Exploring the global appeal behind the Nigeria kit enjoying huge demand

Nigeria announced on Thursday that the national team's new 2018 kit line had hit a record three million pre-orders, far outstripping anything that preceded it.
While this was the first time such official sales figures have been announced, it's clearly a number that leaves everything else in its wake.

Such high demand for a Nigeria kit is unprecedented, but NFF Vice President Shehu Dikko explained that they the federation were informed at a meeting with Nike on Thursday that the novel, throwback design was behind the broad appeal.

"They told us Nigeria is their best selling kit due to the uniqueness," Dikko told KweséESPN, "so it appeals to everyone both from a sporting and fashion point of view."

The VP was also quick to end any scepticism about the validity of the figures.

"The three million are not actual sales but orders placed by all of their stores across the world," Dikko added. "These orders will not be delivered at once, but probably over the lifespan of the jerseys, which have a cycle of about two years.
"They cannot produce without orders, and some of these orders may not be delivered until next year," he continued, "but the stores have placed them now to ensure they have consistent supply and don't run out of stock."

It's been nearly three months since the kit reveal, and frustration has grown among Nigerians who have been unable to purchase the attire, especially with less than a month to the World Cup.

Cheap knockoffs have flooded the market as a result, retailing for around N10,000, significantly less than the expected $85 (N30,000) that the original will trade for.

This is a constant source of frustration for both the federation and its equipment suppliers, with Dikko arguing that it devalues the brand and compromises the country's ability to negotiate good deals with equipment manufacturers.

"The people who will criticise the NFF for not getting a so-called big sponsorship kit deal are the same ones who will undermine our ability to do so by buying the counterfeit jerseys," said the football official.
"It is hard to negotiate a good deal when the people you are negotiating with have to worry about fakes being sold openly in the market."

It is a situation that is almost unique to Nigeria, where sellers of the fake knockoffs advertise their wares openly online and offline with no fear of consequences.

"It is shocking," says Biola Kazeem, a sports marketing consultant.
"Nigeria is the only place where this kind of criminal behaviour will be allowed to go unchecked. Something needs to be done."

As it stands, Nike do not seem unduly troubled by the rush of fake jerseys flooding the market...perhaps the record number of orders may have had something to do with it.

I was looking at the players in the 23 man list of the Brazilian national team and suprissingly Taison and Fred from the lowly rated Ukrainian league made the list ahead of Williams Jose and Leo Baptistao from the highly rated La liga, Malcolm from the highly rated Ligue 1, Vitinho from the highly rated Russian League, Allan from the highly rated Seria A and Richarlison from the highly rated EPL. Chai!

I can't understand how a whole almighty Brazil will go so cheap and low for players in the Ukrainian league for players who did wonderfully well in the top 5 leagues in the world?

What could be the index used for selection by the Brazilian national team coach?

Then, I stumbled at this article where the coach gave the index and criteria used for selection then I know this country is successful in soccer due to their ability to choose players based on high level technical knowledge of the art and momentum of soccer. There I salute. But it isa different ball game here.

The coach didn't give a technical reason he choosed some players.

He just released the list with no explanation because na Africa we be.

Brazil coach Tite recently announced his 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and left out some pretty big names. Here is a strong starting line-up made up of Selecao stars who were not selected for the World Cup.

The 56-year-old announced his squad for the showpiece in Russia on Monday, opting to select just 23 names instead of a provisional squad, despite the deadline for the final World Cup squads only being on 4 June.

Tite gave some insight into his selection process, which was supported by his technical team.

"There were many doubts. Sometimes the decision of an athlete to be called depends on the system, the way the team acts, what I believe, what the technical committee believes," the coach explained, as quoted by Globo Esporte.

"Sometimes it's his technical momentum, solidity during the high-level playing campaign. The World Cup moment is the maximum, mentally the players have to be very strong, and they need to be in good physical shape, while we also take the technical and tactical aspect into consideration."

Despite the intensive scouting and preparations for the 23-man selection, there are still some Selecao stars who might feel hard done by.

Valencia goalkeeper Neto, for example, had a great campaign in LaLiga and was part of the latest Selecao squads, but was replaced by Brazil-based Cassio in the World Cup selection.

At the back, AS Monaco right-back Fabinho and Juventus left-back Alex Sandro would probably start for many international teams, but were not chosen by Tite.

