Video games are all about death: if we're not jumping on the heads of Goombas in Mario, we're mowing down innocent pedestrians in Grand Theft Auto, blowing soldiers away in Call of Duty and ripping harpies apart in God of War.

Whatever game you decide to play, there's a fair chance you're going to rack up an impressive body count, and though most enemies we encounter are nameless goons, it's our battles against bosses and, eventually, the main antagonist which generally stick in our minds the most.

And of course, why not? These characters have names and personalities: their voice actors help sell their villainy, and following their heinous acts, we just can't wait to see them put to death, whether by our own hand or not.

These 9 video game villains were so loathed by gamers that their deaths had no choice but to be epic, as any less would have been a huge let-down.

We've got fiery projectiles, more than one bad guy getting ground into meaty chunks, fantastic knife action, one solemn goodbye, and the most tense quick-draw in video game history.

These games come from entirely different quarters, but they all have one common feature: each gave gamers a tremendously satisfying end to their antagonist. What more could we ask for?

Liquid Snake - Metal Gear Solid
Siblings can be such a nuisance at times. This nuisance just happened to be the cloned twin brother of Solid Snake.

He deceives Snake by murdering and stealing the identity of Master Miller, and fooling him into activating Metal Gear REX, which all eventually leads into a hand to hand battle on top of REX.

Oh and he’s not dead yet, as he’s still around to hunt you down in an epic car chase, and even that proved not to be enough to end the deluded menace. During his last attempt to finish Snake, his body succumbed to the FOXDIE virus. … until the sequel when he and Ocelot became … actually you know what we’re not even gonna touch that.

Uberto Alberti - Assassin's Creed II
Ezio's famiy is captured, charged with treason, and sentenced to death. Not knowing what to do, he delivers evidence to his father's friend Uberto, knowing he would be able to put these accusations to rest.

Unfortunately, Uberto betrays the Auditores and does not bring this forward in the trial, causing the death of Ezio's father and two brothers.

What makes this betrayal hurt so much, is that Uberto caused the death of a child in his betrayal. This makes it all the sweeter when Ezio guts him.

Measter Seymour - Final Fantasy X
Have you ever met that villain that just doesn't know how to stay dead? Yeah, well Seymour's that guy.

After learning of his treachery, Tidus and his party goes to kill him and end up being branded traitors.

Then he reappears alive now getting married to Yuna, and kills one of Auron’s friends in the process, where you fight him again. But he’s still alive, and now wipes out Khimari’s Tribe on his 3rd life. His tyranny finally comes to an end inside Sin when Yuna provides him a long overdue sending.

Officer Tenpenny - Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

It never got more crooked than the crooked police of Los Santos, although the definitive centerpiece of the unruliness was no other than Officer Tenpenny.

Through extortion and blackmail, Tenpenny pulled the strings to the dirty doings of the city, exclusively using protagonist CJ as his personal pawn.

In Tenpenny's effort to escape Los Santos, he's thwarted by CJ in a desperate car chase. Crashing and running over an overpass, the broken and battered Tenpenny suffers a slow death.

Edgar Ross - Red Dead Redemption
Shot to death (a lot) by Jack Marston, the son of famed outlaw John (the protagonist of the game), who was murdered by Ross and his men three years prior.

Jack tracks him down to a New Mexico river, where Jack duels with the now-retired Ross, blasting him to pieces. Why It's So Satisfying? Because Ross killed the damn hero of the game, that's why! We were so into John Marston as a character: he was so bada** so when he got brutally cut down, on his own ranch no less, we wanted revenge.

The End - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Assuming you aren't going for a "stamina kill", there are a number of ways to bring about The End's death: if you're quick, you can snipe him at the Ponizovje Warehouse, long before the boss fight takes place, therefore avoiding it completely.

Secondly, you can move your PS2 clock forward a week in order for him to die of old age, or you can do it the hard way, by out-hunting the hunter and taking him down in the jungle.

Why It's So Satisfying? Because The End is easily the most challenging and inventive boss in the entire MGS series. If you don't change up your camo and make good use of items like thermal goggles, The End will drain your stamina and take you back to the jail time and time again (he never kills you).

Assuming you don't opt for one of the easier options, the first time around this battle can easily last upwards of an hour due to the harsh terrain and The End's extreme accuracy when firing tranq rounds. That moment when you finally blast him in the head enough times to take him down is so ridiculously satisfying because he's a b**** of a boss, and if you go about it the "real" way, you really need to put some hard work in to put an end to, well,

Majora's Mask - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
As you play the same three days over and over again in this game, you come to see a lot of people suffering terrible ordeals at the hands of the masked Skull Kid, but what's worse is knowing that everyone you meet in this game is going to die if you don't stop the moon from crashing into the Earth. That's what makes this so satisfying. This boss isn't just an obstacle standing between you and the end credits. He is a villain you genuinely want to stop, for the sake of everyone in all of the land

David - The Last Of Us
David leads a faction of cannibals and comes across Ellie in an infected ambush.

Upon discovering his ill intentions, Ellie attempts to escape, but later finds herself locked in an old abandoned building with him alone, and worse; its implied he intends to…do other things to her.

Maneuvering herself quietly to escape, Ellie must play the most creepiest game of hide and seek ever. In a final desperate struggle Ellie breaks free and hacks away at his face with his own machete. On top of his demise, it’s also a relief to see Ellie survive what was clearly a traumatic experience.
