REX
I waited my turn patiently, tapping my steering wheel to the old school tune coming from the radio. I didn't know who it was and in fact was tapping my fingers partly to stay awake. I glanced at the dashboard checking the time, it was 10:44am. A normal person should be energetic and would be a little bright eyed no matter how tiring the day was. But when you could hardly boast of 5 hours sleep in the last 72 hours then you were no longer normal.
I leaned hard on my horn although it was fruitless, I was still about four cars from the pump but at least it jerked me fully awake.

The last two years.. 19 months to be precise had been a....I still run out of adjectives to describe what had taken everyone by storm and what was still referred to as the devil's initiative. Trust the media to at least come up with a provoking if not witty headliner.
I had been at the center of it all, well to be precise, we were a handful of people but I had been at the core of the center, from the moment I had found out that Mr Amunike or Chief Amunike, business tycoon and owner of the "Sunrise Steel" company, (not to mention the now out of favour ammunition alcohol drink) had been trafficking helpless women, mostly widows out of the country, It had become my life's calling to expose him. The scars still burned, I had lost Fomé, Andy had lost Mona and his unborn child. I worried about my friend. He had lost his wife and unborn child and while I found Olivia by some unbelievable luck, he had no one. He had thrown himself fully into our PI firm, taking on case after case, closing down surveillance, security meetings and had even engaged himself in field work with Bami and Tonye. And trust me, the BROTA agency was engaged in lots of field work. Although it was relatively safe but when I say relatively I mean 60%. We had the backing of the Government, at least the Lagos State Government (I had saved his life after all) and when the clients multiplied and the case load became too much we had to recruit new agents. I fully trusted Bami and Tonye's capacity when it came to field work and left that aspect in their capable hands. Both had saved my life and I had so many memories to remind me, was it when Tonye's shot cracked the night when I had been flat on my back expecting the blade from the shadow with 500 scared widows behind me? Or when Bami had-
The blast from the horn jolted me again but this time it was from the car behind me. I started my engine and covered the space that had been freed ahead
I opened my shirt button and dug out the chain I had round my neck. There was a heart shaped pendant at the center and I opened it and stared at the two pictures on either side. No, there was no way I was getting involved in any field work or any case that looked the least bit dangerous.
I smiled at Olivia feeling a love so intense my chest burned, but then I glanced at the second picture. At the clear eyes so much like mine, the curly hair, sweet dimples buried in her fat cheeks and the heat became warm immediately. Emma, my Emma, my daughter. She was a year and two months...two weeks, 3 days and a couple hours old (heey...I was once a banker) anyway I had a different kind of responsibility now and I couldn't afford the kind of heroic charge that once burst through my veins and brought me a whisker from death on too many occasions to run free.
Which was why the past couple of days had been hectic, troubling, stressful with all manner of thoughts going through my mind.

The hunt for the last shadow had kicked of quite expectantly. The media had branded us the golden detectives, the Governor along with a senator had gifted us a golden budget to bring the bastard Chief Security Officer of Sunrise Steel and the head and last remaining member of the sunset shadows. For the first time I had access to the kind of intelligence I watched on the big screen so many times. Tonye and Bamy were ex DSS agents with reliable sources, the Government backing had linked us with different agents from different agencies and I come across fancy gadgets and fancy strategies but Mr Kehinde continued to elude us. He remained the last shadow, always disappearing into thin air without a trace. One day he was in Australia, the next day Japan, the next he had been sighted from a satellite image and was definitely in the Caribbean. He remained elusve and it had been a blind chase from one country to another.
At least we had traveled the world. But then time went by, Olivia's stomach started to get bigger and my priorities started to realign.

