The latest news in town now is president buhari denying his assent to the Peace Corps bill, it was greeted with mixed reaction from the general public.

but One thing I have noticed is that those who accepted that i was in the best interest of the country are more than the opposing side...

Let me sight this few reasons why they aren't in our interest..

1) Nigeria spend over 70% of its budget on recurrent expenditure leaving less than 30% for capital project, if we continue like this do you think if we continue like this we will have the Nigeria of our dreams?? Payment of salaries have always been a burden to the Fg adding another burden to it under the guise of employment is not right it will only be a bulwark to Nigeria's development. Why can't we utilize our meager resources to better things instead of creating another agency with no specific work.

2) Too many para military

Nigeria has more than 3 para military already all bearing arms, and doing there jobs effectively coupled with there problems. Approving the Peace Corps will just be another way for the corrupt Oga's at the top of siphoning our money.

3) overzealous and corruption we all know how our police, Army and other Armed Forces misuse power in the past and even presently, an NGO who is just starting it course is already hood winking gullible Nigerians, collecting money from volunteers.
What will be our faith. In the street you will see a Peace Corps volunteer asking you do you know me?? All those doesn't make sense.. instead of another para-millitary why can't we channel the resources to our police who is over stressed and better equip them with modern wares..
u spoke well jere. i saw this coming. peace corps is a short term solution to unemployment which will create further burden on the FG in the nearest future.

The NASS will fight PMB to the last drop of blood on this one. While we need jobs, is it by creating another security agency that in reality, is a duplication of other agencies already in existence? Is over bloating Nigeria's recurrent expenditure the way out?

Instead of creating another duplicitous agency, I would've expected the NASS to pass legislation to strengthen the existence ones; better funding, modern security equipments/gadgets, retraining to meet modern day security threats, etc but coz the lawmakers have already prepared to fill the Peace Corps with their protégés & put them in good stead for re-election among their constituents, they're blinded to reason.

Anyways, I stand for better job opportunities for Nigerian youths not Buhari or NASS coz at the end of the day, both are doing little or next to nothing to improve our lots.

Does his not assenting to it mean the other existing ones will be strengthened? Our security is nothing to write home about. The other time Nigerians demanded police reform, wht has been the result of that? The police is so unreliable and i think the civil defense are doing a better job than them. We need more security outfits since the police is beyond redemption

Op, when Buhari, during his campaign, promised to create millions of jobs for the unemployed youths, where ware you & him expecting their salaries to come from.

In the private or public sector
GSM brought more jobs without more burden to national budget

Security of a nation is not an avenue for employment generation. It is a selfless service in protection of humanity.

If any those guys who have enlisted in the corps is actually service driven, he or she should find his way either to the police or defence academy.

In Nigeria?
What is our national budget?
What is our GDP?
We cannot afford it!
People want uniform to extort money; they don't care about salary. The bribe (that will come from you and I) is what they are after

like Someone said, there is no money for Peacecorp but there is money to establish cattle colony nationwide. Who is Deceiving who? There is no money but there is money to pay millions of Euros to boko haram as ransom they can also go and do railway projects in Niger Republic . It is Nigerias money let them spend it on Nigerians.

I agree with the op most especially on the third reason. 2weeks a go I went to Benin my home state i didn’t drive cos of the road so a younger cousin picked me up at the airport. On getting to somewhere around the center city we met Road Safety officer. And the officer as for vehicle particulars and drivers license which to me is normal. But my cousin flared up is that how you should stop your fellow officer? I turned and look at him in my mind I was like officer ? Which officer is his my cousin I don’t know off. Then there was a heated argument blw him and the Frsc officer and other officers joined in. My cousin told them espirit de Corps but they wanted to know if he is a police or Civil defense or any other just identity. Could u believe this boy got angry again then I interven o boy identify yourself and moreover if u don’t have those things they requested we talk to them with ease my cousin refused . Then they scan the vehicle and found out the car papers expired, no license with him, no extinguisher too many offenses. Suddenly my cousin said I am Peacecorp officer and you have no right to impound your fellow officer vehicle. Then immediately one Frsc replied , you people are still standing with one leg what if the two leg complete is this how Peacecorp will be misbehaving? Even me self come weak. To cut the long story short, my cousin car ended up in Frsc office. But I feel for them sha.

Oga just chill and think. When someone wants to create jobs, it mustn't be federal jobs na, creating jobs can be done both directly and indirectly. If the govt makes your biz or company grow in one way or the other, you can go ahead to employ more hands which has helped in creating jobs for those guys by the fed govt through you. You get?

Refusing to assent to it was the best decision ever. Sometimes I wonder how some of our leaders think. Why did the National Assembly approve of it in the first place?

Instead strengthen the already existing ones while adding more officers to the ones we already have.
peace corp is a relic of pdp era, and pdp is dead.

So, you are saying we should create 'jobs' just for the sake of it, without clearly outlining what these 'jobs' are meant to be producing? We should create yet another security outfit, instead of improving (or scrapping) existing ones by allocating more funding / personnel to them?
