Lolz!

I was with a client recently who proudly demonstrated same for the GoodWe inverter - he disconnected the battery leaving PV on at full power at midday - the inverter threw an error, disconnected the PV and shut down safely.

This is one up for the Victron and GoodWe folks.

Interestingly, it is not that MorningStar blows up anytime you disconnect battery with PV on - there is a power clamp limit that it can safely clamp - I have disconnected battery with incoming 2000w PV and the MorningStar took the hit and continued working - this on a test CC that I salvaged of course grin The CC I blew had a 4.5kw array putting out 3.2kw (MorningStar was current limiting) when the battery MCB tripped and released the magic smoke - the newest firmware have updated the internal workings to better use the electronic protections in the MorningStar. For EPever, they can clamp between 1.1 and 1.5times max rated current I believe.

I will write to MorningStar as well to clarify the clamp current limits and exactly how much improvement the new firmware updates have made.

pranil:
Out of curiosity, I asked Victron if their charge controller will survive without battery - Interestingly there is no issue even if the breaker trips

I believe Morningstar and EPEVER are known for failures any other which come with the warning not to switch on without battery

Many thanks for your very clear answers Oga Chris.

It appears Europe is very anal about regulations for chemical substances coming in and out of the Eurozone and HazMat classifications - I am privy to several incidents where we paid heavily to obtain permits to bring in chemicals and catalysts used for refinery operations and now sending back the HazMat spent chemicals for safe disposal in an Eurozone based landfill is proving to be a total nightmare.

Chief niyi, wanna ask a question.

When I was using 1000w 12v inverter with 540watts Panels via 40A CC on my 2*200AH batteries connected in parallel, the CC drops about 30A on the 400Ah batteries.

Now I'm using 2000watts 24v inverter same 540watts Panels via 40A CC on my 2*200AH batteries connected in series, the CC drops about 14A on the 400Ah batteries. My question is doe the CC adjust based on the battery connection or voltage?

my ePever has in truth faced a battery line trip and didn't fail.
It took me about 15 minutes before I found out . . the CC shut itself down
and rebooted nicely upon connection

Less volts = more amps; and vice versa . .

since you increased voltage to 24V; battery would now be seeing half the amps under the same conditions

CC adjusts based on voltage

Oga Makavele is on point.

Its the same CC and same panels and the power output in both 12v and 24v configurations is roughly the same.

Power = Amps × Volts

So if we assume your batteries charged at a reference 14.4volts in your 12v parallel setup and 28.8volts in your 24v series setup (14.4 × 2 [12v batteries in series])

Then at 12v nominal, Panel/CC power output was 30Amps × 14.4volts = 432watts.

At 24v nominal, Panel/CC power output is 14Amps × 28.8volts = 403watts.

So you see that the Panel/CC power output is almost the same - differences may be due to change of charging profile, ambient weather at the time you checked e.t.c

Haha. Chief Makavele has/had always been helpful too.

Trust me, I respect all contributions and I stayed in my last post, that when you don't know the way, you must ask for direction.

That's my policy in life. Tomorrow, I can even ask you for guidance cheesy

Flow batteries (fuel cells) are like ur internal combustion engines that uses the chemical energy of a fuel to thermally produce mechanic energy by the controlled combustion of the fuel in a closed chamber but only that fuel cells convert chemical energy directly to electrical energy making them more efficient and with a potential of 80% efficiency however material is still consumed. Though a solar system can be incorporated to electrolyse water into hydrogen that can be stored and used but the initial investment is high. Lithium on the other hand makes energy harness and storage easier. I consider these systems as perpetual motion machine of probably the 4th kind
pranil:

in fact for stationary storage applications, it is well accepted fact that future belongs to flow batteries. The lithiums currently cannot exceed 1kW to 4 KWH ratio making them pretty costly for low power demand longer duration applications. While flow batteries have limitless energy storage capacity depending on storage volume available - mainly due to the fact that the fundamental difference between conventional batteries and flow cells is that energy is stored as the electrode material in conventional batteries but as the electrolyte in flow cells.

Questions is will flow batteries development quickly catch up OR LITHIUM remains the king due to EV applications and recycling for the next decade

Just completed a DIY.

Now 4 panels in series and parallel connection.

270watts *2 (Series)
270watts +250 watts (Series)
Then paralleled the two series'

Total wattage now 1040w from Panels
PV= 68v
Amps dropping on batteries now 30.1A
200Ah *2 in series
2kva Prag Pure sine wave

Thanks

Congratulations.... Upgrading is always sweet when the output is as expected. Solar as a way of energy independence is the way to go

I am concerned about what happens when the inverter feeds incoming mains (or generator power) directly to house appliances when it's in bypass mode. The other day my gen produced almost 290V and blew up the charging circuitry of my DC fans. Another time the voltage from PHCN was so low (it got as bad as 130VAC) the LED lights were barely providing any visibility, yet the inverter refused to take over. In both cases it just just fed the out-of-range voltage straight to house devices. I would like the inverter to only feed regulated power to appliances.

Pranil mentioned the AVS30 but it seems to only work with a range of 'acceptable' voltages - it doesn't step up/down and will just cut off if dirty power comes in. Would a 5kva relay-stabilizer (non-servo because i'm cutting costs and also because I don't mind the +/- 10% variation in output voltage) be appropriate to put in between mains power and a 3kva inverter proper?

Congrats, davodyguy.

But please permit me, guys... isn't the total watts from the panels in this configuration not supposed to be limited to 270 + 250 = 520 Watts? Or, have I been missing/muddling up some of my lessons learnt? (Honestly, I'm relatively new to all of this.)

That's what happens when you use mismatched panels ...

250 + 350 will not give 600 because the 350 panel will be dragged down and behave like the 250 one

so you'll be getting circa 500 instead.

Naaa.. i was just kidding ooo

You need a stab after the mains, i.e. Ur inverter connects to a stab.
Otherwise, garbage in, garbage out!

Okay..

It actually depends the VOC, ISC and connection (either series or parallel)

If your VOC is the same 350+250 will give you up to 580

I do get 200+ from 140 + 80 and not 160
