There’s a book, I think, “In Biafra, Africa Died”, where the mind of the colonisers was revealed in a conversation.

The British saw themselves in the North. They did not opt for the Yorubas because they were deemed to be untrustworthy; they didn’t opt for the Igbos because they were worried that it will be impossible to make them malleable as their intelligence and quest for the white man’s education will make them hard to be subservient.