The moment the nurse had placed Emma in my hands and she had looked up at me with big black eyes I knew I had to kiss my short detective career goodbye.
I started my engine again when the car moved and crawled forward while I remembered the conversation I had with Bami in the hospital corridor the night of Emma's birth;
"Bami...its over, I'm done, I can't risk my family again man...I'd take my old job back. Ariyo would take me back at the bank" even as the words left my mouth I knew it was folly.
Bami had looked at me strangely (with his strange eyes)
"That's crazy...you can't expect things to be the same as before...things changed and you know it but you're still Rex Obasi...you're the R in BROTA...you're my brother....you're Andy's brother!"
The guilt had been amazing and I felt very selfish then but then we talked, really talked and he could understand my fears. I had been trained by the best teacher which was experience and a good teacher didn't need to repeat himself twice.
Finally I found the perfect compromise agreed to take over Olivia's old job, running the desk at the agency was relatively safe and Olivia had gladly taken indefinite leave so to be frank I was the new receptionist/secretary. And whenever I stamped a case file or read a confidential detective report, I felt the longing deep deep deep down. But that's all it can ever be. I was going to be 31 in three months and I planned to remain a loving father and husband for the rest of my life and I wanted it to be a long one.
Which was why I was worried sick since the last three days. It all started with an anonymous mail and it brought back hunting memories.
The moment I saw the address I had felt a cold chill inside of me.
@therealshadow.
The message had been chilling.

"Your sun has been bright and overhead for a long time. Hope you enjoyed it but now sunset is here and you know what that means..."
I immediately remembered the messages the crazy shadow killer used to send me and how he had almost killed Andy the night at the wharf.

I knew better than to tell Olivia and it had taken me just a second reading of the threat to know what I had to do.
First I convinced her to spend the weekend with my parents who always called to speak to and ask about their granddaughter daughter almost every night. Then I arranged with Bami to have two of the best agents arrange shadow security...which ironically meant Olivia had no idea she was under security watch.
72 hours of running around in circles with no lead, no reply to my bold(who the hell are you?)enquiry and no meaningful clues from anywhere to go on. This could only mean Mr Kehinde was back and he was coming after me. God. Why me?

So here I was thinking about thinking, sitting in a fuel station just a car away from the pump.
I finally bought fuel, filling my tank cause of the scarcity rumours that had been flying about lately.
As I drove home my phone rang. I checked the caller ID. It was Sam, aka S.s (Short Sam)
Sam was my buddy from the university and a brilliant hacker. He had helped me hack into the widows initiative website two years ago and still helped me out frequently. My phone was connected to my car's Bluetooth and since the window was up and I was the only one in the car, I answered the call.

"Ss....any development?"
He sounded tired "men its a dead end....whoever this real shadow that sent you the mail is, he knows what he's doing"
"So you couldn't trace the ip or something"
"There's just so little to go by, the address was created a week ago, and the IP placed the location at Sweden"
"Sweden?" I was baffled
"Then Russia, then Ukraine, then Croatia....the list is long not to talk of the firewalls"
I scratched the back of my neck tiredly "typical of a shadow"
"I'd keep trying, if anything comes out I'd let you know"
"Thanks Sam...I appreciate this"
"Hey, its all for a good course, finally my conscience is clear and I'm doing what I love"

I ended the call and tried Olivia's call through voice command.
She picked on the second ring.
"Hello darling...how are you?"
I could hear the ruckus in the background. The shouting of kids playing and having fun and I smiled. I also lied "I'm doing good....I've just been working out although the house has been quite lonely and I miss you like crazy" (at least that wasn't a lie)
"Awwww....well here has been the total opposite of lonely...Utebo is here with the twins and Emma and Soma have been playing all weekend." I thought her voice sounded strained. Soma was my immediate elder sister's daughter and just ten months older than Emma.
"How's mom and dad...is any of them there?"
"Dad just went out not long. But mama is is in her shop outside. Do you want to speak to her?"
"No I'd call her later...and I'd call you later, I'm almost home...give Emma a big kiss for me"
I could hear the smile in her voice. "I would, I'd collect mine when I come home"
"Okay bye I love you" I rushed and cut the call. I didn't want them home yet. Not until this last shadow threat was nullified.

I entered my garage and my phone rang again this time it was Andy.
He didn't waste any time for greetings.
"There's been a murder"
"Have you reached Bami....you know what I have on my hands won't give me time for-"
He interrupted me. "Oba, believe me you're going to need to see this one"

The spot was called downtown. The name came about because of the downward slope of the terrain. Benue's most dangerous could be found downtown. It wasn't a place one strolled into carelessly. Sharp eyes were always on the lookout for any new face or novince that they could fleece.

'Sabi boy' or Sabi as he was called was a stout man who sold weed downtown. He had been nabbed by the police too many times to count during their frequent raids.
Sabi had a scar that ran across his left eye from the middle of his forehead, similar to Scar in the lion king cartoon. The scar was as a result of a broken bottle from one of his numerous bar fights.
He was at his usual spot, sitting on a pile of bricks surrounded by rugged looking young men as they smoked and looked about warily for the police.
Alli no joy looked around as he searched for a change reliable information source.

