My Good people of Nairaland, this thread is aimed at discussing about experiences with all kinds of Daimler Chrysler (Mercedes Benz) vehicles,  with special reference to sedans, coupes, wagons and its likes,  feel free to comment on any one's contribution and suggestion,

You can proffer solutions here as well,  as a start, here's mine,

Yea as promised last time, my new experience on Mercedes Benz c-class is really awesome,  the car is so robust and heavy, it gives u a sense of confidence,  I got the ride on this Nairaland, and was lucky to be d first person to change the shocks and bushings, etc and perhaps even tyre,

its a nice ride- 1996 model, I presume it still has enough to give me, I had the opportunity to open the valves quite well this morning, immediately after sanitation,  damn! it moved, see me see BMW and camry dey do competition for road, b4 you know it, speedo don dey near 140km/hr,  while the ride was just telling me ,  "IS THAT ALL YOU CAN GIVE?", lol

I am planning to change the transmission oil next weekend,  its automatic, ,

pls advice, if you have any with rgds to this change,

fuel consumption with 2000 camry is same if not better ,  ,  I sometimes imagine say "so na wetin I dey miss since be dis?, lol

My camry even though newer, has been taken over by madam, but as she parked the car in the compound this morning she confessed she liked the handling,  I think I might stop her from using it even though it was actually meant for her,  lol cheesy cheesy

Nice topic.

So far, how would you rate the overall performance (handling, drive, braking comfort etc) with that of a Japmobile?

What engine type is your car, as in size, cylinder configuration? It may be a Mercedes Benz, but I still believe Audi has taken the reins from the three-pointed star.  Not many Mercedes came with AWD, unless you stepped up to an SUV. BMW still offer AWD in the 325 / 328 / 330 / 525 / 528 / 530i models, though mostly limited to Tourere. All Audi models, bar the A2, are available as AWD (Quattro).

I'd love to see your C-class perform against an Audi A4 Quattro in the wet, hehehe!

Siena, its a M111, 4-cylinder, I am new with this O, so pardon me if I use any wrong term, but its nice, since I bought it, I have not driven the camry for over a month,

The Camry now feels lighter,

@ Audi, well, I've not tried that out, I wont be suprised if they are same, these German people I think they build to last and reliable!,

Maybe someone can help me here.

My Mercedes Benz CLS 500 2006 has a fault. When you power the radio system up, it just flashes the Benz logo and shuts itself off again - no sound, no display - nothing. It was working well until i made a mistake of trying to add a woofer and external amplifier to it, obviously, the technician made a wrong move and something just blew up and he cant trace it since. Someone suggests it is the in built amp that is gone bad- but not sure if this is right. Anyone has any suggestions?
Re: Mercedes Benz Thread by Nobody: 4:49pm On Sep 25, 2010
@Labiyemmy: Long time bro, how's the Navi business doing?  smiley

As per your head unit. I'd say yes, very likely your tech has blown the final output stage of your Mercedes head unit, or the rear amplifier. The rear amplifier is built by Bose, and as it's a factory-fit option, just like that used by Audi, to power an external sub, means it's not straight forward, as would be the case with an aftermarket system. There is an aftermarket harness / adapter from www.kufatec.de that simplifies the installation.

Though, before condemning the system, have the unit interrogated via the OBD port. You need to go into Comfort / Convenience mode, it's very possible you can reset the output stage, if it's not blown, and merely shut-down. I'd say it's blown though. Let's know how you get on.

Hi Siena,

Thanks for your input - yeah - all is well with the Sat Nav and business in general.

Your knowledge and mastery of these machines simply wows me. - you are exactly right about the rear amplifier- the guy was trying to take power from the units at the rear when the outage occurred.

The problem is that the car is down in Abuja, I am in London presently but will be in Abj sometimes mid October- I will want to try out what you have suggested, but, honestly, I don't know what the OBD port is, neither do i know how to go to those modes to reset the output stage - any manuals you can recommend, to give to the technicians?

