Sheuns:Equity should be what we are striving for. Equality is only achievable wen all our fingers are equal. I believe nobody wants equal fingers. |

Let me just talk on one aspect. The case of local governments chairman in naija. Let me correct some impressions. In politics, I mean in a pure democratic setting just like in naija. Political office holders are not selected, they are elected, by who? By the masses. These masses are not just male, they include females too, and from the look of things the number of females in this country is morethan that of the males. So, if elections are by voting and then no woman was voted as a local government chairman, then it is the woman's fault for not doing her job so well. Let me give u an example here. I am from Anambra state, and during the 2015 general elections, 2 out of the 3 senatorial seats were occupied by women , b4 the current by election. Those women where able to measure up with their male counterparts, they worked hard and people saw that and voted them. U cannot indicate interest in a position, got the form and then relax, waiting for people to vote u simply because u are a woman. No, it doesn't work that way. Angela Merkel of Germany is ruling them for the 4th time, u might say that they are civilized morethan we Africans but sirleaf Johnson of leberia was their president. So, my dear anyone employing gender equality in politics is for their selfish interests. Some people are saying that okonjo iwuala is currupt , some are saying otherwise, but if she should contest for any political office from her state, chances are that she will win if she put as much effort as her male counterparts put while campaigning same applies to late Dora akunyili. They made names for themselves. It is the same that all politicians in naija are all popular to those who elected them from their various states, that is why youths are not always elected because no one knew me or you or what we could do if elected. |