The young men obsereved him in return but didn't say or do anything. Everybody knew Alli no joy, you didn't mess with him. If it had been his sissy son on the other hand, his phone and cash would have been long gone by now. But not Alli.

Alli spotted Sabi boy in his usual spot and made his way towards him.

The conversation which was football related died down as he approached.

"Sabi"

"Baba"

"How you dey" Alli observed the now silent men and waved in greeting "I greet una o"

"morning chief!"
"well done boss"

Alli turned his attention to the dealer. "Sabi....I know say your ear dey always dey ground, anything wey happen you must to know. I need your help Sabi"

Sabi boy ran his hand along the scar as was his habit. His eyes however shone brightly. "oga no joy you know as e dey be....depending on the information wey you need you go need to buy market atleast"

"I don't smoke" Alli said pointedly.

"eeehn...that one no mean say you no go drop the least for your boys na"

The other men made agreeable sounds.

Alli dug into his pocket and brought out a 500# note. He gave it to Sabi boy amidst the cheers and hailings from the men.

"you're mouthed baba"
"you too much Sah"
"baba no joy done give us joy ooo"

Sabi passed round fresh set of packaged hemp worth 500 naira. He fingered his scar then observed Alii no joy who had been waiting patiently.

"ehen....wetting you wan know?"

Alli lowered his voice "There's a new woman in this neighbourhood, she's very dangerous...she kidnapped a young girl last night. What do you know about her?"

Sabi fingered his scar and shut his eyes deep in thought. He snapped his fingers suddenly and called out. "Sly come tell baba no joy wettin you been dey tell me this morning"

Sly was a black as coal sly looking young man. He had fox eyes that didn't inspire trust and nicotine stained teeth. He was currently sitting on a detached trailer tire and he sat up when Alli turned his focus on him. "One of my guys said there was a woman he saw in the park and he tried to take her money...she was selling ice cream but she brought out a gun and took his wallet instead. We laughed at him when he told us..." he laughed nervously and Alli suspected the 'friend' he was talking about was himself.

Alli no joy pricked his ears at the mention of ice cream. Utebo had said they all had ice cream in the park hadn't she? Apart from Olivia who was in the hospital for refusing the ice cream.

"This icecream...describe the cart, was there any address?"

Sly scratched his head deep in thought then shook it. "no...I don't think so, but honestly I no fit remember"

"How did she look?" Utebo had given a clear description already but he wanted to be sure.

"She was fat and old...but I remember her back no rhyme at all....its like she was wearing butt pad" And I was wondering what kind of grand ma she was.

"shiooor...how you take know all these ones na....abi na you she rob so?" Sabi exclaimed and the men burst into laughter.
But he had given Alli a vital piece of information. she wore a butt pad...which meant she was probably not fat but had been in disguise.
That could only mean the woman could be Fome after all....

:::::::::::::::::::::::
The doctor bandaged my torso, wrapping the gauze round and round tightly until I could feel it literally pressing against the cracked rib and hopefully steadying it. At a point he told me to lift my hands and helped me stretch when I raised my hands halfway. I almost blacked out from the sharp burst of pain but slowly the pain dulled and became almost bearable, thanks to the bandage.

When he was done, he moved on to Andy and began the bandaging process.

"argggh!" Bami shouted when the doctor lifted his hands up.

The nurse unwrapped the bandage from my head slowly. She cleaned the cut above my eye with warm water and cottonwool, and rubbed the glistening balm on my split lip which was already drying fast, thanks to the scented balm she rubbed.
When she was done she produced a glass of water and two panadol and another drug I didn't recognize. I thanked her and took the medicine. I was feeling slightly better...if that was possible in my situation.
She repeated the same process with Bami and watched him swallow the medicine. Andy and my assistant Jimoh entered the room. They had disappeared sometime past midnight (probably to search for somewhere more comfortable)
I tried to swing my legs to the side of the bed and sit up but I suddenly felt so tired I could only remain horizontal. "Andy where did you sleep?" I noticed he was still in pain, although his injuries were not as serious as Bami and mine.
"I slept in the car..Jimoh slept in the waiting room....Rex, I just spoke to Tonye, your family is awake....your mother was the last to wake but she just woke up about an hour ago"
Half of the worry drained away but the other half immediately took its place and my apprehension for my daughter and wife doubled. "has there been any ransom call yet? How about Olivia....who's with her...I'd like to speak with her"
"nothing yet....Rex are you okay?" Andy asked worriedly
I blinked "what do you mean, of course i'm okay"
"you were sleeping just now" Andy said
I was about to deny idignantly when the snore came from Bami's bed. I looked at the doctor who was scribbling whatever for the nurse hunched over his shoulder.

