President Muhammadu Buhari had his Democracy Day address to Nigerians today and he kept his biggest announcement for last and made it in a rather bland manner.

The President said: “In few days to come, I will be joined by many promising young Nigerians to sign into law the “Not Too Young to Run” Bill.

Nonetheless, this will change the face of politics in Nigeria as it makes active participation in actual governance more open to the youths who make a sizeable proportion of the population.

Once assented to thereby becoming an Act, this new piece of legislation will ensure changes to some parts of Nigeria’s election provisions.

The effect of the bill in terms of age qualifications for elective offices are:

The age requirement for President is reduced from 40 to 30 years, that of Governor is reduced from 35 to 30 years and Senate is reduced from 35 to 30 years.

Meanwhile, the minimum age qualification for a seat in the House of Representatives and State Assemblies is reduced from 30 to 25 years.

This means we might see a lot of younger people holding public office in Nigeria from 2019 when the next general elections will be held.

A great one all round for everyone.

However, the efficiency with which this "Not Too Young to Run" campaign was run raises suspicion that it might have had foreign backing.

See this to have an idea

Easy On Paper; Difficult In Practice

When People (Retiring Governors) Like A. Ajimobi Are Seeking Elections Into The Senate

Meanwhile, I Won't Be Surprised To Hear PMB Use This As A Campaign Point Later In The Year. Something In Line Of "Our Administration Is Pro-youth As Evidenced By Speedy Passage & Signing Of Not Too Young To Run Bill"

I don't belief in that bill because there is no any effect it will have in the life of common people. The bill will only serve the rich.

Sometimes allowing young people to rule scares me a lot. They take some drastic decisions due to inexperience, the one we have here just legalized marijuana which can be purchased over the counter. By this act, overtime you will increase the numbers of mentally deranged people which pose a serious treat to the society.

Good!

My fear however is that the old are not ready to leave. How do Youths with just a few millions in the bank contest with these greedy pot belly old men? Even fellow youths will collect money from the old men and vote for them

How many of the minimum age did we have in those positions before now? A 35year old Senator was not bad but we had old cargos throwing seats and stealing mace there.

Meanwhile, these so called Youths are even more greedy. Future leaders of this country are worse than present leaders.

God bless Nigeria!

cry by the time those who had swallowed billions shall field their 'kids' then we shall not know that this bill is not a channel of joy to the poor masses at all. Then we shall know that a man who cannot pay for a single room, but is busy struggling to get a contract to build a stadium is just displaying an ecumenical insanity. Behold, Ibori Junior...Tinubu Junior...Odili Junior...they are getting set.

Very stupid bill

how many 40 yer old have ever signed up for presidency,35 for Governors and the house, you've not had representation within that bracket and you are now reducing to 25yrs.

Very simple watch the decadence begin as politicians sponsor their wards into power where they can manipulate them for selfish purposes, just vote or do what xx tells you.Or yahoo boys buying the highest ticket to buy immunity or vaidity to back their lack of real job experience

What young person wants to address babangid or objs yawa,it's like the rumour then of adedibu ordering the then governor of oyo to bring 14m of his security vote monthly saying he was the security of ibadan, the governor refused and he got impeached

This stupid bill that puts post NYSC with no administrative experience will further weaken our country, it will make us prey to foreign manipulation for cheap. My recommendation, A proportion of representation for the house for every party must be women and youths the senate, house or corridors of the exexutive must not be lined with Nigerian youths,

Even scriptures note that woe to the land whoose king is a child
Perhaps we should start a new campaign its not just too young to run,but too weak to rule

This is very apt. I can totally hear his voice saying those words, awkwardly pausing between syllables and adjusting his glasses while reading it out of a paper in monotone.

Many of them already have their children in politics, however on the flip side you can see it is a win win situation for the old politicians even if their own kids are not involved.

This is a divide and conquer tactic and it is an age old tactic well known since time began.

Imagine youths with no capital nor influence running for elections while the old and wealthy are the ones with all the money to sponsor electoral malpractice and campaigns. More young people would contest for positions and therefore make it more difficult for any of them(youths) to win. The youths wont get any significant votes, because their votes would be divided among the youth populace. While the older ones who have amassed wealth go into the villages to pay starving people for votes that the young runners can not afford.

In order to win as a youth therefore, these same old politicians who would be clocking about 90years at the time, would have to sponsor you as Godfathers, of course on their own terms.

MY POINT EXACTLY! LET'S INTRODUCE MAXIMUM AGE INTO POLITICS TO SANITIZE OUR DEMOCRACY!!!

MAX AGE FOR PRESIDENCY AND SENATE SHOULD BE 55.

ANYONE OVER THAT SHOULD RETIRE AND BECOME AN ELDER OR A KINGMAKER
