi, Lawyers.

I created this group to serve as an avenue for young lawyers to meet, share ideas and learn. Also, it can afford corps members who are lawyers, law students at the university and law school students the opportunity for internship and externship in law firms of members here. It may also help lawyers going through the glitches of unemployment, underemployment and less encouraging careers to talk to colleagues who may inspire them with experience, notify them of vacancies, help them proffer answers to the pressing needs of clients and help with securing jobs (if possible) in their firms.

There is also room for lawyers in the same region, city or town to meet up for professional purposes, friendship, personal reasons or any other lawful dealings of their choice. Non-lawyers may also make use of this opportunity to contact lawyers and discuss their various legal dilemmas either pro-bono or as may be agreed by parties.

Experiences as per demands of legal practice, job search, Court room experience, office situations can also be shared to serve as points of information for other lawyers and aspiring lawyers.

NOTE: This post and subsequent ones do not amount to a promise of job for anyone. It is only an attempt to bring lawyers together, make friends and lend helping hands to fellow lawyers. No one should part with any money or gift on the ground of promise of job. Individuals are also advised against meeting people not well known to them in private places.

Let us start.

I am a legal practitioner.
Year at the Bar: 4 years
Areas of practice: Dispute resolution (Litigation and Arbitration), Oil and Gas law, Election matters, Intellectual Property and Maritime law.
Areas of further interest: Space law, Medical law, Project finance and Taxation
City/Place of practice: Abuja.

By law Copyright arises once the idea is fixed in a permanent form. While you can register your song with Nigerian Copyright Commission, this registration is not proof of ownership and could only be used to maybe prove the age of your creation. For emphasis Copyright in the Song or other creative work arises once it is fixed in a permanent medium

Furthermore copyright in Songs is a bit complex and divided into 3 parts that could be owned by 3 different people depending on circumstances and agreement.

Literary Copyright
This refers to the wordings of the song when it is written.

Copyright in the musical work
This refers to the musical notes i.e. the composition, beat etc

Copyright in the sound recording
This refers to the recorded song. ie what you play via a CD or is played on the airwaves.

You could join a registered collecting society (COSON in Nigeria) to get some benefit from the use of your Song by Radio and TV and other public media. although I am not sure of their integrity.

hope this helps

He can by proxy though not directly. He can't be appointed as a director of board, promote companies , amongst others.
But there is usually a back door, which is not so common in Nigeria but can be used. Bury everything in layers of trust, and have trust take care of you.
