I wasn't even looking round the room because I was not ready to see any blue paper that would destabilize me, I was just looking towards the other side of the room

VO: Passport and i-20 (passes it to him)

VO: Which school are you going to?
ME: Cleveland state university Ohio

VO: Course?
ME: Criminology

VO: (looks at me with surprise and says why criminology)
ME: I am someone who I love been involved in solving situations and in Nigeria , we are dealing with a lot to criminal situations (nods in agreement with me,for my mind I say OK O) and I believe that an indept knowledge of criminology is not only going to help me in understanding the psychologies that are behide crimes but it would also help me in finding suitable measures to tackle crimes from frequent occurrence in my country and also with this degree I would be able to contribute to the security of lives and properties of the people that are living in Nigeria.

VO:What kind of Job would you get with this degree in Nigeria
ME: I will take up a job with a law enforcement agency here in Nigeria where I would be able to utilize the skills and knowledge which I would have learnt in helping my country to tackle the crimes that we are facing from occurring frequently.

VO:Who is paying?
ME: My uncle

VO: What does he do?
ME: He works with Google as a( VO cuts in and says Google here in Nigeria or US) here in Nigeria as a product marketing manager for Nigeria and he owns a digital agency that is in partnership with Google here in Nigeria where they provide services to telecommunications , banks and multinational companies.

VO: Are you married
ME: No I am not

VO: When did you finish high school?
ME: 2009

VO: What have you been doing since?
ME: I first went to obtain my National diploma degree

VO: What Jobs have you been doing?
ME: I worked with educare foundation where we create awareness against rape, drug and child abuse and I also voluntarily worked with( he cuts me here and then asks

VO: what course your ND IN and what year did you finish?
ME: In masscomm and finished in 2013

VO: OK continue about your voluntary job
ME: Chai na so i forget wayti i dey say o i forgot the name of the voluntary job company, I just started smiling so much and then he smiled back(this is why i said he is a nice guy, I interpreted the smile as calm down girl we are just having a conversation) and immediately i remembered. I worked with the committee encouraging corporate philanthropy on raising funds to buy a mobile cancer clinic for Lagos and present I work with a security firm as a customer service rep(ALL IN DS160).

VO: Have you traveled out before
ME: I havent had any reason to until now(looks up and gives me a look that means like seriously)

VO; Are you married?
ME: NO

VO:How many schools did you apply to?
ME:3

VO: How many admitted you and name them
ME: MTSU and Michigan state university, MTSU admitted me

VO: Why pick cleveland over MTSU?
ME; I chose csu because they have a criminology research center where I would be exposed to know how criminal minds work and they dont just teach the theory aspect of criminology alone but they teach with a lot of practical case studies which better prepares me on how to face the criminal world in real life. na so i shut up my mouth o because seriously I had nothing more to say( I remember texrem telling me to find more reasons for this particular question but I was too lazy to)

VO:Stared typing just when I thought it was over he then said can I see you ND Transcript
ME; For my mind I say which kind wahala be this then i said " Cleveland state university did not use my ND transcript in giving me admission my WAEC result was used.

VO: Can I see it,
ME: Passed it with confidence unto say na so so distinctions dey there.

VO: Can i see your uncle's bank statement...

And then the waiting started and me praying to God to be approved. he returns my WAEC result and starts to scrutinize my bank statement and then drops it, I just thought I would be put on AP, then he says your uncle works with Google and I SAY yes. and he gives me the statement and says I will be...trust me that is the only thing I heard. i dont even know where he brought out the white paper from.

ME; Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day.
na so i dey say thank you Jesus till i got to the car park.

One thing I would like to say is that it is good to read this forum thoroughly but you might get confused at some points so guys please be careful. I read to the extent that I almost lost my mind. Thanks to texrem for calling me to order.

Hello House, am a silent follower, I need your advice,

I studied Arts for undergraduate and presently working as a customer care representative. I applied to Oklahoma State University to study International Studies. These course has little to do with my course or work. Will like to know if its a Red flag at the interview. Looking to apply to other schools also.

I am a female microbiology graduate with a cgpa of 2.48. After my NYSC i did post graduate diploma in geographic information system (GIS) and had cgpa of 4.25. Now i want to proceed to do my masters in public health, community health or any related course in the US.

Rule Number 1: Don't lie to your VO
Rule Number 2: Rule Number 1

Those guys are trained psychologists and can easily detect if you're lying through your eyes and your body.

If you finished secondary school in 2014, you can tell the VO that you were studying a course here in Nigeria but you should be able to strongly convince the VO why s(he) let you go another degree.


If you applied to 3 schools, tell the VO that you applied to 3 schools.

If I may ask, why not masters?

Hi guys ; 2.2 in quantity surveying isn't a great result to get admission for masters in project management or even get scholarships, in the US, I'm I not supposed to sit for exams like GRE or TOEFl to help boost my chances or should I apply before sitting for the exams. Plz I'm confused here I need urgent answer.
Secondly, can I still apply for 2019 fall admission? Considering the short period time remaining? Or should I patiently prepare for spring 2019?

Lastly, which exam do I take? GRE or TOEFL considering my course of study and school.

I'll try to answer this without being a dream-killer. According to your first interview, it went horribly wrong because you simply didn't prepare for your interview. Your answer was too generic, those people are tired of hearing the same things over and over and it gets frustrating for them at a point.

Going back to do the same thing, expecting a different result was just wrong. Changing the embassy isn't going to do much if you're still going to repeat the same mistakes. She kept asking: WHAT has changed? Your answer was self-indicting. Nothing has changed hence the decision also isn't gonna change. If you go again in May, they'd gladly take your application fee and deny you IF you make the same mistake.

Now that we have covered what you did wrong, how do you correct it? First, until there's something significantly different in your application and/or what you're going to say next time you go, please don't waste that money. Secondly, read about your school, your course, the city, the ranking, etc. and use convincing words to show you are a good student who put in work to secure the admission.

Avoid statements like "well known for its well structured curriculum and a high quality research program which aliens to my area of interest", instead, say something original, something that really shows you put in work and have a particular reason to CHOOSE the school, course, etc. Don't just say "my career goals", tell them specifically what your area of interest/career goal is and what about that school/course is going to help you reach that goal and how it's going to do so.

A quick example: I intend to start a poultry business in Nigeria after my studies (instead of I wanna set up a business when I'm back), and ABC university's department of Agriculture is well known for teaching students eco-friendly practices in the 21st century (instead of ABC university's agric dept is ranked highly). I believe learning from a school like that would set me apart from my rivals. (Don't stop there, say something original like because eco-friendly agriculture in Nigeria is non-existent, and you think you'd have an upper hand). Etc. When you keep talking like you know what you're doing, the VO nods and moves to next question.

Always speak like you REALLY know what you're doing and you have a plan.

Finally, PLEASE, make sure something about your application changes before you reapply.

While switching from Arts (and working as a CCR) to International studies in itself is not a problem or red flag as you put it, proving that it's a decision that took time and serious research to make is important. That's what you should be thinking of.

America is the land of the free, a country of opportunities. You're free to choose whatever, change your mind whenever, make mistakes, etc., the VO only wants to see that you put effort, know what you're doing and that you have what it takes to succeed in Grad school.

If you had a son who studied History at Undergrad level, comes to ask you to sell your house for money so he can go get a Master's degree in Physics at the University of Ibadan for example, aren't you going to ask that boy to convince you on why you should invest in such an idea? It may look impossible, but don't underestimate the power of determination, enthusiasm and focus.

I hope that analogy gives you an idea of what I'm trying to say. Have a great day.
