Let's go back to me on my way back to the office after receiving my father in-law's call.


Finally, I got to the office looking scared, suspicious and curious, all at the same time. Not knowing where to go to nor what to expect, I started questioning the look on everyone's face at the office trying to find a clue from their facial expressions and body languages suggesting that they know something about anything that happened last weekend or whatever scheme I'm about to fall into. I read meanings into every greetings, smiles or frowns; I couldn't get anything from them, everything seemed normal. I figured it's either these people are good actors or they just didn't know anything.

Sometimes all it takes for an able bodied man like me to faint is just a bad news delivered with a few spoken words. I realized this when I had to calm my nerves and bring my breath back to normal. I was on the brink of unconsciousness. My limbs had gone numb and my heart was pounding fast and heavy, everywhere had gone dark and bright all within seconds. It took the help of a chair before I could bring myself back to the reality on ground – Jide and Mr. Patrick has just been indicted in a fraud not me!


While I was battling with my thought, the officers had already put handcuffs on the two suspects. Jide was proving to be a real nuisance, screaming at the top of his voice ‘no! What is this, what is this? I didn’t do anything! Oh oh, I swear to god, you will hear from my lawyers, this is just the beginning!’ I couldn’t bear to look him in the face. I was busy thanking God for my own safety. But Jide wasn’t done ranting ‘Ben! I know this is your hand work. You will pay for this; you will surely pay for this!’


The officers bundled the suspects out of the office with Abigail and my father in-law on their heels. Just as my father in-law was about leaving, he turned back and looked at me ‘Ben you are in charge for now, I won’t be back for a couple of days’. Then he left.
The other staffs were looking at me for answers that I don’t have. Their attention was on me. I looked up to them and said ‘alright everyone let’s get back to work, the meeting is over’. As they were making their way out, so was my father in-law’s secretary making her way in with a curious look on her face which suggested to me that whatever this is, it has been kept a top secret all the while the ‘investigation’ was going on, otherwise, his secretary would have known. I gave her a stern look and she went back just the way she came.


I sat in my father in-law’s office for what must have at least 30minutes, reminiscing on the events of the past one month. There must be something I’m missing. If I’m not missing anything, how do I explain all this? I was accused of impregnating my sister in-law yet here I am at their family firm as the man in charge. My wife wouldn’t let me come home, she can’t even stand my sight yet again here I am, being favored by her own father, even trusted enough to handle his biggest firm. ‘What am I missing?’ I thought to myself. Abigail lied and I guess my father in-law is in on the lie as well, so why won’t they just tell my wife so that all will be well in my marriage once again. I am dying to be in the arms of my wife again, to take Isabel for a swing at the back yard of our house, and to hold Caleb our son in my arms and look at his pretty innocent eyes; damn! I am dying to be home again!

It’s been a week now, yet no sign of Jide and Mr. Patrick in the office and neither did my father in-law show up too. Except for occasional calls from him inquiring about issues both past and present and asking about the general welfare of the firm, nothing else was being heard from my father in-law.


Reports reaching us from ‘Bush Radio FM’ suggests that the fraud was related to unremitted collection (transaction carried out and duly paid for but not remitted into the company’s account) spanning across a period of 13 months. That was all I heard and this was from the secretary’s conversation with one of the cleaners. So the authenticity of the story is not that strong.
I resumed work late on a Wednesday afternoon because I had to attend a seminar organized for NUPENG members. My secretary had called me earlier about a letter from a lawyer’s chamber which I asked her to sign and collect on my behalf.


I was just settling in my chair when I noticed a brown envelope on my table addressed to me. I picked it up and opened it. It was a divorce paper accompanied with a restraining order from my wife’s lawyer! She wants a divorce and she doesn’t want me anywhere near her or the kids!!


‘No!!!’ I screamed, clutching my chest which by now seems to be hurting pretty bad. Then I started soliloquizing (more or less like crying) ‘this cannot be. This is a nightmare and it has to stop now!’ This entire prank on me and my family has to stop now. Someone must say the truth’. There and then I decided it was time to pay my father in-law a visit. He has to tell me what he knows………………………………………………….

