‘'Please, show mercy. I was misled, the prisons are congested’' ex-plateau governor, Joshua Dariye, begged judge in court today

Former Plateau state governor, Joshua Dariye, today pleaded with Justice Adebukola Banjoko to temper justice with mercy as she handed him a 14-year jail term for diverting N1.1 billion from the state when he was governor.

Counsel to Dariye, Paul Eroko, pleaded for the court to temper justice with mercy as his client was misled by some persons.

“Appeals to your judgement do not succeed, we will fall on your mercy. The prisons are congested. They misled the governor, it is the bank, they said he didn’t have to present anything.” he said

Counsel to EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs, said Dariye did not deserve a light sentence because he “didn’t show remorse” and that a strong sentence would serve as a deterrence to those holding public offices.

“He is not remorseful, his case should serve as a deterrence,” Jacobs said.

At this point, Dariye said he wanted to speak.

“Have mercy, you are a Christian, your name is Jacob,” he said.

Justice Banjoko afterwards sentenced him to 14 years in jail without an option of fine. Dariye wept as she delivered her judgement.

Coward.

He has to serve his time. Has he even returned the money?

Do not be deceived.

Have you met an armed robber begging for his life?they are so convincing that if you are not strong, you will be tempted to beg for their lives to be spared, forgetting that they are killers and have killed.

Same thing with Politicians.

Give a politician in trouble the opportunity to speak to you,and you will forget that he just stole, not just you,but your unborn Grandchildren's common wealth.

Delta State is a classic example, and James Ibori is a hero now and even goes everywhere with Okowa.

Congested indeed.

If he had refurbished plateau prison, and put chilling airconditioners in it while he was governor, will he be crying?

Mr. ex governor, go and face your jail term!

Almost all past governors should be made to serve time in jail.

Orji kalu, TA orji, fashola, Segun oni, bafarawa etc should all be jailed. They are all thieves.

Hahahaha!

A state leader was misled while leading the rest of the state? We are all in a moving vehicle without a driver.

The day Obasanjo would be convicted upon prosecution for corruption, and he dares to lament about our prisons, I will remind him of his statement he made as president who had quickly forgotten about how he suffered in prison, saying that a prison is not meant to be a hotel, or something along that line.

If Ibori is not prosecuted since his return to Nigeria, then I will know that EFCC and Buhari are not yet ready to defeat corruption

“Have mercy, you are a Christian, your name is Jacob,” he said.

He was appealing to the emotions of religious and ethnic sycophants like FortifiedCity, but the prosecutor does not suffer from that immense idiocy.

You fit face Oghara youths that prevented his arrest in Nigeria, before he ran out of the country only to land in UK prison?

How about the most decorated scammers Tinubu and Buhari, when will the court sentence the former for mindboggling looting? How about the latter, for supervising extra judicial killings & exonerating his kinsmen of corruption charges?

Everybody has his price, even Oghara youths.

Believe me, those youths succeeded because of the person in power then.

Ibori has been tried, convicted and has served his sentence. What else is left? He cannot be tried n convicted for same offences even though by another country. That's double jeopardy.

Suddenly he remembers the prisons are congested. if he had decongested the prison in his state during his tenure, I guess he won't have had the cause to complain now. Any way he should manage like others who have been there for long.
He also has and opportunity to appeal rather than winning.

ibori that was celebrated upon his return. Buhari can not defeat corruption in Nigeria just because corruption is the foundation of this country.

why didn't he enter a plea bargain and return the money.

petty sentiments like this do not move the courts especially if the evidence is overwhelming.

you did the crime, it's time to do the time.

The prisons are congested? No be people dey there? Abi are you better than them. When you diverted such a huge amount of money, the country is not congested, your state is not congested with hungry n suffering people that you never thought of. When your lazy children were eating the states money without doing anything? You be criminal like those inside there. Common go and meet your inmates.
