I googled this woman and besides her PhD thesis which has been cited once, there seems to be nothing of note she has published. Her UI's bio page is also blank and there is a dearth of information about her, her studies and accomplishments, if any. I searched the SIVB website and her name is just not turning up. So, what's the significance of this award?

Joshua Z. Gasiorowski June, 2016
Stephanie DeWitte-Orr June, 2014
Addy Alt-Holland June, 2013

Criteria for award is here: https://sivb.org/awards/young-scientist-awards-criteria.html

It seems the awards are made in June every year, and from information available on the twitter handle of the organization @SiVBiology, no winner has been announced.

Was Dike more pioneering that Oladele Ajose, a medical doctor and most senior African on the academic board of University College Ibadan?

Was Dike more senior to Oladele Ajose who was the first tenured Nigerian professor in history?

Is it false tale that Dike was called back from sabbatical in the USA to take the position of Vice Principal. While a more qualified Oladele Ajose was right there in Ibadan on the campus?

You cannot erase the facts, and even Dike was apprehensive to accept the position that was being forced on him.

I repeat merit to the Igbos is Igbos first, others follow.

IGBO - I Go Before Others.

You're actually busy here wasting your talent as a writer of fiction. Maybe you should further hone your skills at Chimamanda Adichie's workshops for potential novelists.

And while at it, why don't you go on and spin another fabulous tale about how Zik wangled Eni Njoku in as pioneer Unilag VC.

As for what you gleefully posted as your pejorative of the Igbo, I Go Before Others actually sums up the finest pioneering qualities of the people.

Such useless traffic are limiting the growth of Nairaland which has made many serious minded people to leave Nairaland or just merely reading posts while avoiding registration as members.

There are many creative ways of generating traffic (just like quora and other enlightened forums) with positive effects on Nation building than promoting intertribal e-wars.

Tribalists and racists have this flawed assumption that members of a particular (their own) tribe/race are superior to members of other tribes/races which is not backed by any scientific or rational reasons.
A person may be better than another person on Individual basis but NOT because they belong to one tribe/race.

All TRIBES HAVE INTELLIGENT AND HARD WORKING members as well as lazy, dull and wicked peoples.

Yea, you're right. People of one tribe or race cannot be collectively more intelligent than people of other tribes or races despite the overwhelming difference in intellectual outputs by the different tribes and races. The Germans or the Japanese or the Jews are not superior intellectually, sir. This is the type of argument that tends to come from someone who belongs to a group that lacks obvious evidence of intellectual superiority. And one does not have to display a false sense of political correctness about this brutal fact.

Throwback:

Yes he was made vice principal of the University College Ibadan ahead of the most senior African on the academic board and first ever Nigerian professor, Prof. Oladele Ajose.

Dike's appointment was facilitated by the Igbo dominated NCNC who had also installed Dr Akanu Ibiam who was the first Igbo doctor, as the School Council chairman. While Oladele Ajose was most senior and readily available at the school, Dike was called back from the USA where he was on an unfinished sabbatical, to come take a position (Vice Principal) he wasn't the most qualified for.

When the British eventually withdrew their administration of the school, Akanu Ibiam as School Council Chairman, further ensured that Kenneth Dike who was a fellow Igbo like him, became the first Nigerian principal of University College Ibadan. Professor Oladele Ajose realised that he was forever going to remain a victim of the NCNC and Igbo version of "merit" system that only found the Igbos qualified for positions that their better educated and more experienced Yoruba superiors did not qualify for. Ajose read the Igbo writing on the wall and moved to the Western Region owned University of Ife, to become its first principal.

Prof Kenneth Dike and Akanu Ibiam led school council would eventually go on to conduct recruitment into UI after the departure of the British. Out of 115 new hires, only 3 were Yorubas while the bulk of the remainder were from the Eastern Region.

That is how Igbos practice a merit based system.

The foolish Yorubas who were members of NCNC were never offered any sensitive position in the NPC/NCNC partnership of the first republic. Not even the Eastern minorities were offered critical positions.

All that was good that the Northerners could not occupy, the Azikiwe led NCNC ensured it went to the Eastern region, and ultimately to only the Igbos of that multi-ethnic Eastern Region.

Don't be daft. Eni Njoku was indigenous VC of Unilag, but he was certainly NOT an expert manager of men and resources, like you claimed. So why are you lying? His legacy in Unilag, was nothing to write home about. Go and check.