David Luiz and Rodrigo Caio missed out as central defenders, while new FC Barcelona signing Arthur was hoping for a spot in central midfield.

Napoli midfielder Allan was one of the standout players in Serie A this season, and many hoped the uncapped player would be part of Tite's World Cup squad, but the 27-year-old was once again overlooked.

Lucas Moura and Malcom would also feature in many other teams on the wings, but they, too, were not considered good enough for Brazil. Anderson Talisca starred as an attacking midfielder for Besiktas this season, scoring 19 goals, yet the 24-year-old was also not called up.

Gremio striker Luan is reportedly on the scouting list of many Premier League sides, but the 25-year-old won't be in Russia, with Tite and his coaching team preferring other options up front.

Your 23-man list is sound and is likely to be Rohr's final official 23 give or take. Give or take two/three names that is.

With the exclusion and inclusion of two or three names, your list is Rohr's. We all can easily name Rohr's 20-21 from the 30.
The remaining two or three names which only few of us here can guess or get right is something that will stun some but not stun some others too.

But get this straight... A WC list without Simon Moses among the 23 is very unlikely based on the provisional 30. On Simy, his chances depend on how many midfielders we are gonna take to Russia. If it is five, then I see him making it.

Monreal over Alonso is a bizarre choice. Having said that their GK, DEF and MID look outstanding. All in all, not a lot of surprises here, but I am surprised they're left Marcos Alonso out. And to a lesser extent Bellerin and Fabregas as well.

Having said that, look at the players Spain, Germany and France can leave out compared to how we struggle to find 23 half decent players to fill out squad. Puts the Nigeria's Squad in perspective. You hit the nail right on the head. A well known sports blog did an on field 11 man team of guys who got snubbed by the French FA. All those 11 guys trump our squad any day. It really puts into perspective our lack of quality players. Nonetheless, this Pinnick led FA and Rohr have substantial changes to the way we approach football tournaments here in Naija. Our preparation and focus for this World Cup is a case in point. This might just be turning point for Nigerian football. Hopefully things change for the future.

The fact that we do not have the luxury to just drop players for *tactical reasons * speaks to the lack of talent that we have. Imagine Rohr dropping Iwobi and Iheanacho for *tactical reasons*, HABA!!!!

Who Will Make The Super Eagles 23-Man List For The World Cup?

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has released the 30-man provisional list for the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The list had very few surprises with inform forwards, Junior Lokosa and Simmy Nwankwo making the list. The squad is expected to resume camp on the 21st of May in Uyo. However, the final squad of just 23 players will be released on or before the deadline on June 4.

Today, we look at the possible 23 players who could make the Super Eagles squad going to Russia.


Possible 23 Man Squad Of The Super Eagles For The 2018 FIFA World Cup

Goalkeepers:
Gernot Rohr named four goalkeepers in his provisional list, with Dele Alampasu missing out on the list. Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Francis Uzoho, Daniel Akpeyi, and Plateau United shot-stopper Dele Ajiboye. Three goalkeepers are expected to make the list of 23.
I expect all, except Delete Ajiboye to make the final squad. The starting spot will be a battle between Uzoho and Ezenwa.


Defenders:
10 very good defenders were called up in the provisional list. Gernot Rohr will obviously name eight defenders in the final squad. Two players for each position, one as a backup. We already know the coach’s preferred back four of Shehu Abdullahi, Ekong, Balogun and Echiejile. Four more players will be added to this current ones, and two will be dropped. Players who are versatile will have an edge. I’m expecting Ebuehi, Omeruo, Awaziem, and Idowu to make the final list. Stephen Eze and Ola Aina might miss out.


Midfielders:
Nigeria’s midfielder position is up for grabs for only inform players. The friendly matches against Congo and England will play a part in deciding who makes the final 23 man list. 8 players were named in the 30-man provisional list, but 6 are likely to make the final cut. Mikel, Onazi and Ndidi already have their place in the squad after their strong showings in the qualifications. Uche Agbo and Mikel Agu the likely players to miss out on the final list, they have not done anything to cement their place in the National team



Forwards:
This is where the real competition lies. There so many in-form attacking options at the disposal of Gernot Rohr. The recent form of Simmy Nwankwo, Junior Lokosa and Kelechi Iheanacho will give the coach a serious selection headache. The versatility of the forwards and their performance in the friendly games will determine who makes the squad. The real competition will be between Moses Simon, Junior Lokosa and Simeon Nwankwo. Although I’m expecting the competition to be stiff, I expect Simeon Nwankwo to edge out Moses Simon and Lokosa, if he performs well in the friendlies.

