Lagos state output in 2017 was $136bn, according
to official estimates, more than a third of Nigeria’s
gross domestic product. The city is the centre of
most of the country’s manufacturing and home to a
pan-African banking industry as well as a thriving
music, fashion and film scene that reverberates
around the continent. More recently, it has become
a tech hub to rival Nairobi’s so-called Silicon
Savannah.
The Lagos economy is significantly bigger than that
of the whole of Kenya, east Africa’s most dynamic
country
, with a nominal per capita income of more
than $5,000, more than double the Nigerian
average.

Now I can see you are confused. Shopping malls is infrastructure while shopping online most of the savers are not even based in nigeria. Nigerians do not go to malls or banks because it is not safe.

What the hell do you mean by to savers are not based in Nigeria?
Most of the products available in Nigerian online markets are from Nigeria.

Toni Kan, a writer and entrepreneur who styles himself as “the Mayor of Lagos”, agrees his adopted hometown has made huge strides. The paved road network, including some world-class toll roads, has expanded significantly,he says, and the city’s once notorious gridlock has eased, although critics complain that the biggest improvements have come in wealthy neighbourhoods. Old yellow buses are being phased out and a more integrated transit system adopted. Culturally, says Mr Kan, Lagos is unrecognisable from even a decade ago. Restaurants and music clubs are flourishing. Artists and musicians perform in thriving public spaces such as Freedom Park.

The Forbes top 2000 companies in the world.China and the US dominated this segment.

In Africa,SA leads the park, Nigeria comes second with with two companies then Kenya with only one company.

South African companies in the list are;

1.Standard Bank
2.First Rand
3.Sasol
4.Naspers
5.Sanlam
6.MTN Group
7.Shoprite Holdings
8.MMI Holdings
9.Remgro
10.RBM Holdings
11.Bid Corp

The Nigerian companies are Dangote Cement and Zenith Bank. The only Kenyan company featured was Safaricom with an estimated market valuation of 11.1 billion US dollars.

Who is the real giant of Africa? Us Kenyans with only a paltry 88billion dollars GDP could at least get recognition with Safaricom which only operates in Kenya and it's profits coming only from Kenyans.

I really expected Nigeria to go neck to neck with SA but wow!they disappointed! I still think that SA is miles above Nigeria.SA is more richer than Nigeria and that's a fact.

400 billion plus GDP? Really?

Pls explain this cultism thing! I've seen crime cults and uni cults mentioned here and I shuddered! Omfg, the demonic poo they do. What was their original cultural role if any? In the old days were they always involved in crime or is that recent? I'VE NEVER HEARD OF ANYTHING SIMILAR ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
Pls expound, sir cause cultism defines Dangotelands social structure.

To tell you the truth about cultist is most of these people are bloody lazy even when they go to other countries they do the same. All they do is rob people and commit all sorts of horrible crimes all in the name of laziness. Nigeria and crime started a long time ago that is why we kicked all the industries and companies out of nigeria so we can become criminals

And again Kenya lead by far in terms of internet speed....we have internet speeds as good as Isreal & developed world.

We have invested massively in fiber...making sure there is real broadband all over.

Use your brain!
97 million out of 185 million Nigerians are active internet subscribers.
That's 52% of the population and 44% of Africa's internet subscribing population, since Africa only has 216 million internet subscribers.

Lagos is the worst city to be a driver in Africa, says Forbes

With 60 percent road traffic congestion and 10.70 meters per hour average driving speed, Lagos State is worst city to be a driver in Africa and the third worst in the world, according to a report by Forbes magazine.

According to the report, only Karachi, Pakistan and Kolkata, India, ranked higher than Lagos which is the only African city out of 100 cities of the world that were considered in the ratings

Dusseldorf, Germany came first as the best city for drivers, with 20 percent congestion, and 21.20mph average speed.

The criteria used to arrive at the report include: an analysis of local congestion levels, an average cost of parking and fuel, average roadway speeds, air pollution levels, number of traffic injuries, and road quality. Also considered is the frequency and perception of road rage.

Other cities included in the worst categories are: Ulaanbaatar – Mongolia; Mumbai – India; Bangalore – India; Ho Chin Minh City – Vietnam; Bogota – Colombia; Mexico city – Mexico and Istanbul – Turkey.

While the best cities to be a driver include: Dusseldorf – Germany; Dubai – UAE; Tokyo – Japan; Basel – Switzerland; Singapore – Singapore, Dortmund – Germany; Vienna – Austria; Munich – Germany and Calgary – Canada.

In May this year, Akinwumi Ambode, the Lagos State Governor, assure residents in the State that his administration will tackle the perennial issue of traffic congestion head on.

What trouble? You also have the highest numbers of people without internet (technically in the dark ages)

And I need not mention our internet speed.

