Hello guys,

First, I'd start with an apology!

I almost totally disappeared from here since I got to the States; believe me, it wasn't intentional but trying to grapple with a new system in one hand and balancing research/course workload on the other hand is no easy feat. That's not to say it's impossible to come back here once in a whil after you resume school but I own up for being one of the feeble-minded who can't handle too many things at a time. Apologies!

Plus, I didn't get enough funding when I was leaving so, trying to work and study must had some impact too.

Luckily, I got a 'rare' 50% scholarship the very last week of school: it was a miracle and funding for subsequent semesters seem sure from now.

Bottom line: Don't be desperate, when you are desperate you make terrible decisions that might not be easy to correct for years. When it's God's time to get things done, he'd work things out for you!

Don't be mad at yourself when things are not working as planned, I know it can be demoralizing but that's time to work on yourself, do your due diligence and research! I never advocate short cuts(tricks and other illegal things such as falsifying documents, etc). Even when you don't have the means personally, when it's the right time, God will provide support.

To balance this, It would be fair to come out clean to explain that having funding secured is one the best things you want to get done before leaving Nigeria. If writing GRE and TOEFL will make a school provide funding, prepare well for those exams and do them well: if you can't be diligent with GRE, how will you be able to cope with school demands?

Also if you're working, save as much as you can, that helps too! I think it was one of the things that helped me convince the VO.
I am somewhat very displeased when I see young folks trying to get into school but spending their 'little Nigerian salary' showing off petty clothes/things on social media. That's puerile and being short-sighted!

For some schools like mine, chances of getting funded before you arrive as Africans is rare especially in Engineering. They want you to come on your own bills the first semester, demonstrate your abilities, then you might be considered for funding. You also want to be discuss this with your program Coordinator and be very sure funding will be provided after the first semester, never assume!

Usually there are more funding opportunities during the Fall; if your school is not funding you, you may want to politely ask why and confirm if there will be funding for subsequent semesters.

In all, I'm a strong preacher of diligence, hard work, smart work and trusting God to crown your efforts.

I hope this helps someone!

My best wishes guys!

I’m currently filling my ds160 form and I’m confused with the section that says present work/ education/ training information- what are they talking about?
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by afodam247: 7:13am On May 13, 2018
They are asking for your present work status i.e where you are working right now. Or if your are studying presently (education) give details, or if its training . I think this is simple just click on the category that you belong.

Dear Nairalanders.

I am seeking admission into Msc Business Analytics ( STEM verfired) . My concern is that my friend tells me it does not guarantee permanent residency in USA. that i would still be left to chance as its quite difficult to find a company that would file for me.

kindly explain how the OPT thing works?

Me: 3 schools

Vo: list them and how many admitted you?
Me: Eastern Illinois University, Eastern Michigan University and Write State University, other gave me admission but Eastern Michigan is still pending.

Vo: Why Eastern Illinois University?
Me: I choose Eastern Illinois University because the curriculum of the University matches my career interest, EIU is rich it lots of security modules. The school class ratio is 14:1 or less and this will ease studying. Moreso I confirmed from two professors that EIU has a well equipped laboratory for Cybersecurity program and student are allowed to perform research on their field.

Vo: After your studies what is your career plan/what will this degree o for you?
Me: after my studies I will go back to Nigeria to continue my job, this degree will elevate me at my place of work and by then I will be more skilled for a greater job because I have the plan of working with NCC and EFCC to fight cyber crime in Nigeria.

Since you're coming from a background in Statistics, I'll suggest you get a Masters in Statistics especially if funding is a priority.

If you still want to do a PhD, you can do a PhD in Statistics or Machine Learning or Data Engineering or Artificial Intelligence in any of the reputed schools

Most curricula in statistics cover most aspects of analytics and machine learning - like SAS, SQL, Python, R etc. You can still fill up gaps in your curriculum by learning from YouTube.

You can work in data science or ML with a Masters in Statistics. Statistics is in fact the mother of Data Science and Analytics

Unless you have a particular school in mind or money isn't an issue, MS in Statistics is okay.

