Take a good look at the gutter in question. It's supposed to be a roadside drainage but it sure looks like a pond to me TBH
Exactly. I asked the question because you seemed to be against the use of the word 'careless' in the article.

the ''çarelessly built gutter'' is the property of the akwa ibom government

it was constructed under akwa ibom government's spec, guidelines and supervision

if there is any liability here, it is the liability of the akwa ibom govt that provided the specs for the gutter

the only time when JB could have been liable was during construction. it is no longer a construction site.

what is required is that AKSG construct a fence by the canal.

Who will make them pay?

Except they probably see good civil rights advocacy lawyers helping them fight this on Pro Bono level, i doubt if this poor family could afford the litigation fees..

Which is where you see the impact of a good government, working police & justice institutions & a sane society.

The Construction Co. would probably fight valiantly in court, wriggling in all the grey areas of culpability or not, but eventually the family'll get something & some closure. Naija matter tie me sha!
Oyinbo man knows that the govt doesn't care about it's people do anything they do in terms project execution will fly. African govt are very weak when dealing with this his companies and they know that's why they feel the can play around in African countries without severe consequences. E.g. see the oil spill in Niger delta, i heard shell only paid $82million for environmental damage done to that area, but in activity that s a damage worth billions of dollars in an oyinbo man country. God help us

That's easy because there's no rule of law. All that noise they're making about democracy is hogwash.
Nigerian leaders are bigger than their national institutions, so anytimei want to bend the law or break it outrightly, all I have to do is pally up a big man or be one myself.
Foreigners know that. And they know how to work our system with smooth lies, bribes & dogs-paradise offered to leaders.

Not just lazy..

We have lawless lawyers, who believe by their actions, that justice is reserved for the rich. "No merit in pro bono", as one of them told me recently.
You're very correct.

Sad. Nothing can bring him back, but the best way to prevent this from happening to others is to make Julius Berger pay heavily in court.
My broda, that will not do anything. The right thing to do is to go after Julius Berger in court, the Nigerians in charge that okayed and signed off and maybe (collected bribe money), for the design, the inspectors that okayed the work after completion... etc... It is a whole system of bribery and corruption.

I keep wondering why we are still having the archaic open drainage system in the 21st century. It does not only pose a threat to pedestrians but also motorists. We urgently need to do away with this ugly system.

unnecesarily too wide. What does that mean to you?
How wide should a canal be for it to be branded "unnecessarily too wide"?

That's why Nigeria won't truly be great until Nigeria stops this ignoring the crimes of these so called bigmenand prosecute them if if the mess up while in govt. Look at a country like South Korea just jail it's immediate past president and they are currently also going a former president to prosecute him for corruption while in govt. Can Nigeria do same? No!!!! That's why well be a 3rd world country for a long time