I don't mind buying another rear amp, if all fails - can you suggest where to buy - I have the mind of going to Mercedes Benz repair unit/part sales but I am sure they will cost much more than any other source.

Where else can you suggest to buy? -

Lomzy, whilst I appreciate your car (very clean, may I add) this isn't a sales thread. You're best off starting a new thread.

Best of luck in your sale.
Re: Mercedes Benz Thread by Nobody: 5:09pm On Sep 25, 2010
Alabi, since you're here in the UK, I'd suggest you get a good used unit off eBay, as it's almost certain the output stage is blown. If it were here, I could replace the circuitry. If buying used, make sure the seller has the security code, otherwise you'll be stuck!

Best of luck.

I think the topic heading will limit your sales potential, as it's not really a sales topic. Best if you opened a fresh thread, to ensure your advert gets maximum exposure.

Thanks Oga Kunle, its really nice we have a thread as this to discuss issues relating to the cars perhaps we must have bought via the same nairaland. I expect to see threads as HONDA, TOYOTA, AUDI , BMW etc,

Thanks. I personally don't drive a Benz, so I 'ave no testimonies.

Hi Guys,

Thoughts on the ML 2006 onwards model, brother wants to get one in abuja, so specific questions are:

How robust are they
Who can be trusted to look after one in Abuja without breaking the bank, bearing in mind that I can buy parts in the UK and send down to him.

@Kuntash

Is your C-class from the US or Europe and how has the sourcing of parts been like ?

@All

I will be getting a 2003/2004 C320 soon though I was planning to bring it from the US, I'm having a rethink as the technicians I have talked to claim the parts for the American 'spec' are not readily available in Nigeria that I would be better off with the European version. Is this info correct ?

Thanks

Nice thread

I have been fortunate to drive 3 good 190's from 2001 till date,

All direct from Stuttgart Germany and i can gladly inform any one of Y'all here

That no one can match the speed of my 190 wiv any other benz product here,

why do y'all think im bear the name 190 cos of its uniqueness, bulit and turgidity which i love most

Im also into C-Classes and B-Class (although it looks too weak for my likin) but im not a Big fan of the V-Boot,A-Class and e-class

I am a specialist in benz products and fortunately some fews jeeps and a yaris, I have never driven any car not even a camry except a

benz

NEXT UP FOR ME IS THIS CAR HERE,

I have always been a fan of european cars- i drove my Dad's Peugeot 505, then his 230E Benz 'flatboot' (w123)-Back in the days!
The Benz was always a winner, and the handling of the 230E, even after all thes years is still awesome!
I currently drive a peugeot 306 (fair handling-a lot better than  most japmobiles of the same era), but am thinking of getting myself a 1995 Mercedes Benz w124 e220  aka 'V-Boot' (Facelifted model).
I am now the butt of all my friends jokes as they say I'm going old skul and that I should get something newer!
But I WILL go ahead and get the Benz for now!
When money come, we go buy more recent ones!!
Benz all the way!!
BTW, pls Siena et al, do you know anything about the running costs and fuel efficiency of the W124 e220?

Mine its from Germany, and quite old compared to the one you are thinking of bringing in, as I said in my first post, the suspension and tyres were the only things I have done so far, and I sourced them from Ladipo market, toks, lol

Mechanics are they and they would fix it for you,

in my model, I have noticed that what is expensive are things like the front bumpers, some relays like the AC relay, trafficator pointers, , but generally, I think its fair, shocks, discs, etc are very cheap, compared to camry of same yr.

suffice it to add again, I zoomed thru 3rd mainland bridge late ysterday, and the confidence on the car just keeps improving, lol grin grin

Both W202 / 203 are C-Class.

W202: C-Class 1993 - 2000.

The Mercedes-Benz W124 is regarded today as one of the best Merc ever built. I tend to agree - it was one of the last non-budget, money-no-object models built. Production ran from 1984 - 1995. The engines were tough, and built to last. It was the big sister of the W201 (190), itself a virtually indestructible model (Mr 190, take note).

