Fraternal Twins

Fraternal twins are just like any other brothers and sisters in the same family who share the same biological parents. The only difference is that they just happen to have been conceived in the same month and be sharing their mother’s uterus during the same pregnancy.

Other names for fraternal twins are Non-Identical or Dizygotic Twins as they form from two completely separate eggs and sperm. This is different to identical or monozygotic (one egg) twins who form as a result of one fertilised egg splitting into two identical little people.

Fraternal twins tend to run in families – the tendency for hyper ovulation during the same menstrual cycle is a genetic trait. For women whose grandmothers, mothers, aunts or sisters had fraternal twins, the likelihood for them to have fraternal twins is higher.
Importantly, if a mother is a fraternal twin, she is more likely to have fraternal twins herself.

Fraternal twins share around 50% of their genetic makeup. This is no more than other siblings with the same biological parents.

How Do Fraternal Twins Fit?

Fraternal twins have their own little space in their mother’s uterus and are surrounded by their own amniotic membranes. They do not share a placenta and each has their own. Unlike identical twins, fraternal twins can be different genders or the same: e.g. two boys, two girls or a boy and a girl. It seems that the odds are almost equal for fraternal twins to be either the same gender or opposites.

How Do Fraternal Twins Happen?

Around 2 in every 100 births are fraternal twins and of the total numbers of twins that are born, 2/3 are fraternal. By far, the rate of fraternal twins outweighs identical or monozygotic twins. We are seeing more fraternal twins since the widespread acceptance of fertility treatments.

****Very rarely, a mother who is already pregnant releases another egg in the same month which is then fertilised by a separate sperm. This is a phenomenon known as superfetation. But this can only happen a few weeks after the first baby has been conceived. This may account for the reason why at birth, one fraternal twin can appear much larger and more mature than the other one*****

It is also possible for a woman to conceive fraternal twins with two different biological fathers. This can happen when she is already pregnant with one baby and she ovulates again. A simultaneous pregnancy occurs when the second egg is fertilised by a sperm from a different partner.

It is also possible for triplets to consist of a set of identical or fraternal twins plus one singleton. If the twins are identical it can be very clear that they are monozygotic, but if they are fraternal, they may appear like any other sibling. This is why the placenta and membranes are examined very carefully and sometimes sent away for pathology assessment. The placenta and membranes will often provide answers, along with DNA testing of each baby, when it’s not always clear whether twins are fraternal or identical.

What increases the odds of having fraternal twins?

A. When a mother has been having assisted reproductive technology, in particular medication which increases the number of eggs she is releasing.

B. If a mother is a fraternal twin herself she has around a 10% chance of having non-identical/fraternal twins herself.

C. If a mother has already had one set of fraternal twins, she is more likely to have another set.

D. The same as for any other conception – having a lot of sex in fertile times during your cycle will help to increase your chances.

E. The more babies a woman has, the higher her chances of conceiving with fraternal twins. Couples who limit the number of children they have automatically reduce their chances of having twins.

F. The older a mother is when she conceives, the greater the likelihood of her having fraternal twins. Younger mothers in their 20’s do not have the same chances of having fraternal twins as those who are in their 30’s and 40’s.

G. Mothers who are over the age of 35 have twice the likelihood of conceiving with fraternal twins.

H. Women who are of black African descent – their chances of having fraternal twins is highest of all the races. Asian women tend to have the least chances of having fraternal twins.

I. Women who eat a diet rich in yams and sweet potatoes tend to increase their chances of having fraternal twins.

J. Some studies claim that the taller a woman is, the greater the likelihood of her conceiving with fraternal twins.

There is still some debate on whether a father’s genetic influence plays any part in his daughter’s chances of conceiving with twins. If his mother was a twin, or there was a maternal tendency for twins on his side, then perhaps he does play a role in his daughter’s tendency for hyper ovulation. This may be where the saying that “twins skip a generation” holds some truth. Obviously, fathers do not ovulate but their genetic influence of twinning on his side of the family may have a flow on effect to his daughters.

What do fraternal twins look like?

At birth it can be very difficult to tell fraternal twins apart. Sometimes it’s not until there are two placentas identified that that it is clear that the twins are fraternal. But remember, identical twins can also have two placentas, depending on the stage of cell multiplication that they divided.

But as they mature, each fraternal twin develops their own unique appearance and often turns out to be no more similar to look at than any other siblings in the same family.

Alternately, fraternal twins can appear completely different to each other right from birth, with different hair colouring, facial features, sizes and birth weights. If they are very alike, even parents can have difficulty telling them apart.

How will I know if I’m pregnant with fraternal twins?

