Re: Is life abroad worth the stress and hype??
YES

Why?

We make a lot of money but at the same time we spend a lot of money so at the end of the day is extremely difficult to save a lot of money after all the bills are paid.

Once I raise a enough funds {$100,000 -$200,000} I’m on the next flight back to Nigeria even if I have to take a loan from the bank.
Answer 1 - "An average Nigerian" in the US can make a lot of money he/she would never have dreamt of owning except seeing it in banking halls in Nigeria.

The American Society is designed in such a way to have you working until retirement that way the economy is sustained.

When I look at my uncles & aunties that have spent 20 years to 30 years abroad without no visible investment, I really weep for them.

No house both in Nigeria & Abroad plus No Substantial Money saved up both in Nigeria & Abroad for Emergencies.

Today marked my 6 years in America {I came here on June 13th 2012}.
I have already told myself that by the next 4 years when I will be 28 years old and should have achieved my aim, I will definitely checked out of the country.
Answer 2 - You can find a job in the US until you choose to retire, In Nigeria you are at the mercy of most employers.

Can you show proof that your uncles and aunties are not doing fine?? Forget all the crocodile tears they shed.

Everyone has their own way of quantifying success... Some might just need sanity, no police harassment, good infrastructure, a ray of hope and a future for their children and children's children, and not a huge house + Benz s550 + BMW 8Series + $100k account balance.

If you were "an average Nigerian" look back at your friends you left back in Nigeria 6 years ago and tell us how they are faring.

I am abroad, forget the hype, gimme more stress and I would rather stay here!

I think success is subjective.

Each and everyone of us have our own unique definition of success.

I have been here for 6 years but I already acquired a U.S. Passport that alone to me is a success but for someone else they might have a different opinion.

Like I said before, I’m already working towards raising some Venture Capital.

Once I acquire sufficient Capital, I will relocate to Nigeria and would visit the United States on a temporary basis from time to time.

When I make a post or comment on this thread,i try not to bring Nigeria into the discussion but some people are hell bent on continually dragging the country into the fray just because of their unending animosity towards the country.if you are abroad and fall into this category, thank God for your life, but don't ever think of coming back to the country again o but to those who are still in the country,i just pity your situation cos if you don't take heed to Jeremiah 29.7, and have a change of mentality, you are most certain to die in that no solution condition of yours,no cussing.
To that illiterate fellow arguing blindly about capitalism, let me make it simple for you;it simply means a system where the private entities control every sector of the economy and you cant say Nigeria falls into this definition.some people even say Nigeria practice more of something called controlled or command economy where the government controls virtually all the sectors.
My mentioning about America practicing capitalism is not for negative vibe,as for me self,I prefer it over any other because it's more efficient and you get the services you are paying for,it actually promotes excellence and strong commitments unlike the others that promote corruptions and ineptitudes.

I have already told myself that by the next 4 years when I will be 28 years old and should have achieved my aim, I will definitely checked out of the country.

Then move back to Nigeria and start thinking about settling down with a wife and having kids.

I would only come back to the United States for occasional visit.

One thing I have noticed among Nigerians is once you cross the 10 year mark, it’s extremely difficult to move back to Nigeria.
.....
Wow!!!....you are still relatively young, you still have energy to hustle, abeg do..that figure is definitely within your reach in no time .more so,you seem to have your plans.
You remembering your first touchdown date here is more of fond memories to you.it's well.
About people not coming back home after a long sojourn abroad can be attributed to various reasons among them is the fact they see themselves no longer fit into the society, the assumed mental disparity, the security phobia, different in cultural behavior,no more friends or contacts outside their extended family members and above all,no much money to impress and live big.many reasons you must say, reason it's good not to cut ties entirely with your home country.

That's the best sentence/quote I have seen in the travel thread.
Abroad is overhyped. Most of my family members are in USA and Germany. They are not really better than those back in Nigeria. The major difference is just cold sad
If you have capital, Nigeria can be fun especially living outside Lagos (sorry Lagosians)

This is funny.......... the Nigeria i know is over hyped. Money is not everything... even with money, there is insecurity, kidnappings, armed robbery, fear of unknown travelling at night, herdsmen slaughter, corrupt politicians, bureaucracy and bribery to do govt jobs, excess use of force by security personnel. That's not 2 say abroad doesn't have its own issues but bad is forever better than worse.

Depends on the part of Nigeria you are staying. I have never being robbed or kidnapped or have to bribe any official. I am not saying it doesn't exist but many Nigerians are not affected by it.
You can live well in Nigeria especially the highbrow areas of major cities. I was in bauchi last month for about a month and you need to see how some relatively unknown parts of Nigeria are living life to the fullest.

