I finally upgraded to MIUI 9 by downloading the update from the link shared by the other user. However, I didn't loss any of my files in the process, is this normal?

They would say that of course, so many items that were despatched on some certain dates to Nigeria still didn't touch down, these planes don't fly direct from Singapore to Nigeria, I think they stop in some other countries. I would demand an evidence( they should have an updated database)if they told me the item with my local courier.