Some women suspect they are pregnant with twins long before it is confirmed scientifically. Interestingly, mothers of twins will often say they – always knew? they were going to have twin babies; that they dreamt they would have them, or for a long time felt sure that twins were in their future. You won’t be sure unless you are experiencing very severe pregnancy symptoms or you have had an ultrasound which identified two embryos. But it’s not always clear in the very early stages if twins are identical or fraternal.

If you come from a family where fraternal twins are common, you are likely to have inherited the twin gene yourself. You will be aware that you have higher than average chances of conceiving with fraternal twins yourself.

Twins can be diagnosed during a 12 week scan, although they may be detected as early as 6 weeks if two sacs can be seen. By 12 weeks a mother can be told if she is carrying identical or fraternal twins.

Identical twins are surrounded by only two thin layers of amnion, the inner sac lining. But fraternal twins are surrounded by both the two layers of amnion as well as two outer layers of membranes, known as the chorion. Fraternal twins each have their own placenta.

What are the risks of having fraternal twins?

The risks are very similar to those as when having identical twins, though without the same potential risk of having twin to twin transfusion.

An increased likelihood of:

1. Caesarian section delivery.
2. Prematurity and low birth weight as a result of intra uterine growth restriction.
3. Pregnancy induced hypertension.
4. Gestational Diabetes.
5. Placenta Praevia.
6. A longer postnatal recovery time.

What Are My Chances Of Having TWINS?

~ Age!
Women over 30 years are more likely to conceive twins.

~ Fertility Assistance!
Having fertility assistance such as IVF or taking fertility drugs. Get pregnant while you are on oral contraceptives i.e Try to conceive straight after you have stopped taking the pill.

~ Race!
If you are of African/American heritage.

~ Already have a set of twins.
Conceiving with twins again is higher in women who have already had them.

~ Women who are obese with BMI over 30 are more likely to conceive twin.

~ Taller women tend to conceive more twins.
Women averaging 164.8 cm in height (about 5' 4.8"wink were more likely to conceive twins than women averaging 161.8 cm (about 5' 3.7"wink. One theory is that better nutrition (which may lead to more height) is partially behind the increased rate of twins in taller women.

~ Taking folic acid supplement before you conceive.
If you are planning to conceive, start taking folic acid supplements one month before conception.

~ Encourage your partner to eat some oysters. Oysters are excellent source of zinc.

~ Be a twin yourself.

~ Eating more yams/sweet potatoes!
Women who live in areas where yams are a major component of their diet are in higher chances f conceiving twins.

~ Breastfeeding.
It is possible to get pregnant when breastfeeding—and with twins!

Cough Remedies for Babies and Toddlers:

1. Try Saline Drops

When your child's nose is stuffy, he/she may have trouble breathing, sleeping, and eating. Saline nasal drops can thin the mucus in her nose and shrink swollen airways. Use them two or three times per day; any more often could make her nose sore.

Saline drops may make it easier to remove mucus from your child's nose. For babies, try a suction bulb. If your toddler can blow her nose with your help, give that a try.

2. Increase Fluids

When your child isn't feeling well, give more drinks than usual. Extra fluids can thin out her mucus so her nose won't be as stuffy and she’ll cough up all that gunk more easily.

Most drinks, like water, juice, and milk, are fine. Warm liquids like chicken soup, apple cider, or hot chocolate can soothe a sore throat. Be sure they’re warm, not hot, to avoid burns.

Babies under 6 months should only drink breast milk or formula, not water or juice. But you may offer more milk than usual for coughs or colds.

3. Give a Little Honey

It soothes sore throats and eases coughs. It may even work better for children than OTC cough medicines. Give your child 1/2 teaspoon of honey before bedtime. But never give it to a child less than a year old. It can make them very ill.

4. Raise Baby's Head

Have you ever slept with extra pillows when you had a stuffy nose to breathe more easily? This trick works for babies, too. Simply place a pillow or folded towel under the head of your baby's mattress to create a slight angle. This will raise the head safely and help with breathing.

5. Lower Fevers

Some colds and coughs come with a slight fever. If your baby or toddler has a fever, follow these steps:

i. Babies under 1 month: Call your pediatrician. Fever isn’t normal.
ii. Babies under 3 months: Call the doctor for advice.
iii. Babies 3 to 6 months: Give acetaminophen every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Follow dosage guidelines closely, and only use the syringe that came with the medicine, not a household spoon.
iv. Babies 6 months or older and toddlers: Give acetaminophen every 4 to 6 hours or ibuprofen every 6 to 8 hours. Don't give both drugs at the same time -- it could lead to accidental overdose.