I stormed out of the office like a mad man with no directions; I could tell my face wasn’t the friendliest one as I could feel water gathering around my eyes. I avoided all eye contact while heading to the park to fetch my car with the divorce paper in my left hand.


I zoomed out of the company, heading straight to my father in-law’s house. I didn’t even bother to call him to find out if he was home; I demand answers and I’m sure I’ll get them once I get to his house.


Getting by his security was an easy one; I was already a familiar face. I headed straight to his living room. I found my daughter Isabella watching TV while sipping from a cup of what seems to be a juice. On setting eyes on me, she shouted ‘daddy!’ completely abandoning her drinks, she ran towards me and jumped into my open arms and I raised her up to my chest. I became very emotional at this point. All the tears I have been holding back just started pouring out freely and my chest was beginning to ache again. I hugged her more tightly while sobbing. She must have noticed this. She loosens her hold on me to look at my face only to see tears rolling down my cheek. ‘Daddy why are you crying’ she asked me, ‘nothing dear’ I replied as I dropped her to the floor, ‘is grandpa home?’ I inquired. ‘No daddy, grandpa went to the golf club with uncle Tunde’, I was about turning my back on her when she asked again ‘daddy, mummy said you won’t be coming home again, is it true?’ Prior to that question my anger had subsided a lot but the question brought everything back. I didn’t want Isabella to see this so I feigned a smile, squatted in front of her and said ‘look baby, daddy and mummy are just trying to settle an issue but Daddy will come home very soon ok?’ she nodded back and I stood up ‘tell grandma I came by, I will see you soon’ I hurriedly turned away from her as I could already feel tears were about to start rolling again. I drove out with a fiery rage hot enough to compete side by side with the fabled ‘hell fire’ and headed straight to the Oriental golf club where my father in-law usually hangs out with Tunde his right hand man. Tunde is more like his handy man. Whenever he wants anything to happen, Tunde makes it happen. Tunde was responsible for bringing my wife back home from where she once eloped with a guy named Nnamdi before we met. He tracked her down there and brought her back home. I don’t think my mother in-law knows half of the things Tunde knows, little wonder he is considered family in my father in-law’s household.


I got to the club, checked in with my membership card (it was the only way you can be allowed on the course when going alone) and located my father in-law who seemed to be having the time of his life with a club in his glove covered left hand and a bottle of energy drink in the other.
On sighting me from afar alighting from my cart he called out to me cheerfully ‘Ben my son!’ but I wasn’t in the mood for merriment. I approached him wearing my sternest look yet and stabbed the letter into his out stretched hand and without saying a word, I moved a step away from him towards his left hand side backing him. As he was opening the letter, he asked me ‘what is this?’ ‘I don’t know, maybe you can explain what is going on’ I fired back.


As soon as he finished reading the paper he burst into so much laughter! I couldn’t believe it. I had to turn to face him to confirm that his laughter wasn’t out of sarcasm but it wasn’t. He was genuinely laughing because he thinks it’s funny. He handed the letter to Tunde who glanced through it and also smiled devilishly. I couldn’t hold myself anymore, I had to say something before this people will dismiss my entire life with the back of their hands, so I began to pour my hearts out ‘sir, I beg of you, this is my life, this is everything that matters to me, my whole future and sanity depends on this……’ by now my tears were pouring out freely, the smile on my father in-law’s face has wiped out, replaced with a frantic look. I continued ‘if there is any way I have wronged you or anything I have done to provoke your anger, if not for my sake, please for the sake of my children and your daughter make all this go away! I can’t take this anymore! It’s not funny anymore,’ I was now clutching to my chest again which by now seems like someone was dragging some wires therein. I bent down a bit to get some comfort and I felt my father in-law’s hand patting me on the back. ‘It’s ok Ben……..it’s ok’ he told me. It seems I had finally reached his heart. I stood up erect looking at his face. He dropped his club to the floor and placed his left hand on my right shoulders, he said ‘Ben………are you aware that the fraud committed by Jide and Patrick was committed in your name?’
