A Camry of $10,000 is roughly 3.6m+ at CBN exchange rate without shipping or clearing. If you add shipping+clearing+ dealer's profit, you are looking at almost 5m naira. Advertise that on Nairaland here, and watch miscreants call you all manner of names. I've bee there before and I know what's up. That being said,I won't dispute the fact that there are greedy dealers. I know someone who shipped in an accidented Highlander years ago and fixed it to resell. When he wanted to bid for it, I told him not to buy it for resale but to buy it and butcher it for parts. He came here and fixed it and spent a lot of money on it,and could barely even sell it well... I agree that people should disclose the history of cars here.

As regards the issue of rolled back mileage, it is ignorance that is killing Nigerians and at such, they become a victim of their over sabi. Do you know that some cars with high mileage on the odometer, usually have their engines changed at around 180k-220k km? When the engine has been changed, the car doesn't start reading from zero. Sometimes, a car with a landing mileage of 350k, might have had the engine changed at 280k. This means the current engine would be on about 70k. Instead of our people to focus on the performance of the car and how sound the engine is,they'd be shouting mileage is too high. Dealers who are desperate to sell, end up rolling back mileage to suit the customer's ignorance. Some rolled back mileages are even done in the US. Imagine a client looking for 2003 corolla with mileage of 80k max,in 2018. The average drive for a car is about 15k miles/yr in the US but some cars do more than that yearly. Multiply 15k by 15 yrs and that gives you 225k miles. But you'd see ignorant over sabi folks, demanding maximum of 80-100k miles. This is why most dealers resort to tricks.

Nice one bro, next thing now, some people who can't afford to buy a car will come to call u names, just cos u have a slight different view

Re: Shocking Transformation Of Some Crashed Cars Sold In Nigeria (Photos) by oyatz(m): 3:43pm On Mar 05, 2018
You are 100% correct.
We can NOT have good control over the quality of used vehicles (tokunbo) imported into Nigeria, the best way to have control over the quality is to start local MASS production of cars in Nigeria.

Softmojo:
at least 80% - 90% of Tokunbo cars nowadays are actually salvage vehicles that have gone through one repair or another.

Bros...I wasn't the only one who has recommended him on this thread. Look above my comment...someone else who I don't even know recommended him even before I did.

If you have any issues about saintjoel, come out here and let us know, just as Ipfreely & Cosplay are doing to the car dealers.

Also what trouble are you talking about? Am I standing as a guarantor to him or what...that you are talking about putting myself in trouble? Haven't you heard of due diligence despite recommendations

Bro,abeg make una take am easy. Hopefully things would get better with time. People have been duped of hard earned money here in the past(no car/money to show for it). But we thank God we were able to put a stop to it(I suppose). Hopefully, the issue of vin disclosure not being adhered to,would take a while to adjust to. Sometimes, I also forget to include it but I always provide it on request.

There are a number of other POTENTIAL red flags, but perhaps the most blatant, raging-bull matador red flag of them all is the deliberate absence of VIN on a 'tokunbo' vehicle advert.
Close to 100% of these dubious and very dishonest sellers in the autos section would never display a VIN, and most of them, even when reminded, would respond very negatively and aggressively.
Examples.
https://www.nairaland.com/4353427/2010-toyota-corolla-toks-2.7
https://www.nairaland.com/4353188/2011-camry-sale-tokubo
I could literally go on and on with the examples, I encourage you to go through my posts and those of other concerned individuals here e.g. cosplay, obekediamondfuto and the rest.

An example of a potentially dangerous purchase.

https://www.nairaland.com/4353188/2011-camry-sale-tokubo

Note how resistant the seller is to providing the VIN.

Then there's this one. This is a potentially very serious situation.

Ive been called different names, some even said we're trying to stop importation of salvage vehicles.

Na to buy salvage now, fix am.

But some of these dealers import over salvage cars and tag them accident free.

Trust pple to talk off point! Oga you have opened pples eyes and exposed the irregularities,i beat my chest to say those that called you names are part of this problem! Keep up the good work sir. God bless you.

I doubt it! Its like your phone number,if miss a digit i wont get you,so the VIN should be unique to each car.

I just want to lend my voice to this. We've had this discussion in the past and it's good we address it again. I'm going to speak solely from my personal point of view.

When I got into car business, I was initially into strictly clean title cars. Unfortunately, the prices were usually on the high side and I know the no of times I was called a thief on nl here cos of the huge difference in prices. As much as I tried to make a lot of people understand, it fell on deaf ears. Most of those cars stayed on ground for a long while before being sold, and some were sold at below landing cost. Most of my partners got discouraged and refused to ship in vehicles anymore. One thing I can say from experience here,is that the percentage of people who are ready to, and can afford clean title cars on this site, are not even up to 4% of the numerous potential clients we have here.

Most potential buyers always look for cars at ridiculous prices. You see people whose budget can only afford a car of 1.5m,coming to price a car of 3m. As much as 90% of the cars that are shipped in,are bought on auction and on auction, prices are not fixed. The era where dealers were making huge profits on cars, has gone. There are too many cars on in Lagos now and to the best of my knowledge, most dealers I know, sell to break even. If you find that some cars are quite expensive, it could be that the landing cost, are quite high.
I know that there are dealers who import terribly accidented vehicles and I've had cause to quarrel with some of them.
Sometimes, I also post cars with salvage history and that's cos I have a lot of friends and dealers who push their cars to me,to help them sell. I do not have issues providing vin on request. But let us be clear on something. The fact that a car has a mild damage and is classified as salvage, doesn't make it automatically cheap at the auction. At the end of the day,we're not perfect in business but can only strive to attain it.

Thank you sir for your sincere truth.

no one lights a candle n keeps it under a bushel, same also with integrity...... u can't fake it! isn't it obvious hu u would rather do business with?
an arrogant person/ dealer hu aggressive brags about nothing or a calm headed dealer who calmly gives u info despite the repercussions.....

if u have followed this thread religiously, u will notice something; upcoming dealers make the loudest noise despite their inability to make reasonable and tangible comments/ arguments.... the established just watch from the background without any comments and the growing make tangible points.