Jack Ma was in Kenya and the first thing he said on Live TV was how shocked he was when he browsed. He thought his browser was probably insane because of the speed. In the USA, the only place with faster internet than Kenya is NASA.

Only about 87 million Nigerians are not active internet subscribers out of 1 billion Africans who are not.. That's about 8.7%.... Meanwhile we are 15% of the continent's population...

Nairobi has fast internet, what about Garissa,Turkana and other parts of northern kenya? Do they have such? or any internet at all?

All Nigerian cities have access to 4G network, while 3G is available almost everywhere.

The Economist: After Damascus, Lagos is the worst global city to live in

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister publication of The Economist of London, says Lagos, is the worst global city to live anywhere in the world — after Damascus in war-torn Syria.

According to its 2017 liveability report, which considers 140 major cities, Melbourne in Australia retained its crown as the best city to live anywhere in the world, for seven years running.

Vienna, Austria, where the headquarters of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is located, comes in as the second most liveable city in the world.

Vienna is closely followed by Canadian cities, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary at the third, fourth and fifth spots respectively. Calgary, however, ties with Australian city, Adelaide.

EIU considers stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure, in determining the liveability of cities across the globe. The unit blamed terrorism for the fall in the standing of Lagos, Nigeria.

“Terrorism has also been compounded by unrest and, in more extreme cases, civil war in some countries. Iraq, Libya, Syria and Turkey remain the subject of high-profile civil unrest and armed conflicts, while a number of other countries, such as Nigeria, continue to battle insurgent groups,” the report read.

“Of the more poorly scoring cities, 12 continue to occupy the very bottom tier of liveability, where ratings fall below 50% and most aspects of living are severely restricted.

“Continued threat from groups such as Boko Haram acts as a constraint to improving stability in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city.”

According to the rating, Tripoli in Libya is a better city to live in than Lagos, Nigeria.

Manchester in the UK had the highest drop for the year, after a terror attack killed 22 people at the Ariana Grande concert in the city back in May 2017.

The 27 cities with the worst quality of life in the world

Every year Mercer, one of the world's largest HR consultancy firms, releases its Quality of Living Index, which looks at the cities that provide the best quality of life.

Business Insider has already looked at the 23 cities with the best quality of life.

Now we take a look at what cities are ranked as providing the worst quality of life.

The ranking is one of the most comprehensive of its kind and is carried out annually to help multinational companies and other employers to compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments, according to Mercer.

Looking at 450 cities across the world, Mercer takes into account the following metrics to judge which cities made the list for the best quality of life — which therefore shows what it feels are the best and worst:

Political and social environment (political stability, crime, law enforcement)
Economic environment (currency-exchange regulations, banking services)
Socio-cultural environment (media availability and censorship, limitations on personal freedom)
Medical and health considerations (medical supplies and services, infectious diseases, sewage, waste disposal, air pollution)
Schools and education (standards and availability of international schools)
Public services and transportation (electricity, water, public transportation, traffic congestion)
Recreation (restaurants, theatres, cinemas, sports and leisure)
Consumer goods (availability of food/daily consumption items, cars)
Housing (rental housing, household appliances, furniture, maintenance services)
Natural environment (climate, record of natural disasters)

Mercer made a list of 230 countries and Business Insider took a look at the bottom 27 in the world.

27. Tashkent, Uzbekistan — The capital in the central Asia country has changed economically, culturally, and architecturally since 1991, but poor air quality is seen as a big issue for the city.

26. Lome, Togo — The city is the largest in Togo and holds high unemployment rates. Its infrastructure is also deteriorating and the African nation faces problems with living conditions and rubbish collection.

25. Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan — Poverty is high in the economic centre of the country.

24. Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire — It is the economic capital of the Ivory Coast but the British embassy has issued warnings against anyone travelling there unless essential. It said "violent crime can occur at any time" and that the city, and the country, has a "high threat of terrorism."
[5515236.jpg]
(Alamy)

23. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia —The capital city is going through a building boom but many of its citizens are suffering from extreme poverty.

22. Harare, Zimbabwe — The capital, as well as the rest of the country, suffers from an oppressive government led by Robert Mugabe. The city is also poverty stricken and millions of citizens are starving due to a majority of maize crops failing.

21. Ashgabat, Turkmenistan — The city is largely controlled by the government, mainly through a large percentage of employment coming from state-owned enterprises. Unfortunately, the city suffers from chronic water shortages due to state mismanagement, which is crippling for citizens where temperatures soared as high as 47.2 degrees Celsius (116.96 F) in 2015.
[5-Ashgabat-AP.jpg]
(AP)

20. Lagos, Nigeria — The country's largest city battles environmental threats, such as riptides, annually. Citizens are also under continual threats to their personal safety, including the kidnapping of students and murder.

