In Nigeria, thousands of young people are addicted to codeine cough syrup – a medicine that’s become a street drug.

But who makes this syrup? And who sells it to Nigeria’s students?

The BBC has gone undercover to investigate.

Drug abuse has no pleasant end. It all ends in pain, anguish and sorrow. Say No to drug abuse.

It is not a tribal defect. It cuts across all tribes and religions. The best way to avoid the destruction that comes with it, is to avoid it. Say NO to drugs

Even some society women are not left out of this scourge. Drinking syrup like water. So, codeine abuse isn't gender, tribe, religion, or age sensitive. The appropriate agency needs to step up its game to stop this deadly hydra headed scourge.

Serious side effects
slow heart rate, weak pulse, fainting, shallow breathing;
feeling like you might pass out,
confusion, agitation, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior,feelings of extreme happiness or sadness;
seizure (convulsions),problems with urination ,liver damage , tremor e.t.c

Hearing this codeine stuff for the first time, never knew people now abuse the drug.

It's an issue of drug abuse and not the drug itself. Drug abuse is everywhere and people are not learning from its danger.

Sometimes when NBC ban a song I just see them as trying to be relevant again, that stupid song that praised codeine is still playing on our airwaves. Do they know the influence of songs like this on the youths?

Codeine is similar to cocaine. They both give "high" and are both addictive. So people buy the cough syrup with codeine to get high
