A first class Yoruba traditional ruler in Osun State, the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has shown that he's truly a Nigerian after rocking attire worn by Igbo rulers in order to promote unity in the country. The monarch sparked controversy some months ago after dropping his traditional dresses and adopted full regalia of an Hausa emir.

The traditional ruler said Iwo was the home of Islamic scholars and that he could be regarded as an emir.

The Oluwo said he wore the Igwe dress to demonstrate his unrepentant insistence on oneness of Nigeria as a father to the nation as he urged other Obas need to adopt the system to promote unity.

He was quoted as saying the below statements at the event;

I'm wearing Igwe dress to demonstrate my unrepentant insistence on oneness of Nigeria as a father to the nation. Nigerians should integrate through occasional multi ethnic dresses. Other Obas need to adopt the system to promote unity.

"The adopted state of origin is a threat to our unity. Nigerians should be Nigerians in Nigeria. The certificate is divisive. As a Nigerian, you should be able to contest for elective positions anywhere in Nigeria. Ethnicity didn't permit this. Traditional rulers have role to play. I'm leading this and will continue to"

“Palace is a rally point and general place for every Nigerian. It jumps political, religious, ethnic and economic barrier. Everyone, irrespective of your location should be able to approach any palace and make your request. Palace belongs to Nigerians not certain ethnic class”

“Unlike Mosque and Church where Muslims and Christians have respective exclusive access to, palace should accommodate everyone whether you are Muslim or Christian, Yoruba, Hausa.

The Oluwo is not new to controversy and once admitted that people see him that way “because I challenge the status quo”.

Dear Oba, as much as we appreciate your good gesture towards ethnic integration and cultural maturity, we think Nigeria is not ripe for such.

We therefore appeal to you to keep your identity to your people and stop mixing Igbos with your cultural values.

It won't be long now, you will start hearing stories of Igbos wanting to usurp Iwo kingship and the usual hate will start, Igbos has been victimised, beaten and lost goods and properties before in your region for doing nothing.

We love you but please continue wearing your local traditional attires, even if you like to dress like Emirs, it does not concern Igbos.

needless submission. You tribalists behave like God...but you need to know that nobody decided where he or she was born. Based on this, I have learnt to respect those from other tribes and nationalities. Imagine, the materials, sowing machines and even threads used to make these clothes you are angrily claiming are not even from Africa at all. I am sure YOU have things from other countries in your house, I am sure you have beyond your tribal clothes in your wardrobe...even the phone you used to type this meaningless protest was not manufactured in or within your tribe. Many of our Igbo brethren are busy making money far away from their lands...and nothing is wrong with that. Please...for once, learn to be a human. You are one of the problems of humanity.
