A SHORT STORY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

As an 'okada man, it was becoming fun for me, roaming the streets of Adamgbe town on my new bajaj motorcycle 'picking and dropping' passengers.
Re: The Bank Robbery. by Fmartin(m): 12:59pm On May 23, 2018
On a cool Friday morning after i had had much 'picks and drops', i stopped by mama Doosen's road side food joint to replenish my already shrank tommy.

I parked my bike and headed into the hut.

The hut was constructed with logs of wood and roofed with bamboo poles and spear grass.

Mama Doosen was a guru in preparing delicacies.

One could hardly passed-by her hut without stopping for a plate of food by the mere inhalation of the aroma that hovered in the surroundings.

Haven settled, i ordered for a plate of boiled rice and beans. I devoured my meal and ordered for an additional plate. After clearing the second plate, i took a chilled bottle of soft drink to cool my already sweating body.
My stomach was as if inflated by a vulcanizer.

I reached my pocket for some dough and settled the bills.

I had to go to the bank to withdraw some cash because i was going to travel in the evening.

so, i started strolling to the bank since it was not far from mama Doosen's hut.

I was approaching the bank when i heard heavy gun shots.

People began to run away from the scene.
'shiit! Its bank robbery' i said to myself.
I was terrified, hearing the sound of guns for the first time in real life. I had never witnessed a bank robbery before except in movies.

'vooom!' a stray bullet flew over my head.

'jeez!' i froze with fear. I was greaful with my 4ft 5 inches height for the first time in my life.

I crawled liked a lizard into an abandoned kiosk that stood before me to shield myself.

I lay on my distended tommy with my toes partly touching the ground.

I peeped through a hole watching what was happening out there. I saw police vans whizzing down the then empty road. heavily armed mobile police officers alighted from the vans, taking cover behind parked vehicles.

There were heavy gun shots now, with stray bullets crashing into nearby parked vehicles, streets light poles, buildings and even people.

'Get down! You! Get down' police officers yelled at the civilians.

The armed robbers were now trying to escape as the police were gaining more reinforcement.

I caught the sight of a pair of moving boots from where i was hiding. It was one of the robbers on the run.

My heart started to beat faster than before as the man staggered towards the kiosk.

He stopped, glance around and threw a bag into the kiosk and ran away.
I crawled slowly like a crocodile and reached for the bag. As i opened it, stock piles of one thousand naira notes smiled at me. I started sweating profusely, even though, the weather was not hot.

I had never seen such a huge amount of money before. I started shivering anxious.

The gun shots subsided shortly. Two of there bank robbers were down while others escaped with gun inflicted wounds.

I lay still in the kiosk with the bag full of cash, contemplating on what could be my next move.
''this money will turn my suffering to happiness'' i started thinking.

'' no! Max you should surrender the money to the police'' another voice whispered in my mind.

Different opinions to stage in my mind as i kept thinking.
I made up my mind and decided

''I'll hand over the money to the police'' i concluded.
Re: The Bank Robbery. by Fmartin(m): 2:04pm On May 28, 2018
I grabbed the bag and headed out of the kiosk.

''good morning officers'' i approached a group of policemen.

I explained everything that happened and handed over the money to them. They were very pleased seeing the money.

'' you are a hero'' said a police officer.

''what's your name?'' another man asked.
'' I am Max'' i replied.

''ok Max, you will have to come with us to the station to put down your statement'' the senior officer said.
'' ok. '' i responded.

I got my bike and followed them to the police station.

We arrived at the Adamgbe police division after six minutes ride.

I walked in, feeling like a hero.
The policemen on the counter were looking at me as if i had done something wrong. The other one whispered something his counterpart and they shook their heads in disappointment.

I started writing down my testimony when a pot-belly man walked in like a woman is nine months pregnant.

''keep up with your good '' he tapped my shoulder.

''thank you sir'' i replied.

'' Don't hesitate to inform us if you notice any suspicious movement in your area. We need patriots like you to help us comb criminals out of our society''

The pot-belly man who was the DPO praised me.

He was talking as if he had food in his mouth.

''ok. Sir'' i replied. He shook me and left.

I also walked out as soon as i finished my testimony.

A police sergeant approached me as i was about to kick my bike.

'' Mr......?'' the police man stammered.

'' Max... '' i told him my name.

'' Max, you will remain an 'okada' man in your life. Opportunity comes but once, you had yours and you let it slipped'' the police sergeant said.

I began to regret my decision to Hand over the money to the police.

I felt like a fool. I kicked my bike and rode home.

At 8pm, i was in my room when i tuned in to city news channel on my hunch-back TV. I was shocked when the news caster pronounced that 20million naira was carted
away from the robbery at the National treasury bank.

The figure contradicted the
15million naira at the police station. We spent two hours to count the money which
we made sure there was no mistake.

'How come the figure inflated from 15million to 20million?' i thought.

'Is the bank manager behind the increase in the figure carted away from the bank? Or the robbers took way another bag full of money?' many question began to raise in my head.

While i was still thinking, i got a call from a private number.

'Max, I'm sure you keep our money safe? I knew you were in that kiosk that's why i threw in the money. I'm sure you must have heard the figures on city news channel. We are having a 3 days mourning of our colleagues who died. So,you have 3 days to start preparing our money. Address and time will be communicated to you on the third day. I'm sure you have traveled as
you planned? Stay out of trouble and keep our money safe. Don't even try to involve the police coz, we are watching you'. A huge
voice i could not recognise warned and cautioned me. The caller then hanged up.

I was quivering with my phone still placed on my ear. 'What have i gotten in to?' i asked
myself.

'wait a minute, the only person i told him i wanted to travel is my next door and neighbor and he has since travel yesterday. I
was even the one that rode him to the bus terminus'. I began to investigate.

I remembered the police asked me to call them when i noticed any move, but then the robbers had also giving me their orders.

'hmm! I'm confused now' i thought.
