AutoJoshNG:
The Lagos state government does not shy from announcing how they want Lagos to be reputed as a Mega city.

Lagos state, which is home to about 22 million Nigerians, is currently ranked the 5th largest economy in Africa. The state government is making deliberate effort to push it to the 3rd largest economy on the continent.

To earn and promote the image of a Mega City, the Lagos state government has been putting in massive infrastructures in place in critical sectors of the Lagos economy such as transport sector, road construction and rehabilitation, construction of lay-bys, and flyovers among others, etc.

On February 6, 2017, Governor Ambode announced that he was planning to ban Danfo buses in the metropolis by the end of the year. This he believes is necessary, as Danfos do not compliment the state’s ambition to be recognized as a respectable Mega city.

In his words, “When I wake up in the morning and see all these yellow buses and see Okada and all kinds of tricycles and then we claim we are a mega city, that is not true and we must first acknowledge that that is a faulty connectivity that we are running”.

No doubt, the government is putting in enormous efforts to achieve the status of one of the world’s Mega Cities.

However, no one appears to have noticed that the idea of Lagos becoming a Mega city of reckoning amounts to a cruel joke if the state government still builds or retains open drainage systems.

Indeed, the sight of some of these drainage systems does no justice to the much desired status of Lagos as a mega city.

See more pictures of some very filthy and disgraceful drainage systems in Lagos HERE.

Or what do you think?

https://autojosh.com/mega-city-why-does-the-lagos-state-government-still-construct-open-drainage-system/

We've been talking about it at different forums and gatherings. Building covered drainages will not only help beautifying the roads and make them look more neat and tidy, but will also help reduce malaria because mosquitoes won't have a place to easily fester.

If Lagos is really serious, it will have to destroy hundreds of thousands or maybe even millions of glorified shanties posing as dwellings of human habitation, roadside markets, and seriously depopulate by finding a way of chasing millions out of the state (it may even have to adopt the Israeli or Eurppean model of 'bribing' some people to just leave the overpopulated state for sanity's sake). Anything less na wash.

The I hear you say depopulate? In Your dreams. Lagos that is even happy that other states are currently lazy to develop their region to acceptable standard so that they can keep reaping it.

Who told you most of the occupants like the over congested Lagos and neck-breaking traffic? These people will leave at the slightest opportunity...

Thank you very much. I'm yet to see the rationale behind open gutters. It is not beautiful. The worse is when there are walkways, but gutters beside them. What is wrong in covering everywhere?

Part of Surulere has it (everywhere is covered). Calabar under D.Duke did well. Uyo? None of the cretins (Akpabio & Udom) did not and is not do(ing) it (covering gutters).

cause it's cheap for these useless and shameless politicians to construct, then they spend part of the project money to host a commissioning jamboree, inviting press, their fellow useless politicians and thugs to witness the amazing feat of constructing a rickety road with open gutters on the sides. yay!!

ediots

Why won't the gutters be dirty? See all the aboki on the street. Jobless, lazy, begging... they will of course make the area less appealing with their waste.

To completely beautify Lagos means you have to remove them from the state and send them back to their homes up north.

Even the international airport is full of them, begging attempting to carry your luggage some even trying to steal.

In higher societies they put regulations in place to curb this.

This is pure hate speech.

You have been warned.

It might sound harsh but the North already has a new generation of beggers to replace them, it's a cartel that needs to be broken

motherfucker:

That is quite hash and tribalistic of you to lump the whole blame on innocent beggars. The gutters are mostly blocked and abused by eveb people like you than those beggars.

I don't like Buhari and his APC evil but your comment here is damn too bias.

I think we should train ourselves to take responsibility for our own failures.

So it was the aboki that planned and built the open drainage systems in Lagos, abi?

Maybe you should see the other pictures of some more filthy drainages around Lagos here:

https://autojosh.com/mega-city-why-does-the-lagos-state-government-still-construct-open-drainage-system/

Check them out and then report back here to explain how aboki caused these filthiness.

Good point OP.
While the bulk of the blame rests on us as the residents, I must remind you that where there's no law there's no sin. Or better yet, where there's no law enforcement, abuse is inevitable. And where order is not maintained, chaos is imminent.

What is the govt doing to maintain cleanliness and order?
We have LAWMA but no strict laws against poor waste disposal. We have traffic laws but vehicles breaking every traffic law and endangering commuters lives daily by plying one-way traffic among other foolishness. Why? When the law enforcers themselves are law breakers who is to cast the first stone?

LASG has put the cart before the horse and unless they wake up with a renewed determination for the task at hand without caring whose ox is gored, Lagos will at best only be a Mega village.

Nothing wrong with paying people to vacate a place. You cannot then claim to have been 'cheated' or abused.

There's really no need for all the wheelbarrow pushers, road side barbers and touts in Lagos.

Let those people return home and ask questions of their useless LGA chairmen, traditional rulers and governors.

The Earth moving equipment require Diesel. Nigerians don't usually own companies that own NEW earth moving
equipment. It is the Arabs, Lebanese, Germans and Italians that own such good quality equipment.

Already, you have sent the contract for the gutters out to foreigners.

Who will pay for it? Will it employ any of the "Lazy" Nigerian youth who are looking for jobs?
If Dangote can approve the IMPORTATION of INDIANS to the Lekki Free Trade zone to build his refinery,
... are you not seeing why many continue to remain unemployed?

To get that nice rounded gutter, Lagosians themselves have to take over the construction. We have never
been good at working together. So we remain with rubbish gutters.

Governments do not like to to the dirty work.

ELECTRICITY TO ALL HOMES
CENTRAL SEWAGE SYSTEMS
CITY DRAINAGE NETWORKS
WATER TO ALL HOMES
LANDSCAPE PROJECTS at all Road setbacks

Why do our governments shy away from these?
Lagos, and Nigeria in general, has a long way to go.

There's nothing maga-like status in any city in Nigeria. When a country harbors illiterates, uncivilised cornballers ,hobos and uneducated rougues as leaders, then that right there is the outcome of such unfortunate circumstance.