Success is relative, my sister. I stayed in Germany during my young years and I never really enjoyed it. It's just work and work and more work. Life should be more than that.

It seems people are trying to give themselves valid reasons to justify their actions of choosing to remain in the country or to live and die abroad instead, that's why they keep dragging Nigeria into this.

No matter how much you argue for or against they'll be someone out there who has sold all his properties/inheritance in Nigeria hoping to travel abroad and pick money from the streets. Another is there deceiving himself/herself that he's giving HOPE AND FUTURE to his children by relocating. I've asked myself does this mean that no one has hope or future because we live here? cheesy

As silly as the above reasoning seems some people have based their decision on only that. Someone arguing so strongly about Nigeria being capitalist should tell you that uninformed people are the majority in this country, hence scams like MMM, several travel scams where people sell properties to pay for fake jobs abroad thrive here, also someone has N10m still complaining of poverty, same person give agents to secure visa abroad

OBJ said if you want to hide something from a Nigerian, write it in a book. Most people don't thirst for helpful information, our searches on porn/lesbianism/gay through Google are amongst the highest in the world. Go to Romance section, that's where young minds camp, same people will argue here as if there know more than Aistein.

Ask yourself why Nigerians are not being granted asylum abroad. Even Maiduguri where Boko Haram is present there are still many local governments within the state where they have never and can't enter, hence life still continues for many living there. Talk less of you living far distance away. The reason why most of you seek relocation is not Herdsmen or Boko Haram issue, no one will believe that lie, it's economic migration. The belief that money is to be picked on the streets abroad. Well good luck, hopefully you get your visa and start life there but quit using Nigeria as an excuse, that's why you won't be granted asylum based on that.

The topic says Is life abroad worth the stress?

It clearly shows we are using the United States (base of the poster) to make comparisons with Nigeria (her ex-husband tongue).

I don't understand the asylum link
Would you rather jump from place to place in Nigeria avoiding insecurity or go to a country where your safety is assured to a high extent, say 95% tongue no matter what part of the country you are in?

If it doesn't work fine for you, get a visa simple. The last time I checked, the richest Nigerians live here in Nigeria.

The answer to the topic here cannot be a yes or no. Abroad may be worth the stress for some and horrible for others.
If you love the desk job kind of life, abroad is for you but as for me and my friends, we are entrepreneurs who make money easily here in Nigeria than abroad. All my people abroad are basically not better than we left behind in Nigeria.

I can easily travel to them and not the other way round. They are tied down by bills, job, etc.

This is a typical write of of somebody who the system has frustrated to part ways with. Sometimes, it part of the natural selection. You believe not having a room at home for one who has spent 20years abroad isn't quarantee to a fulfilled life but disagree with the man who is landlord at Ikorodu. People drive death traped cars which you can't afford over there. If there is no good business you think 4m can afford; then you are lazy that shows the level of your acumen. May be one of those people who want good life at platter of gold.
If you are comfortable paying rent all your life because you want easy like, that's your choice.
May be history should tell you that America was once in Nigeria status. That American success is based of African slavery, corrupt global politics. That America keep seeping Nigeria of her oil money. American keep Africa under developed for economic and political interest. That America has ghetto too. That America has beggars too. That America has hopeless people too. That America once had a corrupt system, bad health care and finally, that despite is success has her problem to.
I'm sorry, we are in a shithole country but am not among people who will run away from making my country like American. Nigerian isn't the only country in the world whose passport is worthless like you said. Many people from other countries dream of Nigerian as your dreamt America.
But l quarantee you one thing. Most of you guys at your age bracket aren't better than dudes here. This children from ghetto ends up doing better that you guys there: for those in legal livelihood.

I read your thread on life of a student abroad with amusement. It's clear that you are from a rich background here in Nigeria. Apart from school grants I'm sure you still had to cough out about $20,000K for tuition/living cost and other expenses, you are so privileged that you prefer to volunteer during your break than to hustle for needed funds because money is not your problem. Now, many American citizens in your shoes will have to work their back sides off to pay up student loans, even those on scholarship will still have to hustle to pay living cost.

In America you have to live through the fear of being bombed by nuclear weapons from countries like N.K, any lunatic can misuse guns to kill people, natural disasters like hurricane, tornadoes, wild fire rampage the area, you also have to cope with discrimination because of the color of your skin, even your foods have been altered to poison your blood streams (GE) , drugs, serial killers, robbers, terrorists are there too

Enjoy your abroad grin In my opinion it's good to visit, if you want to live there feel very free . l encourage people to visit often but don't sell your birthright
