INSTALL CCTV CAMERA IN ALL THE FOUR CORNER OF THE STORE AND THE ENTRANCE AND MAKE SURE ITS RECORDING SO THAT YOU CAN PLAY AND WATCH LATER
GET THE AUTOMATED RECEIPT TOO
GET A SECURITY MAN TO MAN THE ENTRANCE OF UR STORE SO DAT E ALSO CAN COLLECT A COPY OF THE RECEIPT AND E MUST REMIT IT TO YOU AND ORDER EM THAT ANY CUSTOMER THAT COME IN TO BUY ANYTHING FROM THE STORE AND DID NOT SUBMIT A COPY OF THE RECEIPT TO HIM SHOULD NOT BE ALLOW TO LEAVE THE STORE.

Worldwide problem.
The hiring process is your most important mitigation point.
Employees handling cash must be bonded and wages should.not overlap time worked. That means workers who quit without notice would miss their last pay.
That last pay Wil be used to cover money/merchandise stolen.
All parties should understand and agree at the point of hire.

How can u possibly leave ur means of livelihood to some strangers? So no family member or grown up kid to manage ur store when u arent in town? Even if u go digital, there are ways to bypass them since theres no surpervision.

Acidosis:

There are honest people but it is not advisable to plant or run your business on integrity/honesty. Reason is simple: you can't measure integrity, but you can measure CSFs (critical success factors) and industry best practices.

The owner of the shop will run at loss if she/he continues to search for someone with "integrity" to manage the shop. Adopt industry best practices (e.g. electronic invoicing, POS, CCTV, etc.), and everything else will fall in place. Run your business in such a way that even if you employed Nigeria's biggest criminal, it would be difficult to steal from you.

hahahhhahah, I know of someone who said he stole infront to the CCTV and it wasn't detected, forget o, except the person nor mean you. I was shocked, till today na so I dey look the bros with one kind eye, except she adds electronic invoicing(which I know they will still find a way to bypass sooner or later )

Dear Nairalanders,

A very good morning to you all. Please I'd like your expert on an issue that is affecting my business. I have a big cosmetic shop which by God's grace fetch me money. But the problem is that my sales boy/girl steal heavily from me.

I have tried to checkmate them but all to no avail. Whenever I'm in the shop, I do checkmate them. But most times, I'm always out of the country doing business. Someone suggested getting a machine which can be used to issue receipt on any sales made but the problem is that I don't know it's functionality. Also, another friend suggested the use of CCTV to me.

Dear Nairalanders, kindly enlighten me on what to do as the issue is affecting my business. Thanks in anticipation.

This is actually a very interesting topic because I’m currently reading a book about psychology and business at the moment that addresses this issue.

According to this book, when it comes to honesty and human psychology, it is easier to prevent people from stealing at the beginning than fix the problem later. He conducted experiments on groups of people and found that when people were asked reminded of their moral obligation by reading the 10 commandments before the temptations, they stole less.

Also, if you prep the psychology so that they know that they have the feeling being watched and you tell them the consequences of stealing before they start, they will perform better.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Sack all the stealing cashiers. They are already corrupt and it is easier to start afresh than to fix a corrupt mind (don’t ask me what this means for our country.)

2. Rehire on a good salary that they can live on

3. Install CCTV cameras or dummy cameras, including ones facing the till. Tell staff that the camera images are backed to the cloud and that images are stored elsewhere and can be accessed by you in teatime on the internet even if you are abroad.

4. Sounds crazy but put a poster of Jesus face or the 10 commandments behind the till or cash register where only the cashiers can see.

5. Accept payments primarily by card and have 2 - 3 backup card machines. Ask your bank for Global Accelerex card machines because their engineers come out to fix them in 24 hours if faulty. There’s post here that covers getting a POS terminal in Nigeria: http://www.mrpepe.com/banking/how-to-get-a-pos-terminal-for-your-business-in-nigeria/

6. Employ someone to reconcile account each day and query staff on the day if any fraud is detected.

Please let us know how you get on!

Thanks. You have already spoken what's on my mind.

And let me add this:

Employed a good accountant with sound audit experience.

. If shop rights and other departmental outlets can curb it,why can't he. Besides taking stock has bn made easy by using electronic devices. He can get more information from other bigger stores.Does he have scanners and other modern equipments or he is just running it like a lay man?

You can only minimize theft, it's almost impossible to eliminate completely.
Get a functional CCTV
As much as possible encourage POS
Monitor stock, make sure every pin is in the system (if you get this right, you would have succeeded to a large extent).
Make sure customers are issued electronic invoices, not the paper type. The person issuing the invoices must be different from the one receiving cash and their accounts must balance at the end of the day.
If possible barcode all your items, some malls install devices that alert them if any one tries to leave with an item that has not been processed.

To compliment this also get also employ a Manager/Supervisor. Then get an Auditor/Accountant who will be working on part time basis, say weekends.

It will help to a large extent.

Your best solution to your problem are as follows

1.Deploy an inventory management system in your shop and Lear how to use it

2.Get an accounting graduate to manage your sales and stock on daily basis and if possible give you a weekly update report ( Ensure he is well compensated and must be of proven character
3.Digitalize your operations

Sir can you bypass back I tell them you have more money than you really have?

No!
It's possible to trick a camera, because it's human recording only electronic invoicing can solve this. Whatever is recorded is recorded anything shot of that realized the inventory reports. Solve invoice is the bestm

This is one big issue with large retail business all over the world ask all the big supermarket in Nigeria and all over the world one of there major problem is shop lifting from both staff and customer the truth is that you can never be able to completely stop it but you can minimize it to the bearest minimum......one profile your sale person very well before employment, make sure they are guaranteed by competent and verifiable person, install CCTV camera at your shop, get a mole among them that can give you information about there move, the use of information technology for sale and receipt, get an in-house auditor ,always tell they imaginary story how people that steal from you in the past come back later in life begging you to forgive them after they never made headway in life that one of they just died last week

My friend that has big store at computer village in lagos experienced such what he did was wonderful , he let the front part of the store to an alfa that repairs computers , he rarely talk to wemen so his presence makes the two sales ladies uncomfortable then he employed two sales ladys , one igbo the other yoruba both christians , both of the ladies no de agree coupled with the alfa that rarely talk with wemen , so when I visited , he said once he comes the alfa will tell him how these ladies have been playing with his shop , after the igbo lady will tell him her own with igbo while the yoruba lady will later report what happened against the other lady , so nothing misses from his shop
Re: My Sales Boys/girls Steal From Me. by Yankee101: 1:04pm On Mar 17, 2018
Both methods are cool. CCTV and computer generated receipts.

But the old method that always works is stock tracking using an online CRM and stock cards. It may slow your operations at start but you can have an idea of when and by whom money got lost or pilfered.

Come to work on a weekend and take stock of all you have and put a stock card in every section. Every single sale must be recorded. At hand pver of shifts and/or end of day, they must spend time to count and update all the stock cards and balance any missing item against the cash in your till/bank. That way any sales person who has a shortage of cash/stock will be responsible it's replacement from their bonuses.

I said bonuses because you should pay them really really well. So when it comes time to recover your money you can do it really really well too.
