I can never forget an incident that happened in this regard embarassed

I decided to delete unwanted numbers from my phone and saw an aunt's number who died a few years back. Curiousity got the best part of me and i decided to flash the number. Probably out of fear, i didnt allow it ring before i cut off.

Apparently it rang and the new owner decided to pay me back with evil, he decided to call back by 2 or 3am! You bet i almost died when i saw her number calling at that ungodly hour angry needless to say i deleted the number instantly cheesy

I tried this on a new Sim I bought after receiving a message from a bank which I don't have account with. Base on the message, I use the code to load 1,000 Naira and it was successful! I got alert on the Sim. The person has about 364k in his account. shocked

It's been almost two months now, no call from the owner and no transaction has been done on the account - no deposit, no withdrawal. I'm beginning to think maybe the owner is dead o!

Fear no let me use the Sim again cos it was registered with my real details my drivers license and my real home address. Make efcc no come visit man.

So, in a case where someone died leaving money in his bank account his family does not know about, what would happen to the money?

tofolo:
The account is supposed to become inactive after 6months and dormant after 1yr so you cant get money out again after that period. And the money would just stay that way with the bank. wink

That's the answer to all your questions

U need a four digit pin to authorize any transaction using the short codes so there is no way u buy card do transfer without having to know the owners four Digits

I traveled out of Nigeria for about five years and when returned, decided to call my former number out of curiosity and someone else answered it. So yeah I guess they reissue numbers after a period of inactivity..which makes sense because I guess they can only generate so many 11 digit combinations. Numbers might soon run out actually.

This ur story get as e be. U need the last 4 digit of the acct owners ATM card or his pin to transfer airtime to a 3rd party number. (at least that's how it works for GTB, don't know about other Banks but I think it should be so for security reasons). So do u have the ATM card of the acct owners? Just curious.
exactly I wonder oo

i decided to ask this question after certain events.

So i decided to call my late dads mobile number (its mtn tho) out if plain curiosity, I was surprised it rang n sumone picked it, i immediately established friendship wit this individual who intimated me on how he bought d number from mtn office. He explained dat immediately he inserted d number, calls started coming n even bank alerts...

Mind u, my late dad used dis number for more dan 10years n barely 2years after his death his number was sold to a new customer.

my questions:
the
1. Is it legal for mtn to do dis? (make i sue na na)

2. is dia a procedure for deactivating sim numbers? (i can imagine if dis sim had fallen into d hands of fraudsters)

my nairaland family pls advice..

After a long time of not using a sim it will be deactivated and recycled to a new sim but same number.

My father died 2010 and have been using it up till now so no big deal in using a deceased number

There should be a policy on that:
I know lines that have not be used either receive, call out or send sms after 6 months will be "jammed".
Afterwards, recycled and sold out.

They sell the numbers to new subscribers. My uncle recently mistakingly called my grandmother's number who died almost three years ago and someone else picked the call.

@OP, your post made me remember when i lost my elder brother to a road accident, his bigger phone was not recovered. we called the number severally without success.

After some months, out of curiosity tried the number again, alas! it rang. i was scared when the receiver picked the call and i ended the call immediately, thinking it was a ghost.

Meanwhile, am still using his other number as my main line till date. it was my first line though.

I think the best is not to recycle the sim to avoid story that touch.

If they don't recycle numbers, they will run out at some point.

One of my lines is like that too, I receive alert every month. The woman has 1.6 million naira in her account, Eco bank, meanwhile no withdrawals has been made for once, it has always been credit alert. But it has never dawned on me for one day to register that my sim for ussd. Maybe it's because I'm not using Eco bank.
Maybe I would try search for her on Facebook since her full names reflects on the messages i receive and ask her to go to her bank and rectify the alert issue.

So if I buy a new sim I could just use *737*1000# . Maybe the former owner had a gtb account. Or just search on Facebook and probably hack some1. .. just thinking out loud

If the bank account is still open n the number connected to it, u can recharge.

You can go to the bank to lay a complaint so they deregister the line. I don't know if they'll do it sha. Meanwhile you fit epp me with the sim grin

Currently, my popular Mtn that I'm using right now belong to a deceased person, base on this topic. I was using the line for the past 10 yrs, I wanted to register the line with my GTB acct, they said somebody has done it before with same line. Later on, I started receiving his monthly statement of acct and his anniversary date of birth messages from the bank.
Thank God he doesn't have any tangible amount in the acct.

You can report to MTN about that you dad's number. They will retrieve from the new customer and a compensation will be paid to the new customer.

We have such a case in our firm where we paid N20,000 to retrieve the line. The new customer was receiving most of the official messages from our office and most of our customers were calling him. To avoid any fraud bn perpetrated through that line, we have to pay for the compensation.

Second case is the one in which my colleague keep receiving text messages, bulk sms and calls from unknown ppl on his line. That must be a number of a dead person.
One day he received this message with the short code on how to buy airtime through his account. To his surprise, he tried the code and N500 airtime was credited to his account. This must have bn debited to the account of the deceased. He has bn worried about this and has refused trying that code again.
If he happens to be fraudulent, he will keep making withdrawals/transfer from the account of the dead person.

So what the Network Providers do is to resell those numbers. The best you can do is visit the account that this number is tied to, ask them to remove the number to avoid making withdrawal from the account.

I have an Airtell line and I am presently out of Naija for a project and might not be back in Naija until next year. I didn't leave my sim behind with anyone for privacy concern. I plan recharging it maybe every 2 months from my account online. Hope my line is safe this way. I don't want it deactivated and sold out o.

Or. What else can I do?

When my brother travelled out, he gave his SIM to our mum to keep using so it doesn't get blocked. The line is tied with his bank accounts. So you can give it to your siblings or folks to keep. The person you give will be helping you recharge it and keep it active.

Numbers are recycled by network providers after four months if it is no longer active (i.e if it is not inserted in a phone, no recharge made, no calls or text) and sold out to customers from other regions.