Thank you! I just hope that the NFF and Nigerians, in general, would be patient enough to give Gernot Rohr a chance to continue his project regardless of how we perform in Russia. I don't like all these unrealistic expectations and targets they seem to be setting for the team. Our team is good but not that good compared with the teams we'd be facing in Russia.

As I was telling someone here a few weeks ago, our 2014 team was even more talented and more experienced than the team we're taking to Russia. The only thing we have going for us this year is the organization and hopefully the technical acumen of our current technical crew.

Jan Oblak, Juanfran, Gabriel Fernandez Arena, known as Gabi, and Fernando Torres are part of a 20-man Atletico Madrid squad that will face the Super Eagles B side in a friendly on Tuesday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Atletico announced the 20-man squad on their verified Twitter handle on Monday.

The game will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Also in the list are Ghana’s Thomas Partey, Victor Machin Perez known as Vitolo and Kevin Gameiro.

However top stars like Antoine Griezmann, Joke and Diego Costa were understandably not included due to preparations towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“The LaLiga season is over and we’re going to play a friendly in Nigeria with: Oblak, Werner, Juanfran, Sergi, Montero, Solano, Jota, Rafa Muñoz, Thomas, Gabi, Vitolo, Toni Moya, Agüero, Olabe, Mikel Carro, Joaquín, Torres, Correa, Gameiro and Borja,” Atletico wrote on their handle.

Spain’s head coach Julen Lopetegui has left out Chelsea quartet of Alvaro Morata, Marcos Alonso, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas from his final squad list for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Lopetegui also left out Manchester United duo of Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.

Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez and Atletico winger Vitolo who scored four goals in five appearances in Spain’s qualifying campaign are also missing.

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, Barcelona midfielder Andreas Iniesta, Real Madrid’s Isco and Manchester City’s David Silva are also in the squad.

I was 7 years old at the 98' World Cup. That was about my class as well. I was a precocious chap. Followed Nigeria match all through the World Cup. I stumbled upon Brazil playing one day in the group stage. Beautiful football I was attracted to. I immediately sat down that to enjoy a high scoring side, free flowing football that mesmerized my bubbling heart. I'd watch delima Ronaldo display his skills and run on to the Sandy field at oshodi to display my skills with my age groups. Sadly I was 7 no one around me at that point like an age mate to discuss this with. All I did was yearn to listen to adults talk football. At Korea Japan I was in kings college Lagos then. I'd leave the class room to the house masters window to peep and watch the beautiful game. At that point I was a master of the game amongst my colleagues. Wider football knowledge and was barely matched in football and sports by any colleague. My academics performance dwindled, my mum was so worried she needed take drastic actions, hence, she would beat me if I played football let alone watch football. I struggled with this as I just loved the game. This really killed my intense interest in the game.

Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Alloy Agu, insists the four goalkeepers in the team’s 30-man provisional squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will get equal opportunity to prove their worth, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The quartet of Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi, Francis Uzoho and Dele Ajiboye will vie for the three slots reserved for goalkeepers in the final 23-man squad.

Ezenwa, Uzoho and Akpeyi were called up for the team’s last four games against Algeria, Argentina, Poland and Serbia.

Ajiboye, who was outstanding for Plateau United in their title success in the Nigeria Professional Football League last season, was also part of the team in some of the qualifying games.

He is seen by many as having little chance of making the final squad to Russia having been overlooked by handler of the side, Gernot Rohr in recent times.

But Alloy, who was part of the Super Eagles squad in Nigeria’s debut in the FIFA World Cup at the USA 1994 said the selection will be done fair and square.

“Everything will be done on merit. We are lucky to have these quality goalkeepers in the team at the moment and we will give them equal chance to show what they can do,” Alloy told CSN.

“I don’t support the view that there is a favourite among the four or that we already know the three that will go with the team to Russia.

“I know they all want to be in Russia which will make them give their all in training. That itself is good for the team as it will give us the opportunity to pick the best for the team.”
