tdayof:We don't have enough lift helicopters for an air assault. Besides, SF teams as used by big militaries in the scenario you've just described are used mainly as Forward Air Controllers. |

bidex111:From what we can see, only the SBS is close to what we can describe as a strategic asset. It's not a bad thing, threats determine operational requirements. Units like the AFSF are the tip of the spear. Of course they can carry out HVT Kill or Capture, but that unit is primarily a very specialized infantry unit. Same as the Regiment from the Air Force. Only the SBS feels like a Navy Seal or SAS type unit. |

frumentius:Common sense which seems to constantly elude you should tell you even without asking that Nigerian special units are more fashioned operationally like the Rangers or at best MARSOC. You claim to be in the military, no? I believe you've also followed the Nigerian conflict, what does the AFSF which is Nigeria's premier COIN unit operate as? 4 Likes |

Henry240:Twice now I have to agree with you! To an extent. NNSBS is close, but not yet a strategic asset. Not the unit's fault, but due to the limitations of the NN. |

Henry240: The NNSBSC are the best SF assets we've got, yes I agree with that. We shouldn't forget that the defense HQ selected the best from Navy, Army, Airforce SF even the Police fore where not excempted from the training in North East-Europe. Calling the AFSF a specialized infantry unit will be a total bad comparison way out of line These guys are better equipped, trained and given tough task against a deadly terrorist sect. 1 Like |

bidex111:From open source information, i know all there is to know of the AFSF. I'm saying they are a special forces unit, but not a unit like the SEALs or SAS. They are more like the Golden Dawn Division in Iraq, the 2nd Commando from Australia, Rangers or MARSOC from America. |

Henry240: Whit these description of yours I think I agree with your definition of a dedicated elite unit like the SAS, SEAL TEAM & the SPETNAZ. Why would you compare the rangers with MARSOC..? The United States military Armagh are the Army, MARSOC, Navy, Airforce and the Coast Guard, while the rangers his an elite force of the United States Army. |

Stephandeswardt: Please quickly do a research on the United States army RANGERS if it's an elite unit/ SF or even best SF units in the world. You might change your opinion. |

bidex111:you need to understand that the US armed forces is the most powerful forces in the world funded by the richest country in the world.so they have the luxury to have different elite specialist regiments or units and most of them carrying out almost similar mission.if US military wanted to airlift a whole battalion of rangers,it can because it can afford it.how many countries have enough helicopters to airlift a battalion and willing to loose several of those helicopters to enemy fire !? |

frumentius:You know, this came up in a conversation with a buddy of mine. NNSBS in its founding objectives is a strategic asset to the navy and a larger extent the DHQ (I don't need to remind you the throes in our Niger Delta 13yrs back) Now, the Army in what I might call an afterthought decided to spring up its own special forces (in the process jumping some ground/foundation work) by converting an existing Bn to a SF unit. As at the time this was done there was no aim, objective, doctrine heck even a selection course. All the brass then needed was a handful of men that could use little resources to get enough result to make them look good Now,the uplooking news is that the Army has been pruning its rationale for having a special command & I reckon as time wears on they'd finally decide want they want & how they want it (just like how Proforce ARA first came out & now when it has been pruned ) 1 Like |

Stephandeswardt:Think this thing through baba First, how do they recruit/select What type of missions do they undertake So if AFSF is Ranger, what is the Army Strike Group? Light Infantry? come on now! We need to stop all these Hollywood classifications I don't know why someone will call a unit that spends days in the field in lie up positions, hunting & killing would be compared to a unit used for straight raids(Direct action) & the likes |
Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by Odunayaw(m): 1:08am On Apr 30, 2018 |
Stephandeswardt:Let's not get ahead of ourselves What role are the NAF Regt guys filling? Ans; Static Base and Outer Perimeter Security. They are not rangers or whatsoever, they are a job specific infantry group. Example is RAF Regt. RNZAF Air Defence Guards. NAF itself has a SF unit which they have seized every opportunity to publicize (God knows if they sprung from QRF) and I think these are the ones you claim are "working their way towards SBS standard" You see folks the first thing the remaining service arm seem to put second is WHAT ARE WE BUILDING THIS TEAM FOR Units are created to add a flavor into the Spec ops pot of soup . It is only when a unit is diligent in its Founding mission we can then say they have one standard or the other. Example; LRRP of Sri Lanka, Recces of RSA. They didn't earn a reputation by wearing fanciful webbings & tricked out Rifles...no,they became masters in the niche they were created for 2 Likes |

frumentius: The Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service (NNSBS) is one of Nigeria's strategic options in military operations. It is a strategic asset. It is not close as you opine but the deal. The Unit sees no limitations and has no limitations. You don't get that NNSBS badge with limitations. As we speak the NNSBS has covert footprints all over West Africa. They don't tell you what they do. |
Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by Covert1: 5:46am On Apr 30, 2018 |
bidex111: The AFSF is not a specialized infantry unit nor the NAF' special forces regiment. It is more. The AFSF is more like your varying degrees of capabilities within the Spetsnaz and has proven more effective than most US trained Green Berets type teams under comparable circumstances if not worse. The NAF Regiment comes with a high skill set more than your average Special Forces and is presently a strategic asset to the Armed forces and gearing towards SAS type capability to rival the SBS primarily in Air & Land Ops. We already have ranger type like teams in the 72nd Mobile Strike Force and other such elements that already existed even the now Bike Battalion. That these nomenclatures like the Rangers or 82nd Airborne or the like exist elsewhere doesn't make them an exceptional skill set just that they are seen and given vent in popular culture—such competencies exist even in countries with less popular acclaim. |

Henry240:today's strategic advantage of Mass Airborne operations is suicidal even for America.it will result in substantial loss of lives and aircrafts, significantly reducing its tactical and strategic impact. due to the increasingly Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) environments developed by most countries, who have access to cheap, mobile, accurate and effective air defense weapon systems |
