You want to know why those countries that you want to run to have better public health facilities?

It is because the amount of money people pay in TAXES...sometimes as much as 50% of their income.

Plus...many of these countries are industrial countries...exporting a variety of industrial products.

Nigeria? Tax rate is between 0-24%, many people don't pay, hospital bills are kept very low. So, public facilities are in a mess because we cannot afford to keep up with the big countries.

Anyway...have fun abroad.

This is as a result of callous, greed ridden selfish Demons in leadership. What do u expect when Doctors nd other health staffs are paid peanuts after 12yrs in med school and forced to work with Little to none Hospital equipments? Things like this are just Symptoms of how severe the corruption level is, Being Alive in Nigeria is 95% luck of unkown origin and until we know this, then perhpas we will Stop "Holy ghost fire" prayers and "igbo, yoruba, Fulani nd hausa" tribal bigotry and collectively chase the cows to the ranches where they belong

Our problem is not always money , the problem about us is that we are too sentimental, nothing is based on merit. To gain admission, you need connection, to get job , you need connection, to buy fuel , you need to be friend with petrol attendants, to be well attended to at the hospital , the nurse or the doctor must be your church or mosque member or somebody you know from other source, to drink water self you need to know somebody why why why .......

Back to the matter on ground, Nigerians should understand that the government does not have the capacity to solely fund all our public hospitals. It's only in Nigeria that you see a hospital that doesn't make up to N20million a month, but will be paying salaries and expenses of N300million a month. It can never work. Nigerians must pay the real cost of healthcare, either indirectly by high taxes, or directly to the hospital or by insurance. When this is done, there will be enough money to fund the hospitals adequately. This also applies to the education sector and several other sectors.

Quality healthcare is expensive, Nigerians have to choose between cheap but low quality healthcare or high quality but expensive healthcare.

The doctors had their role to play, there are professional ways of doing things, in a case of emergency you should show great concern, if it was the doctors relative, would he have responded like that. The issue of funding you raised is a valid one, but the people are been taxed already and there is really nothing to show for it, rather law makers are paid rediculously high amount that could have been channeled for development. The whole system is in rot.

I think we will all benefit more if you name all and sundry involved in this shambolic display of ineptitude. Write a strongly worded petition to the CMD and copy everybody up the chain of command up to the Governor. Send a copy to a news outlet eg. Sahara reporters...make that several online news outlets.

This is becoming a recurring theme in the hospitals and because people will rather grieve in silence it continues to perpetuate itself. If you do not know somebody in a government hospital, you are most likely gonna end up dead. Even people who know people in hospitals have not fared any better.

This further shows the failure and how degraded our health care system is... Most of ou systems don't work as they shud... Doctors in public/federal/state hospitals go tru alot unlike their counterparts in private system. They lack so many required facilities and equipments its a frustrated system. The Govt is mostly to blame

Don't go to General Hospital without Data. I was lucky to study about jaundice online. The people at Badagry were just extorting me . I was able to understand jaundice than the personnel in charge of the ward.
Have data so as to study more about any ailment your family is being treated for.

I had a first hand experience of this. Let me state categorically that UCH is a death trap. the Nurses and Doctors dont give a damn about the patients.

My sister was diagonized with Aneurysm and was admitted to the emergency ward. She had a seizure and almost died. The nurses and auxiliaries in the ward couldnt have cared less. The day the blood clot burst was the worst day of my life

I watched her writhing in pain and screaming while nurses there just sat somewhere gisting, I held her hands and prayed like I never did before and nobody attended to her. It was almost 1 hour while I prayed non stop that one of them managed to come and ask me what is wrong.. ME!!!!

After a battery of tests and going back and forth, the doctor said we should fly her to India or she will die. He gave my sister 6 month max to live. We checked her out of the death trap named UCH. When we made inquiries on how much it will cost to take her to India, we were looking at minimum of N6m.

We didnt have a choice but to take her to MFM for prayers while assisting with medications. To God be the glory, its going in to 2 1/2 years now and she is still with us and living a perfectly normal life.

I dont pray for my any of my relatives to fall sick, but if they do I pray to God to give me enough money to get the best privately available medical care for them whether in-country or abroad.

Doctors are just wicked. They go to work by 8am, start working by 10am. Close by 12noon. On weekends, doctors dont go to work except on calls or if it is your turn. Some doctors that call themselves specialist go to work once a week. Doctors in general don't have conscience, weather private or government. When I lost my child, in the bill I saw resuscitation fee 10k. Blood I donated, I saw 30k. It is just pathetic that doctors don't have conscience.

Yes,he is wicked....for telling the truth, and nothing but the truth.

The budget for most of our hospitals is on average less than 10billion per hospital per annum . Meanwhile. their overhead costs and salary costs far exceed that of the budget.

And at the same time...if you read OP's post...you would notice that there was no defibrillator, not enough equipment. And all these advanced equipment cost millions of Naira.

When I was a houseman, I lost a neonate patient...that I had to transfuse using a syringe...because we did not have an electronic pump...because we lacked equpment like ventilators..etc.

And all these things cost money. Plus...facilities for training cost money too. And we have to do allthis on a budget for health that is less than 1 trillion naira...and hospital fees that are really chicken change.

The problem with healthcare in Nigeria is...we cannot get N20trillion naira care using N500billion naira. And the oyel that we are using...we need it to be above $140per barrel before we can say we are making money to just balance the budget. Agric is not profitable at all...despite what GEJ and PMB's Ogbeh say. So...either we raise hospital fees, or we raise taxes, or raise insurance premiums.

But since you Nigerians won't pay up....what can we do? We keep on running hospitals on lack of equipment every day. And God knows the number of times I have had to watch patients die not because of negligence...but because we did not have this or that...or because we could not afford a powerful incubator or ventilator.

So, you people better face facts. Either we find at least 20 trillion naira annually for our budget...or we borrow from Mother IMF and Father World Bank ....or we raise hospital fees/taxes. Your choice. I know some of us medics are badly behaved , but please...stop blaming us for everything.

Or shebi you want us to spend half of medical staff salaries on hospital funding?
I will leave this useless country once I am done with USMLE

I have had similar experience going to UCH and I can tell you with few exemptions, people there are animals. The nurses are no better than road side prostitutes when you consider their lackadaisical attitude. How do you explain when a patient dies , a nurse just call the relatives to come and pack their dirty

And you didn't assault her?

I would beat the living daylights out of her.

Calling a deceased person dirty to the family.

Btw. Truth be told healthcare is bleeped in this country due to the cost. We aren't willing to pay for good healthcare and only cry out when what you didn't pay for never materialises. If they ask all Nigerians to pay 5k per month for healthcare not minding if you use it or not you will hear the hullabaloo.

Problem.is even if they pay some fucker somewhere would probably steal the money and abscond.

We really are bleeped and there's no hope in sight.

The only chance you have now is to leave this shithole for ever.

Let us be the CHANGE we want. We can continue lamenting about bad governance but nothing will change much until we CHANGE ourselves.

Only if that Amala idiot had been a little bit more considerate, only if the nurses had some love in them, only if the money budgeted for stocking the hospital is not diverted into private pockets, a life would have been saved. The average Nigerian is a reflection of the government, corrupt, selfish, wicked, etcetera. We need to change ourselves.

So sad for your loss, more sad that negligence has become a practice in our public hospitals, we lost a neighbor sometimes in 2001, the wife said she met some student doctors around the corpse discussing and overhear one that responded to a question for saying "they thought us in biology but I've forgotten", tell they left, she never knew that husband has passed on. Zero Cara, zero sympathy.