This is the most stupid and envy-coated post I have read today.

Are you aware that a Yoruba student attacked prof. Biobaku because of his unfair and tribalistic agenda against Prof. Njoku? Google is at your service o.

That being said, read this excerpts:

Pioneer university administrators like Profs. Ade Ajayi and Eni Njoku constitute the genius of university administration whose unique insights saw the possibility of injecting the university and its constituents into the nation-building efforts in Nigeria. It was already clear to these scholars the responsibility of a national university in the founding of a new nation. The postcolonial university, especially in Nigeria, ought to be more than a citadel for crunching graduates without any grounding in the dynamics of history and historiography, education and national destiny.

The glaring truth is that a lot of nepotism went on when Azikiwe was in power that gave Igbos an edge over others, especially Yorubas who were more educated. The VCs of Unilag and UI were undoubted chosen due to the influence of the ruling party then.It is still happening now.I am sure if everything is done on merit,Nigeria will be better than this.We practised regionalism which showed the region that was the most prudent, rich, versatile, progressive, etc.SW came tops.

God bless you Sir for the facts you have provided!!! Those arguing with you don't have facts to back up their claims !!!
Throwback:

Awo is to the Igbos the father of tribalism for contesting to be premier in his own Western region when he had an Igbo challenger from another party, and daring to become premier of his own region.

For daring to compete in his own region, Awolowo is a tribalist. For ensuring nepotism, Igbos are competitors.

I don't need to fear domination as my people are not famous for wailing like babies with claims of marginalization. We simply dictate our own rules in our own region, and surely we sit back to watch with amusement the protestations of only one tribe out of all the migrant tribes in our own midst - the Igbos. You are that predictable and self entitled.

I have pointed out the nepotism that Igbos termed merit in the first republic, when less qualified Igbo's were appointed by fellow Igbos into offices that were above their station, while more qualified Yoruba seniors were overlooked. And as one Igbo got in, he made sure to bring the whole clan in. The same strategy you tried to do in the Western region politics and failed woefully. While the North already knew who they were dealing with and kept you from their regional jobs and offices, while you already dominated the federal space being the educated tribe in the North-East alliance of the first republic federal government.

Despite dominating your multi-ethnic Eastern region and ensuring you dominated the federal government jobs, using the NCNC partnership with NPC, your people till this day continually wail that Amadu Bello did not allow them to have their way in the Northern region.

Till this very post, even you are still in turmoil and agony that Awolowo democratically became the first premier of his own Western region, having formed a government with his own Action Group and independent parliamentarians who together formed a majority government. What manner of greed and baseless envy is the Igbo imbued with?

Your greed is legendary and is exemplified by the recruitment conducted by Igbos in University College Ibadan.

It was also the NPC/NCNC government that appointed Prof. Eni Njoku as Principal of University of Lagos, so no surprises at all. The Igbos must have it all.

Still you wanted the very soul of the Nigerian Federal Government, hence the Igbo coup of January 1966, and the subsequent unitary decree of Aguiyi Ironsi.

Your ways are known to all, and we have put you were you belong.

If only your Igbo sons and daughters could erase the history of the Yorubas they always have to catch-up to.

Ask yourself, what is MERIT?

I gain admission into a university as a result of my hardwork in studying my book and passing well - THAT'S MERIT.

I gain admission into a university as a result of my kinsmen slotting me in despite my inability to pass well or meet the requirements- THAT'S NOT MERIT.

You are a shameless liar if you say that Dike and Njoku were not professionally competent for their VCship appointment.

Your claim that it was zik that fixed them there makes you a bigger liar. It is the senate board of the university that recommends, then the prime minister (balewa) APPOINTS. The ceremonial president (zik) only assents.

If you have issues with tafawa balewa or core north, be bold enough to confront the north and stop being a coward. Balewa appointed dike and njoku, NOT zik. Dike and Njoku met all the necessary requirements for VCship.

Your Ajose not being appointed showed that he wasnt the only professor, in fact he had colleagues who had competitive advantage.

UI - belonged to the federal govt. (A colonial gift to Nigeria).
UNN - Belonged to the Eastern regional government.
UNILAG - Belonged to the FCT (then Lagos)
OAU - Belonged to the Western regional government
ABU - Belonged to the Northern regional govt.

So where was the nepotism here? Was UI a Yoruba property as at then? Was Unilag a Yoruba property then?

You and your "likes" are just arguing blindly. You can't rewrite history.