Thanks for your suggestion bro. I think it's a good one. However, from my research and experience (I stand to be corrected though)

MSc Statistics is a very useful degree to have if it interests me to work in the traditional sectors of the economy. Depends on what I would like to do with my degree. It can help me turn into a statistics teacher (which is nowhere even near the bottom list of my interest), a Quality Assurance Expert ISO 9001, a risk manager/Actuary, an Economist, a Demographic / Population - studies expert, a marketing research expert, an engineering math instructor, an Operations research and / or Decision Science Optimization Modeler, or a scientific researcher in various other fields.

Now, MSc Data sciences and Machine learning is a new area, rapidly emerging as one of the most sought after profession in the new sunrise sectors of the economy per say.

I think Data Science is better for me since I would like to find work without wasting time. However, statistics too wont put me behind.

The only difference between DS and Statistics is that the latter might not be a programming / coding savy degree, unlike the former which focuses on teaching application of optimization, analytics, statistics, math and econometrics using computing packages such as SAS toolkit, other BI - Business Intelligence modules, Data Visualization using Tableau, and the use of other programming languages and data mining methods using either or both the R code and the Python.

AI , NLP (Natural language processing), data engineering and warehousing, data wrangling and Robotics are additionally taught in a DS Program, if I decide to choose the ML specialization path.

An analytics path would be teaching less of higher level programming and engineering and more of problem solving using dashboard business/ risk / financial/ marketing analytics and EDA - Exploratory Data Tools and graphics by the defined problem category.

Now here's the problem, different universities teach DS and ML differently compared to MSc Statistics which is the mother program for all such subjects ( and i don't know why, it would have been more sexy and appealing to me if i can see any school in US that's offering both together i.e Msc. in Statistic & Data Science. So far, I've not been able to see such school)

Currently, there is a rivalry between DS and Statistics in the first world countries. Quite similar to the one that exist between traditional medicinal sciences and homeopathy at hospitals or as we see between Mathematical Economics and Behavioral Economics in the scholarly social science fields.

About the funding part; (make I giggle small) Abeg I need am o!! My father is not an OBO that can give someone 'assurance' anyhow; more reason I'll be making my final decision based on the schools that might probably offer me some sort of assistance (even if it's janitorial assistance lol I no mind) TA sef no bad although it's quite a drudge to me.

PS: I wouldn't mind if anyone that's currently studying or has studied Msc. Data Science and/or Statistics can clearly drop his/her own personal suggestion as well as it'd help make my decision.

"...14:1 or less..." this particular statement shows that your not sure of that particular fact. 14:1 should be okay.
And i'll advice you talk the Class size, reputation of the school, achievements etc... Why you picked EIU, has to be very elaborate and explanatory since you said its best for you. Talk about a yearly program or activity the school is Involved in that your looking forward to been a part of. I believe you should be able to talk until the VO is satisfied and cuts in..

Just my own little opinion. I stand to be corrected

After graduation you have the chance to work in the US for 1 year with 2 years extension if what you studied is under STEM, making a total of 3 years opt. Within the 3 years, your company can file h1b visa for you which allows you to continue working beyond Opt. If you have a masters degree, you technically have 6 chances at the H1b lottery in 3 years, if you have a bachelors you have just 3 chances in 3 years. However very few companies will employ just for opt, most companies employ with a long-term plan, meaning its not common just for a company to employ you just to do OPT.

And i feel you should remove the discussion on the laboratory part. All universities(if not all, most of the universities permitted to issue out I20,) will have a well equipped lab. And you used "a" meaning One..if am not wrong, the university of wyoming has about 10 labs,
university of Iowa has about 50 workstations available to just Computer science dept.. So i think if your talking about well equipped laboratory he VO might just think your looking for points(irrelevant)to convince him..

Or if you want to talk about laboratory, you can compare it to the other universities you applied to. Talking about the standard of the University lab(research equipments etc) to the other schools you applied to, will be a better approach.(but if you'll mention research, be clear on what particular research is going on)

...
My lil idea.. Thanks
God will crown your effort with success...
