European universities write their exams in May and go on summer holiday until September when the year starts. At least thats how it works as far as this country is concerned. Plus FYI some schools have january/february intakes.

This depends on what they call thesis. Some people use the term interchangeably to refer to projects, papers, essays and so on - it is a present day misnomer. But if thesis is being used as thesis in the very essence of the word, then I disagree with your explanation. I mean disagree totally.

What I have observed academically in some UK and to some degree Australian schools is that they have some “coursework” PhDs which is basically like an undergrad degree.
