Hello the brillant gurus of nairaland,

please i need your help, please i have done my first degree (Biochemistry - GP 2.6/4.0) and Masters degree Environmental technology GP 4.1/5.0) currently studying my Phd(Doctorate) now, but i truly want to study another MSC in environmental engineering , environmental sustenability or environmental studies related courses.

I have gotten my Toefl-IBT result already - score 90.

please my questions are these:

1. I need relatively cheap but good USA Science Graduate schools, which cheap schools do you think i could apply in USA doing an environmental related course? I thought my siblings would help take care of the school fees but i will pay from my pocket, i have kept 2million naira down now in my bank account for the fees/tuition. I will still transfer more for this purpose.

2.Can i still meet up the Fall Batch(September).

3. Since i have done my Masters already hope the VO wont wonder why masters again, well the answer is that i want a better foundation when it comes to environmental field work.

4. Are there cheap Msc Environmental courses in Maryland, Baltimore schools? as i have my sister and uncle there.

5. Do i need a GRE? (i dont want to throw away money as some schools dont need it)

Thanks alot, would appreciate quick responses as university of texas brownville i wrote just said i wont be able to join them in september as deadline has passed.

This F-1 visa thing is not tough but there's paucity or info. Actually little info on detail process. I'm lost here.
The Sevis fee and the 64,400 visa fee at Gtbank, which one comes first?
Secondly i don't know how to dash out Sevis fee amount to piple I don't know or see, so how exactly can I pay this Sevis fee?
Useful info needed pls
Anyone can come first but you have to pay the SEVIS at least 3 days to your interview to reflect or else you might be denied. If you have trust issues then take a trip to Cotonu to make the SEVIS payment, you cant pay it in Nigeria

Get admission, accept, receive i20 then pay sevis and then Visa feee . it is now 57600 and not 64,400 ......... sevis and gt bank no one must come before the other , however before you attend your visa interview the sevis process must be completed and you go with a printout of payment . GIve it at least 3 to 4 days pay sevis before interview

sevis cannot be paid in nigeria ,cannot be paid by card for nigerians either . so the best is western union abroad or money order . if you have some in the US or UK they can help you make this payment .

also we have some trusted members here that help with Sevis like Walspring

I hope this is an experience you learn from. You should learn to take responsibility and stop blaming others for your mistakes. I'm sure you wrote those words in bold in the heat of the moment so I won't dwell on them.

When you're calm, sober and can think clearly without your emotions getting in the way, you should think of a much better plan. Finish school and prepare better for Master's degree admission.

VOs are professionals! Not only are they trained to sniff out incoherent lies, they've got so much experience that they've almost seen/heard it all. You'll need something big to lie your way through and from your interview, I'm sure you didn't even convince yourself. Don't let this weigh you down, it's part of the experience.

Better luck next time. God bless America you. smiley

If you Channeled this determination more positively, you'd be in a better situation. No private tutoring from me would change your performance. You're asking people to tell you what to say, i.e. how to lie to get a visa and I distanced myself from that.

You're letting your desperation get the best of you and it's not making you think clearly. If you haven't reapplied yet, PLEASE don't waste that money. Give it a month or two to rethink what you really wanna do. They'd gladly take your money and send you away if you're still going with this story.

I'm sorry, I can't help you with fabricated stories to convince a VO to get a visa. Try other people, or better yet, listen to better advice.

On the flip side, I really wish you use the "I'm gonna prove all of you wrong" determination to prepare better and get the visa eventually, I'd be the first to give you props for being "smart".

Have a nice day, sir.

Look up each school's program website and note what's unique about them and dwell especially on what makes your choice better in comparison.

Me: (this was where the rubbish started) I was trying to tell him why I chose Cleveland State University but he said no.. I should compare them.. I was try to give a point he cuts in..

VO: why do you choose liberal Arts??

You were supposed to tell him about your aspirations and how this degree will help you fulfill them. Identify the various challenges in Nigeria you could address with your degree

Me: I chose liberal arts because it concerns it self more about humanity and it deals with some aspects like logical ethical peace keeping peace building and disputes settlementation.. before I finish he cuts in

VO: how will this program help you??