You shouldn't have any issues with the W124, as long as you avoid the carburettor versions of early, pre-facelift 2,0 8V models (200). The carburettors, either Stromberg or Pierburg are costly to overhaul. Compared to the fuel-injected model (200E) with the same engine size, they're also thirsty.

Strangely, rust can be a problem, but only on post-facelift models (1993-1995). Rust usually attacked the rear wheel arches, fuel filler flap surround, around the side repeaters in the front wings, around the trunk release / lock, where the front bumper corners met the wings and the cavity between the windshields and the roof. There were also a few reported sunroof leaks due to corrosion within the channels.

Pre-facelift models (1985-1993) didn't suffer from rust, coming from an era where no expense was spared in their build, and the steel used was better quality, as well as being fully galvanised and wax was injected into all cavities.

Pre-facelift models differed from later post-facelift versions in terms of their badge designation. Examples below;

Pre-facelift: 200E,  Post-facelift: E200.
Pre-facelift: 230E,  Post-facelift: E220.
Pre-facelift: 260E,  Post-facelift: E260.
Pre-facelift: 300E,  Post-facelift: E320.

My fuel consumption statistics so far,

9 days ago , I filled my tank to the brim and reset my odometer @ the spot to zero.

used the car for usual "go to office and back' (city driving only)

yesterday evening, I decided to refill my tank after 151miles/243km ,

again I filled to the brim @ same filling station, which rounded up @ N1800 even though some poured out after no more space in the tank. totaling 27.7litres.

now lets do small Arithmetic, according to statistics on www dot fueleconomy dot gov URL,

they say the car can do 21miles with 1gallon of fuel which is 33.8km for 3.78litres of fuel. for city driving.

in my case I did, 151miles with 7.3gallons = 243km with 27.5litres

therefore 7.3 x 21 = 153.3miles , which is not far from what my benz did (151miles)

I was really impressed with this calculation, I am sure many cars used in lagos hardly meet these settings owing to high traffic.

suffice it to say that I have not arrived at my style of getting car best tuned up to conserve fuel and to be more efficient,

I think I have really missed using this Benz technology thinking Japanese are the all n all in fuel conservation,

WHAT IS YOUR FUEL CONSUMPTION ON URBAN DRIVING?

As to fuel consumption - I will go with Mercedes.

I also have a BMW 645ci - German made and in terms of fuel - the Benz CLS 500 saves the most fuel.
Re: Mercedes Benz Thread by kuntash: 2:25pm On Sep 27, 2010
In Nigeria, I think its the way the old mercedes ,(i.e likes of V-Booth and predecessor of the C-Class (190) were consuming fuel was responsible for discouraging many people. ,

so when u talk of mercedes, the first thing to would come to people's mind is , it consumes fuel, including me, like 4yrs back.

I was suprised when I saw the C-class mpg some 4yrs ago, for the price, I would have gone for it then, it was 1.7m, while camry was b/w1.2 - 1.5m, tongue,

@ Kuntash,
one of the first cars i used was a mercedes benz 200 flat boot and i liked it but after i used a v-boot the experience was very bad especially with a bad mechanic ,i decided to go face japanese. But generally,i like mercedes benz because of the suspension and the balance which cannot be compared with asian cars. Although i use a Kia jeep as an official car at the moment,i will always go for european rides any day for personal ride. I can still remember when i used to travel to ABJ with the v-boot,even at 180km/hr,the car is fully balanced compared to asian toys. I am planning to buy a car soon and with what kuntash is saying,i may have a rethink about my option. Thanks a lot for this thread, keep it up

@Siena
Could you give more updates on audis,i used an Audi A6 (2000 model) 2 years ago for just three months, and i must confess that the car is one of the best rides i have seen. Recently i had an offer for nigerian used A6 (2001 model),i am still thinking about it though. Can you advice someone to go for the car ? What are the drawbacks of the car? Thanks