6. Serve Easy-to-swallow Foods

Babies and toddlers with scratchy, sore throats often don't want to eat because it hurts to swallow. Feed them foods that go down more easily.

Toddlers and babies who eat solids may prefer soft, smooth foods. Try baby cereal, flavored gelatin, pap, yogurt, or applesauce. If they prefer warmer foods, try chicken broth or freshly made pudding. Babies 6 months and younger should stick with breast milk or baby formula.

Try them instead of over-the-counter medicines. They’d be feeling better in no time. But be sure to seek medical if symptoms are persistent.

Weird and Totally Normal Facts About Pregnancy❤️

1. Once you are about four months pregnant, your baby begins to urinate inside of you. In fact, they pee up to one liter a day! If that doesn't gross you out, knowing that your little one drinks it surely will.

2. Most women experience swelling in their feet during pregnancy. Because of water weight and other extra fluid, your feet can grow up to one full shoe size! In fact, some women's feet stay that size after their baby is born.

3. our uterus begins around the size of a small peach, then stretches to the size of a watermelon. For reference, that's about 500 times its original size! How incredible! (And a scary reminder for when it's time for the baby to come out!)

4. If you are tall or overweight, you have a greater chance of carrying multiples.

5. A baby has all of his or her fingerprints by 9-12 weeks in the womb!

6. At the end of your pregnancy, your placenta alone will produce the same amount of estrogen that a non-pregnant woman produces in 3 years!

7. Babies have been documented doing a number of things while inside the womb. From sucking their thumbs and holding hands, to masturbating and waving hello, you never know what you might see during an ultrasound!

8. The longest pregnancy on record was 375 days. In case math isn't your strong suit, that's longer than one calendar year!

9. Nine in 10 women experience a change in skin tone during pregnancy.

10. Pregnant women have an increased blood volume, so they experience bloody noses and bloody gums quite frequently.

11. Speaking of increased blood volume, did you know that your heart actually grows during pregnancy? It works harder and pumps more blood for that growing baby!

12. Babies cry in the womb. Because of all of the fluid, you can't hear them. But it's still kind of sad and scary.

13. Pregnancy hormones can do amazing things for your nails and hair. But after birth? You can expect your hair to fall out in alarming amounts.

14. Between 16 and 22 weeks, your doctor may be able to do an ultrasound to tell your baby's gender. Be mindful that these tests are only 70-95 percent accurate.

15. Some pregnant women lactate in late pregnancy at the sound of someone else's baby crying.

16. Pregnant women are more prone to broken bones because of a hormone called relaxin. The hormone allows your joints to soften so that your hips and pelvis can open up for birth.

17. Pregnant women do have a heightened sense of smell. The reason? It's meant to help them steer clear of foods they shouldn't eat because of their growing baby.

18. Three out of 4 women develop a linea nigra during pregnancy. The linea nigra (Latin for "black line"wink is a dark, vertical line that runs down the abdomen. Sometimes it goes away after birth. Sometimes it doesn't.

19. Dad gaining weight too? Sharing pregnancy symptoms with your baby daddy is a thing. Scientists have documented this happening all over the world!

20. The only natural induction method that is scientifically proven is nipple stimulation. (All that talk of pineapples and eggplant parmesan is crap!)

21. In utero, baby girls develop all of the reproductive eggs they will ever use. Baby boys don't develop sperm until puberty.

22. Pregnant women have less oxygen in their blood, which is what causes "pregnancy brain," or forgetfulness.

23. In utero, babies develop a waxy, cream cheese-like coating called vernix. Many babies are born with vernix residue.

24. Pregnant women have what's called a mucous plug — that is as disgusting as it sounds. It is at the opening of the cervix and serves to prevent bacteria from reaching the womb. It will pass as your body gets ready for labor.

25. Once pregnant, your body develops an organ called the placenta. Humans are the only mammals to not routinely ingest their placenta after birth. Fun fact: Placenta is Latin for "cake"!

26. One in 3 women give birth via Cesarean section. This number has tripled in the last 10 years!

27. It is true that women who suffer from heartburn during pregnancy are more likely to have babies born with lots of hair.

28. One in every 2000 babies is born with teeth. Most of the time, they have to be pulled shortly after birth.

29. Orgasms can induce contractions. If you are past your due date, it's a good excuse to get busy!

30. Babies in utero develop hair all over their bodies called lanugo. It looks like a fur coat! They usually shed this hair before they are born.

Still on pregnancy and babies!