He gave you another opportunity to answer the above question. You can get into the Nigeria Police with a secondary school degree too. Stating the problems your degree will help you tackle in the Nigeria Police force could have been better.

Me: I will come back to Nigeria get employed with the law enforcement agencies.. the Nigerian police department to be precise

Ok. I'll be fair to you and analyze your transcript and explain where you goofed.

1. You said you chose 3 schools, you didn't.
2. When he asked you to compare the schools you chose, you were supposed to do just that... COMPARE. (Your failure here made the VO think you didn't apply to more than the school you kept talking about)
3. You were asked WHY did you choose liberal arts? You tried to define Liberal arts and talk about it but failed to say WHY YOU chose to study it.
4. HOW will this program help you? Again, you only told him what you'd be going back home to do. NOTHING related to how the program was going to add anything of value to you.

General conclusion: FROM YOUR TRANSCRIPT, you need to work on understanding a question before answering it. Know what information someone wants from you and work on providing ONLY that information. Take a 3-5 second pause to understand a question before you speak. When in doubt, ask the interviewer to repeat the question or ask "what do you mean?"

It's better to not answer something at all and let an interviewer think you're not good enough, than to open your mouth, say the wrong things and remove all doubt.

I hope this helps.

You should go for PhD. Your masters cGPA is good and you should secure a good admit with full tuition waiver and stipend if you do well in your GRE

The good thing is, if you get a Phd offer in STEM course,it is usually funded 95% of the time. All you need to pay is mandatory fees every semester which ranges from $400 - $2500 depending on the school and sometimes your Advisor might pay that for you too. You also get paid a stipend every month of about $1200 - $3000 which also depends on the school. Forget that plan of paying for a Phd from your pocket, that will be a 'disaster'

Dear @alayomini,

I read your proposed transcript. Very good job!!! I can see what you're trying to do but I hope you're able to express yourself more concisely than what I just read. I'll make a few comments.

1. DO NOT reveal more than you are asked. Trying to say more sometimes only puts you in more trouble. For example:
VO: any standardized tests?
You: Yes (or Yes, IELTS).
VO: Which?
You: IELTS. (Saying GRE wasn't required when not asked just opens an unnecessary can of worms). This is just an example, same thing you did in the question about Marriage. A simple "Yes, I'm married and I have a 5 month old daughter" is all you need. All the extras about traditional/court etc. can make anyone think whatever you did wasn't even legal.

Another instance of this: "Have you traveled before?", "No, I have not". If they want more info, they'd ask why. If they don't, smile and move on.

"Who is paying for your studies?"
"My dad, and also I'll be paying for mini expenses like books". If they wanna know more, they'll ask "what does he do?" Then you can answer... again, being straight to the point gives the impression you really understand what's being asked and people appreciate that.

"When did you graduate and what did you study?"
Your first sentence answered the question. The other part was irrelevant. If they wanna know more, they'd ask. You'll appreciate this when they ask you really tough questions that'd throw you off balance. In such situations, revealing info they didn't ask could tell them something they're going to exploit.

2. If you have to talk for long, make sure the answer to the question you're asked is contained in the first sentence, or first two.

Example: how will this course help you when you get back to Nigeria?
"This course will..." should be the first thing you say.

My reason is... because of heavy accent, low volume, speaking for too long, a VO can lose track of what you're trying to say. Chances are they're not even listening to your 4th or 5th sentence and that's the reason they cut most people off. In their heads, they're like: "what's this one saying?"

3. I keep saying, it is important to understand a question. When in doubt, ask for clarification. It really helps.

"How will your Master help you in a place of work?"
I read that and thought: This question is asking why a Graduate degree is going to be of any advantage to you (for example over someone with just a Bachelor's." Not just your course, a graduate degree.

In this case, I'd have asked the interviewer what he was asking me just to be sure.

In a nutshell, your answers are really good and I get the feeling you're someone who really knows what they're doing. You just need to keep preparing to stand a better chance. If you keep preparing, I have a feeling you'd do a good job.

I hope this helps. Have a nice day.

What help can really be offered .... so time for honest truth .Guru here have no say in a school rule

if its the school rules then that their rule. You either find another school or accept the situation.

You can call to clarify but if they say that their rules and you fall under conditional then that the rule .