19. Abuja, Nigeria — The city, like Lagos, suffers from high crime rates from inter-communal violence. The British Foreign Office tells travellers: "You could get kidnapped or find yourself caught up in a terrorist or other violent incident."

18. Dhaka, Bangladesh — Dhaka is one of the world's most populated cities and its garment exports bolsters its economy. But working conditions and human rights, as well as local poverty for a bulk of its citizens, are criticised and under scrutiny by world governments and charities.
[dhaka.jpg]
(Reuters)

17. Dushanbe, Tajikistan — Poverty and energy shortages are a huge issue for the city and country as a whole. The World Bank also warns that doing business there is difficult due to the inadequate infrastructure.

16. Antananarivo, Madagascar — The city, and the rest of the country, depends on agriculture for its economic growth. However, political instability hinders any chance of continuous development.

15. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — The city is under continued threat of terrorist attacks and, earlier in 2016, Al-Qaeda bombed a popular hotel, killing 29 people.

14. Tripoli, Libya — The city was carved up by two rival warlords in 2015. Even the main airport was destroyed in the summer of that year and all the main embassies were closed down. Migrants and refugees are also flooding into the country due to its proximity with Europe.

13. Niamey, Niger — Protests, governmental corruption, and local poverty place this city onto the list.

12. Bamako, Mali — The city is experiencing rapid population growth which is causing increased poverty problems.

11. Nouakchott, Mauritania — The city was originally a small village of little importance until 1958 until growing rapidly into one of the biggest cities in the Sahara. However, overcrowding, droughts, and poverty have helped fill the city with slums.

10. Conakry, Guinea Republic — The port city is riddled with personal safety issues. Violent crime, protests, and strikes wreak havoc in Conakry.

9. Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo — Ethnic nationalist conflict is rife in the city and NGOs have tried to step in to provide aid and food relief to the city and the rest of the country.
[KinshasaGettyImages-469560484.jpg]
(Photo: FEDERICO SCOPPA/AFP/Getty Images))

8. Brazzaville, Congo — Government corruption has triggered huge protests in the city which led to a number of people being killed by the police.

7. Damascus, Syria — Mercer says the city has "witnessed continual violence and terrorist attacks that weigh upon the daily life of locals and expatriates."

6. N'Djamena, Chad — The city in one of the world's poorest countries has suffered at the hands of militant Islamist group Boko Haram. The group carries out frequent suicide bombings in the city.

5. Khartoum, Sudan — It is the second largest city in Sudan and is a key recruiting ground for ISIS.
[464538.bin]

(GETTY)

4. Port Au Prince, Haiti — The city is rife with violent crime and is dangerous for travellers. Rapes and robberies are common and there is a worrying growth in vigilante violence.

3. Sana'a, Yemen — The largest city in Yemen has been devastated by airstrikes from Saudi Arabia as the country has become a battleground in the proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

2. Bangui, Central African Republic — The capital city is incredibly poor and many citizens rely on aid for survival. On top of that, violent sectarian clashes erupt regularly in the area.

1. Baghdad, Iraq — The capital city has suffered severe infrastructural damage from several wars and continual on the ground violence. It continues to face threats from ISIS.

So if you look at it it seems that lagos is lost in everything in africa and in the world .so I will now tell you where did gdp is coming from.
1 importation
2 borrowing money
3 capital flights will people running away from the country.
4 fuel on generators

So you can see the gdp is big most of that gdp is used in running away from the country or building houses in other countries

Dude, fiber optic cables are in ALL counties of Kenya, even as far as Garissa and Turkana. They all have fiber optic cables. See the breakdown of which fiber lines pass where in map below. You can go to the site http://icta.go.ke/nofbi-transmission-network/ to zoom in and look for your favorite town Garissa.

Everywhere in Kenya there is fiber optic cables transmitting on average at the very minimum 13.7 megabits per second, twice as fast as the global average. Thousands and thousands of kilometers of fiber optic cables and this was done almost a decade ago.

Not just that, these days, the Kenya Power Co. (your nepa equivalent) is laying fiber optic cables on all new power transmission lines. Dude! Its called fibre-to-the-home services and is done via optical fiber cabling. Basically, the fibre optic cables are strung between the tops of all new high-voltage transmission lines combining the functions of grounding and communications. The Fibre optic cables are based on Optical POPGW cableilot Ground Wire (OPGW), with 48 optical fibres or cores. And the firm hopes to have this in all its power lines across the country.

That helps not just in connecting more Kenyans to high speed broadband internet but will also be a revenue to them but most importantly, will ensure that they can gather information about their power transmission systems, such as which transmission lines are in service, the amount of power being carried, meter reading at interchange points, and status of equipment and alarms all in real time. Your Nepa will need a century to achieve this kind of vision and efficiency.