Do you realise you carry your pregnancy yourself, you know all the morning sicknesses, weakness, vomitting etc and all other challenges that you went through, or is it the labour pain (let us be realistic, you did not just sleep and wake up to see your baby next to you like they use to say...lol).
Why would someone start dictating to you how to treat or handle your baby. The likes of mother, mother in law, neighbour, friends etc.

Your baby is tender and needs tender care. Here are some tips that can help alleviate some of most of the discomforts they exhibit.

1. Always wash your hand before feeding your baby.

2. Breast feed new born every 1 hour, because their stomach is like the size of a ping pong ball (table tennis ball) they can't consume more than 10-15mls at once.

3. Burp then (rub their back for him/her to belch), don't lay them down immediately after breastfeeding, this process relieves colicky pain.

4. Change their diapers as often as the need arises

5. Use vaseline petroleum jelly for their buttocks

6. Always keep them warm, do not over wrap them

7. Avoid the use of powder on their body to avoid cough and catarrh

8. ONLY give analgesic (paracetamol) if there is obvious fever

9. Apply ordinary towel soak in water on any part of injection site that swells (immunisations) for example. Do not massage injection site

10. Keep all small object away from their reach.

11. If your baby cries a lot, try and press a little harder on both sides of their ears, if they cry more, then it may be earache that's the problem. Take him/her to the hospital immediately.

COUGH AND COLD IN BABIES:

The effect of cough could be very irritating to both baby and mother.

The following DIY will help relieve the symptoms:

Don't use cough medicine for a baby under 4 month or offer your babies and children aspirin either. It can trigger a rare condition called 'Reye’s syndrome', which can make the condition fatal. Use paracetamol if need be in case of fever.

1. If you are breast feeding (pls continue), breastfeed to hydrate your baby
2. If your child is over a year old, increase his/her intake of vitamin-C rich juice.
3. Keep your baby's room comfortably warm.
4. Unless recommended by your doctor, do not buy cold medicine for your baby.
5. Keep your baby away from any sort of smoke, perfume, spray, mosquito coil, or otapiapia.
6. If your child is unable to sleep at night due to congestion, you can heat up water, pour in a bucket, let it steam the bathroom, sit down in the warm bathroom with your baby for some time, the heat will loosen the congestion in your baby's nose.
7. A warm bath is a good idea.
8. Nutmeg is a good remedy, peel and grind to fine powder, mix with water then apply on the forehead, chest and back.
9. Elevate your baby's head with an additional towel for easy breathing but DON'T do this for a baby under 1 year.
10. Allow the baby to rest as much as possible.
11. Keep your baby away from ill people.
12. Wash your hands before feeding your baby.
13. Clean your baby's toys & the surrounding space.
14. Use a light sheet to cover the body of your baby.
15. Nursing upright gives faster relief from the cold & its symptoms.
16. Apply petroleum jelly to your baby’s nose (outside), which helps to reduce the irritation.
17. Call your doctor when your baby starts rubbing at their ears or cries when sucking during the feeding.

StrongWoman333:
STRETCH MARK!!
Stretch marks, also called striae gravidarum, looks like indented streaks in the skin.

Pregnancy is one of the most common times when women notice stretch marks. In fact, it’s estimated that 50 to 90 percent of pregnant women will develop stretch marks before delivery.
Hormones during pregnancy may make you more prone to stretch marks. And a good number of pregnant women will notice stretch marks starting in the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy.

In pregnancy, it appears mainly most on the breast, abdomen thigh.

TIPS INTO PREVENTING STRETCH MARK DURING PREGNANCY:

1. Weight control: gaining and loosing weight contribute to stretch marks

2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty water (8 glasses a day).
Drink herbal tea. Choosing teas without caffeine it helps the body stay hydrated, and can alleviate the boredom of drinking only water every day.
Also eat watery fruits and vegetables. Choose watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, honeydew, and other watery fruits.

3. Healthy diet: Eating a nutrient-rich food helps boost the skin health. Make sure your diet includes foods rich in vitamins.

4. Include Vitamin C in your diet: Vitamin C can be found in many fruits and vegetables. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons, are especially good sources of vitamin C.

5. Vitamin D: The easiest way to get vitamin D is through exposure to the sun(don't sun yourself). The vitamin is also commonly added to bread, cereal, and dairy products like milk or yogurt.

6. Zinc. Foods rich in zinc include chicken, lamb, beef, eggs, nuts, legumes, fish and whole grains it helps keep the skin healthy.

7. When you develop itching either on the breast or abdomen, try not to scratch but rub on them.

8. Shea butter is good to apply

10. Oils such as: Bio oil, coconut oil, essential oil, castor oil are very good to start applying before formation of stretch marks in pregnancy.

