Awesome. What are you growing during this rainy season?

What's the rains without sweet corn? little of sack cucumber farming (I need to get it right this time around), cabbage, then of course, my beloved tomatoes for the year 2018.

Pre-planting Preparations (DAY ONE)

It's that beautiful time (Debatable though, when you have to fight diseases, pests, floods, and of course, glut of almost all vegies in the market ) of the year to do some Kitchen size backyard farming again. Yes, the rains are coming!!!

In preparation for my 2018 adventure, I hope to experiment further on the followings;

1. Cucumbers sack farming (10 sacks only)
2. Tomatoes (My very first love, I can say categorically, I never bought tomatoes throughout 3rd and 4th quarter of 2017 till now)
3. Pepper (I really have to stop going to the market just to get this alone)
4. Sweet Corn ( I so much love Igbado or Agbado... )
5. Little of Pumpkin and Lagos spinach
6. And lastly, Cabbages.

ALL ORGANICALLY PRODUCED

My garden farms tools have been dying to be put to use. lol
1. My tools at a glance (i.e hoe, seed packs, makeshift planting cups, my big vacuum pot for nursing my special seeds (?)etc)
2. My prepared compost chicken manure (Pls use gloves biko, ignore my hand usage)
3. My makeshift drip bottles
And lastly,
My bestfriend and companion, Rubbie, my favourite cat. It's definitely going to be two of us working on the farm this year

NOTE: This year is going to be fun-filled, harvest galore and lots of comical reliefs attached to my posts.

Sad thing, I would be needing those portion of the garden for other plants

Wonderful thread! Would you say sack farming is better for tomatoes? Seems you have abandoned Sophie or is it stella the cat?

Sack farming? Well, sacking farmin ;Dg was conceived out of the need to allow people grow food in places with limited resources such as; access to good land and with little water etc.

In sack farming, resources can be well managed to yield better results. I did record outstanding results from my bagged tomato plants but I will subscribe to the open field.

Note: In planting in sacks, always know about the rooting system of your choice plant. This also helps in choosing your tomato type and size of sack to use.

Thank you for responding. I will do more research on sack farming. I am already reading up on types of tomatoes and their root systems. I want to venture into sack farming to plant vegetables like - sweet peppers (yellow, green and red) and herb plants.

I want to run this along with a small scale goat farm. So utilizing space and creating strong barriers against the goats is important. I will also look into getting the best seeds to achieve my aim(s). I will create a thread to that effect when the time is ripe!

On the variety of sweet corn? Nope! I've got no idea. All I know is that it's the Yellow Sweet Corn. When next I go to get more, I will take my time to see what's written on the main bag.

Sorry my response is coming in a little late.
From the picture posted, I would say, the planting soil wasn't the best, and also kind of looks soggy and not well drained.

Please do yourself a favour, discard this batch and replant. Don't try reviving this lot. It won't do well.

NOTE: You should fortify the soil used for nursing by mixing it with compost manure. Just in case your soil is loosely packed.

SEASON TWO (OFFICIALLY BEGINS)

LAND PREPARATION
This to me remains the most difficult part. Would have just called boys in the neighborhood to help out with little compensation but hey! It's a good way to burn off the fat within (desperately look for ways to cut down my weight from 98kg )

1. Clears the old fluted pumpkin off.
2. Apply my compost chicken manure from last year.
3. Till the ground
4. Lastly, waters the entire portion.

Broke the pod apart and brought out the seeds.
From the look of things, the planting would be done ASAP because the seeds have started to break apart (sign of germination).

I will sundry for some hours and plant in the evening.

Also, prepared and planted some tomatoes / cabbage in the nursery.

I would be going to in the day to get some cucumber seeds and pepper.

Not at all. The red cups were used to nurse the cabbage seeds NOT pumpkin seeds.

The pumpkin seeds were planted directly into the soil, though it can be pre-planted too, but definitely not in those small cups.

The San marzanos are one messed up specie I tell u��� walahi only one of them got to the flowering stage, and it even still got infected so I got no fruit at all, NONE! Naija is a bastard. So I'm growing commercially this month. I got some padma 108 f1 seeds, the land is somehow small sha, 100 by 100. But it should yield something reasonable. Biko who knows any Agrotech company in Benin? And Mr. Jidestroud shay the padma variety is good enough for commercial farms?

Hi, sorry about the late response

There are quite a few reasons chlorosis occur in green plants (in this case), few possible causes ranging from poor drainage, damaged roots, compacted roots, high soil pH, and nutrient deficiencies in the plant. Nevertheless, in this particular case (Though picture not clear enough), just add manure to increase the Nitrogen level. If you practice inorganic farming (which I strongly oppose), you could introduce NPK fertilizer with more of the Nitrogen (10:5:5 of 20:10:10) or Urea with manure.

There's really nothing to worry about, your plants are doing just fine.
