Ibo is the anglicized version. Just as name of places like Anambara, Owerre , Onicha etc go by their anglicized forms.

Actually Yorubas coined that name "igbo".. The igbos at that time didn't know how to read and write.

I'm happy they prefer the Yoruba coined "igbo" to the colonial masters "ibo"

The OP got it right. Your friend may be the type of Igbo we call "Mama born me for Lagos" or "Them tell me say I be Igbo".

It is "igbo" originally but how ever "Ibo" is the anglicized version using the English vocabulary,and this mispronouncement was done by the illegitimate semi igbo speakers from the South-souths and non speakers from other regions.

How the both pronounciations are accepted though partially but one still remains officially and formally which is "igbo"

The "semi speakers from the South-South have a more central Igbo dialect than Wawa in Enugu and abakaliki and Nsukka in the East. Matter of fact Okpoto before Ezilo in Enugu don't even speak Igbo at all.

Just like Egba, Ijebu dialects etc.. all classed under Yoruba

It's not true.
Both the people and the language are called 'Igbo'.

ELECTION is actually ÌBÒ in Yorùbá.

Igbo is the correct spelling in that language while Ibo is the spelling in English. I don't know why Igbos take offence when it is spelt as 'Ibo' when using it in the English language context