11. Palmer Cocoa butter cream is a favorite among expecting mothers

12. Exercise during pregnancy: Perform exercises that makes pregnancy easier on your body. You can stretch your hands, legs.
Dancing is very good, Swimming, Kegel exercises, and other simple movements can help keep your blood moving and keep you more comfortable during pregnancy.

Hello everyone, I don't know if this is off. Please pardon me if it is. I really need some help and tips from experienced Mama's in the house.

I've been ttc since June 2016. After a year we both went for the tests, I've even done HSG and all. The results came out good, except progesterone which is 5.2 and the gynae said its low. In my last appointment he prescribed Clomid, and gave us dates. He said to take the Clomid from day 2 to day 6 of the cycle. The should have sex on day 10, 12, and 14. He said if after the cycle I don't get a positive result, I should use the Clomid again in the next cycle.

Is there anyone who has used Clomid before? What should I be expecting? Any drug reaction? Does it work immediately, or how many cycles does it take? Is it also true that a 5.2 progesterone cannot conceive normally?

I'd have asked my gynae all these bit Luth gynaecologists are so impatient.

Hello able mamas in house. May we all deliver safely in Jesus name.

I was scared of the brown spotting not stopping since 6weeks gestation so last week Wednesday, I went to emergency at the general hospital I registered and got admitted immediately for threatened miscarriage. Since Wednesday, I'm just on lexotan 1.5mg and bed rest while I did blood, hvs and urinalysis. The blood test showed negative malaria parasite and other test was available this evening. No b.p., no pain, just little brown blood stain when I pee. Today I did scan and the baby is growing perfectly at 17weeks, normal heartbeat, adequate amniotic fluid and anterior placenta.
What's bothering is I'm not seeing changes. The senior doctor prescribed vasoprin and duvaston before the test was available today. I learnt the vasoprin is for blood pressure which the nurse said my bp is between 83 - 95 and it's normal.

Sorry for the long post, here are the test result and the prescription. Does it correlate to threatened miscarriage or I should wait for another doctor because different doctors are just coming with different view.

Pls help me mention those who know about medical.

Clomid is a 6 month circle, at the end you must stop trying to avoid cancer.
I did Clomid after all sciences failed, conceived in my 1st circle, miscarried.
Continued and got BFP on my 3rd circle, it is God, not clomid.
Most Doctors discourage the use if Clomid, since it's your fertility doctor, please go on, and you must be closely monitored.
I don't remember my progesterone level...
God will do it... have faith.

Side effects, the first time I used I got really hot flushes and my cm got extra really stretchy and I got pregnant, but
It was a molar pregnancy, when I used it next, I got really strong ovulation that the pain made it hard to walk sef, and it worked after 4 cycles on 100g a day...in all, I would pick evergreen woman over Clomid, it really works. All those tests, especially the hsg would not be in vain for u honey, your bfp is here

PS, don't wait for those dates, just keep doing the baby dance, before my first child, I used to ovulate of DAY 10, imagine, so days.12...14...etc would have been a waste of time, just enjoy yourself and relax

LilBenny:

Hi Mamas, I just discovered this thread ...am sure It will be beneficial. Am 22wks pregnant ,due month...July , sex... female. I only found out I have fibroid 2weeks ago after complaining of pelvic pain, I feel better now after the use of analgesic. I don't have any kind of food cravings and I don't eat excessively either. I pray this journey continue to be smooth and may we all deliver safely in Jesus name .

I really font feel comfortable with you getting your results read here. This because the result is just a fraction of your medical history. Only your doctor knows all.
Now whenever I'm on admission or when my son was, I always sneak a peek in the chart (that folder that contains everything about me).
What I look for is what my ailment is. Usually it ends with a ? (Diagnosis) . I google it.
Then I look for the treatment plan, I google each step and note the drugs and dosage with time. Make one nurse no go use me learn work.
I discuss the treatment plan (Prognosis) with my doctor when they make rounds in the mornings or evenings. Never when he is alone. He has to be with his superiors or juniors. It would be difficult to ignore me then wink
I let them know from the onset that I don't fancy drugs being pumped into me. Whenever I don't feel comfy with any drug, I don't take it and no nurse can make me.

Talk to your doctor but first arm yourself with the right knowledge and questions. I've come to realise that most doctors can be very condescending and would assume that you won't understand even if they try to explain to you.

Type keywords such as "should vasoprin be prescribed to pregnant women with low blood pressure"
I think vasoprin is aspirin and its a blood thinner (not sure, please don't panic) find out if someone bleeding should be taking it.
Talk to your doctor.

Good luck mama. kiss