"doctor, what did you do to us?"
he looked up and smiled sadly "you both need to rest....the diazapam you took should at least let you sleep for at least 7-9 hours..when you wake you'd feel refreshed trust me"
Jeez! just what kind of doctor was this? Drugging his patiends? In fact I would give him a piece of my mind..but maybe in the next 7-9 hours I thought lazily as I joined Bami in snoring.

::::::::::::::::::::

She got down at the bus park and watched the woman from the corner of her eye. Other passengers were highlighting and grumbling. The man who had complained through out had threatened not to come down until he was dropped at the original bus stop. So he remained inside the only person, even the driver had gotten down.
The woman seemed to have forgotten the phone call because she didn't seem to pay her any special attention. She was battling with her bags. A big box and one ghana must go both of them were filled up and looked heavy.
She considered her options uncomfortable with the position she found herself in. She didn't have any option...She had hoped to corner the woman probably when she went to ease herself since she hadn't come down during the journey. But the woman remained behind the bus, negotiating with a taxi driver and pulling the bags behind her.

She watched her walk away much to her chagrin then the baby gave a short cry and she patted her back soothingly till Emma continued sleeping. She had planned to hop from one bus to another but right now she needed the privacy of a taxi and so she negotiated the address with the elderly man who had very strong mouth odour that she hurriedly agreed to his extravaggant just to get him to keep shut.

45 minutes later, she was at their flat calming a nervous Christie.
Christie was cooing over the baby and although she disapproved (there was no time to get attached to the baby and Christie was too soft) she studied her face and noticed the swollen lip. "Did Andy do that to you?"
"Yes...but I did worse to him"
"good. tell me how did he find out?"
"it must have been the DNA switch, he saw me come out of the office after the switch and I had to pretend that the forged key was the spare key...only for that scatterbrain doctor to misplace his real keys"
"hmmmm....."she switched on the television and flipped through the channels searching for breaking News. "Christie everything may get very rough from here...I think it would be better-"
"that's nonsense...we're in this together"
She smiled and increased the volume when she finally stumbled on a news station.
There was no mention of the police men who had lost their lives in the Benue explosion instead she listened with keen interest as the reporter gave sketchy details about the multiple murder of DSS operatives. The killer's blood had been found at the crime scene and forensic matched the blood with a soldier who was a war hero and currently recuperating fro battle wounds. His name was not given.
She stood up and began pacing. She could bet her internal organs that the senior official that had been killed was the counselor. He had been a thorn in her flesh for a long time...but she hadn't planned for him to die this way...not with him taking secrets to the grave.
Who had killed him and why? She could bet her limbs whoever the killer was he was from Rex's side of the fence. It sounded just like the type, ex cop, ex soldier, ex agents....
This was a reminder that Rex and his team were still very much dangerous and which was the major reason she had taken the baby, apart from the burning need she had to see him suffer that is.
The baby was wide awake now and crying loudly.
"oh...shut that hole, before I drug her again" she instructed Christie placing both hands on her ears. She was trying to think for goodness sake.
Christie bumped te baby gently and hummed she took the baby to the kitchen and the cry reduced and stopped gradually.

She brought out her phone and sent the message. It read; The hole in the wall, meet me by midnight. She couldn't wait to see their next move. She believed they had learnt their lesson in Benue when she blew the cops to bits, still she never did anything without a plan B.
After a while with no reply she sent a second message 'if you don't come, she's dead.'
Satisfied she switched off her phone.

:::::::::::::::

Dagnet located the fashion school run by Ada, the chief's only daughter. She had named it 'voltage trends' a fake name Rex had used when he pretended to be a magazine editor two years ago. She had actually assisted in the website creation and the magazine printing...lifting Rex's face book photos and photoshopping etc so she was well aware of the story.
Inside was cosy even though it was empty. There were mannequins in every corner dressed in unique garments. ringing from fashionable to strange to the outright ridiculous.

