Dr Joe Abah tweeted a piece of information stating that only 50% of primary 4 students in the North East can read single words of 3 or 4 letters. Someone replied saying it is not a surprise because they use Hausa to teach English language in the north. Rubbish. Is English their language? How many British can speak Hausa language? Their religion encourages teachings in Arabic.This is why we condemn the removal of the Islamic inscriptions on the centenary notes. It's a symbol of Arabic pride and a motivation for northern Muslims who doesn't like to speak English

If HAUSA is what they understand, go ahead and teach them the English with Hausa na.... Simple!!!

I think it's just religion that messed the North up.. While white Christian missionaries we're building schools in Calabar, Badagry, Abia, and most southern states.. The North were still engrossed with fighting "infidels" They recognised the importance of Western education not too long ago.

Yes nah. And that's why when you see an educated Hausa man, he is very intelligent. The local language makes them understand it.

While serving in Kebbi State in 2006 as a maths teacher in JSS Karaye, Maiyama LGA. I have one Musa who interprets mathematics to the JS 3 students. Musa did his primary school in sokoto and can speak pidgin English.


When i say 2 + 2 = 4, students will ask Musa in Hausa what that means, Musa will ask me in pidgin...i will explain to Musa in pidgin and he will explain to the class in Hausa.


I taught JS3 students addition, subtraction, divison...then we couldn't treat multiplication because they stopped coming to school due to the confusion it caused them. They preferred Makaranta Islamia to the Western education. Principal asked me to stop. Junior WAEC is a story for another day.

My service year was fun shaa!

This one is not claiming o. During my service year, I reported to the school principal that the students were not paying attention to my class, they couldn't even understand me. She said that I should use Hausa to teach them. How I wan learn that one? She went ahead to say; "after all, in China, they use Chinese...why can't we be proud of our language" yen yen yen.

It didn't go down well with us and the school. When we were leaving for service, they called us for a sentforth party and served us, each with a sachet of caparison.

I started respecting the Hausas after I saw a teacher teach Further Maths purely in Hausa language at a school in Hotoro.

This is a normal thing in every state in Nigeria. Ask those that went to primary & secondary schools in the village

There is nothing really wrong in using the mother tongue to teach English in as much as it is properly translated. While growing up in the east one of the ways our teachers used to teach us English language was to write Igbo words and then translate them in English and vice versa, it makes it easier for the pupil to understand. So if they can write down words in Hausa and translate properly, I don't see anything wrong with that.

I remember one time during my teaching practice in Tambuwal, Sokoto.

I would tell the students after teaching:" Do you understand, do u understand"
They would all chorus "yes"

But when I tell them :"Kun gane?(do u understand in Hausa)....
They all chorused :"ah ah" which means NO.


Since dat day, I jux reapply to a christian private school.

Any Corper teaching in the north is wasting his time

It's very tru. I teach In a secondary school where a pupil in jss2 don't no wat "come" means in English.