Dagnet checked her watch hurriedly. She had a morning session but now it would just have to wait.
The sales girl who had been busy with her phone finally approached her. "what do you want?"
"I want to see your boss, miss Adaobi Amunike"
The sales girl studied her for some seconds then decided she was harmless. She directed Dagnet to the office.
"just follow that other corridor there...the very last door, that's it"

knock knock
"Come in"
Dagnet entered the office and found Ada making a sketch of some kind of gown that she could tell from the immature sketch that the gown alone would be a very revealing outfit.
However the young fashonista was not impressed, she sighed and squeezed the paper into a ball and tossed it into the basket. The bin was full with balled up papers.
She glanced at Dagnet expecting to see the sales girl. She was suprised and immediately smelled a potential customer. maybe a renowned designer ready to offer her the chance to showcase her designs on the runway.
Instead the woman said "i'm investigating the murder of a young woman that worked for your family....do you know any Bisi Marcus?"
Dagnet saw the recognition flash in Ada's eyes. "i know her.....when my mother's boutique shut down shestopped coming. I've not seen her again, you said she is dead?" she seemed genuinely shocked.
"yes, murdered"
"my God..."
"where can I find your brother Emenike?"
The death news must have shook the young girl more than she dared to admit because she rattled off the address of the club rebel.
Dagnet decided to try another angle "Ada, how well did you know Fome?"
"Fome.....she was like a sister to me...her death was too devastating. why, you think its the same person that killed them?"

Dagnet observed the girl. Her suprise seemed genuine. It was either she was a good actress and pretender or she was really clueless.
She took a deep breath "look Ada Where can I see your brother right now?"
For the first time the young lady scrutinized her properly. "you know what, you failed to identify yourself....let me see your badge or any ID"
Dagnet swallowed "actually, errm....my badge isn't with me this moment...but your brother's life is in danger, that's why I need to warn him immediately"
Dagnet watched the emotions wage war within Ada, finally she gave in, balled the paper all though she hadn't drawn anything yet then threw it in the bin. She scribbled furiously on the fresh paper then handed it to Dagnet. "that's the address of one of our family house..my brother stays there....please protect him"
"don't you worry...you've made the right choice"

Martha Obasi pinched herself hard and when she felt the sting she sighed. She wasn't dreaming, this was reality. A very harsh reality...but reality nontheless. She couldn't even remember what happened yesterday. She could only remember sittin under the tree, hearing music and gisting. But now Utebo, Tonye and the new girl were telling her things that made her want to block her ears.
Fome?
ah-ah.
Fome?
then her darling grand daughter Emma, kidnapped!
She got to her feet slowly "I have to go"
"where are you going mum??" Utebo asked
To the hospital of course!" Poor Olivia would be devastated thinking her daughter is gone for good...she needs someone to commiserate with her atleast"
Martha looked across the table to were Buzz sat bound tightly to his chair. His face had swollen up like it was made of yeast. His mouth was bound tightly with duct tape. She watched him for a full chilling minute with a cold expression. Finally she looked at Tonye. "Ehen, where's Rex...I would have thought he would have come with you....after all its his family...where's he?"Three pairs of eyes looked away unable to maintain eye contact with her.

He had good intentions sha, but he caused a lot of heartbreaks truly. My boss, welcome hope the writing is going smoothly
.....Oh yes, he did; too much in my opinion. I still can't believe Fome doesn't know that she killed the wrong person.

...My Oga, writing is going steady. Upload should be around the tail end of the year. You are killing it with this story.

I read The Devil wears Okrika late last year, and I stumbled on this just last week, without reading the Delayed Diagnosis. I thought I'd be able to pull this off without reading the Delayed Diagnosis, but when I got to the 10th page , I realized I wasn't really getting the story, so I had to go read The Delayed Diagnosis, ad now I'm back here.
God, Mr Souloho you are phenomenal.
God bless you, I've been unable to drop my phone since I started reading.

Your description of Sabi made me remember Kokobire, the lord of Abete in Iwaya Yaba Lagos in the 90s. If you want to know anything, even what happened in your room, just visit Kokobire's stand in Abete and someone would fill you in.
Ride on Oga Soul!

I always plead with people that quote a while write up just to make a sentence, it's bad and it angers other readers, abeg let's desist from the act...
