U.S and China play football and put a lot of money into it. Some big names play in the chinese league. China will be a force in football in ten years the way they are going. Both countries have been to the FIFA world cup. Please don't lump them up with your sorry Little India that can never qualify for neither football world cup nor rugby world cup. It's an unforgivable insult. grin grin

Kikuyu1 - I believe PPP cannot be use to compare countries against each other - because quality of a hair cut in Nairobi is not the same as in Lagos - for example a country like kenya that has very good service industry cannot compare to laggard like TZ- If you see the quality of good manufactured internally in Uganda - you simply cannot compare to kenya.

PPP is only useful internally for stuff like tracking poverty & internal/domestic indicators etc - therefore for this thread - anyone quoting PPP figures need to study econ 101 again.

what a fucktarrrd!!!!! It's not about u believing or not, u're unknown in d economics society. So u can shove ur 'belief' down ur arse.

U see why u're a dunce? Where on earth is PPP usefull internally to track poverty and whatever ur brain remits

Purchasing power parity (PPP) is an economic theory that compares different countries' currencies through a "basket of goods" approach. According to this concept, two currencies are in equilibrium or at par when a basket of goods (taking into account the exchange rate) is priced the same in both countries.

Increasingly, Nigeria is becoming a centre for big tech investment and commercially oriented start-ups. Whatever the country’s challenges, investors and entrepreneurs are attracted by the prospect of scaling applications to Africa’s largest population and economy. Many have set up shop in Lagos’s Yaba district. There you can find the headquarters for e-commerce start-up Africa Internet Group and digital payments venture Paga, located near incubators Andela and Co-Creation Hub.

Nigeria’s tech sector is becoming representative of repatriate entrepreneurs reversing some of Africa’s brain drain and IT reshaping the continent’s global linkages. All three of Africa’s most recognized e-commerce startups – Jumia, Konga and MallforAfrica – were founded by Nigerians who earned their university degrees and initial private sector experience in the US. A noteworthy portion of the roughly $600 million in VC to these entities comes from American and European investment firms. And the management of Jumia’s parent, Africa Internet Group, is a mix of repatriate Africans and MBA types from the US and Europe attracted to the continent’s IT opportunities over development work.

From Nigeria to Kenya, and Rwanda to Ghana, tech innovation is starting to influence multiple sectors: energy, agriculture, banking, healthcare, entertainment, transport and fashion.

Having researched the topic for the past six years, I believe technology in Africa has the potential to create more impact faster than anywhere previously in the world. There’ll be a lot to unpack on that prediction. To start, here are some trends to watch in the continent’s wired future.

Go slow on cheap insults and I may be able to get what you mean.I suspect this is beyond your paygrade hence the insults.... The de-facto comparison for countries is nominal GDP (in USD). GDP (PPP) is only good for estimating the size of economy internally --- otherwise you'd have to assume the international basket of goods & services prices also reflect the quality but if you wanted to internally find if Nigerians were becoming poorer or richer...GDP(PPP) is more accurate than nominal GDP. But to compare your GDP with Kenya - Nominal GDP (USD) is what matters.

You skipped this....Nigeria is now at 2007-2010 - when Kenya is already a matured ICT Hub - our broandband speeds beat US & even Isreal - and we are building techno city. While you're busy at first stage - of building hubs....we are building an entire city for technology companies - and clearly Kenya's Silicon Savannah will be answer to Silicon Valley of San Francisco. Not Nigeria's Yaba valley grin grin

The rise of Silicon Savannah...

Most discussions of the origins of Africa’s tech movement circle back to Kenya, which laid down four markers between 2007 and 2010 to inspire the country’s Silicon Savannah moniker: mobile money, a globally recognized crowdsourcing app, Africa’s tech incubator model, and a genuine government commitment to ICT policy.

1) Exhibit 1 - Gov commitment to ICT Policy

2) Tecno City coming along - 5,000 ha city

The African Development Bank estimates that 55% of sub-Saharan Africa’s economic activity is informal. That’s a massive commercial space without such services as business enterprise software, small business banking, affordable third-party logistics or internet access. Expect VC-backed start-ups to attempt scalable applications for nearly every corner of Africa’s informal economy.

Much of this is already occurring in Nigeria. First-time dotcoms are sprouting up for everything from e-commerce logistics, online auto sales and real-estate listings, to airline bookings, employment sites and credit rating services. The opportunities are infinite, especially as Africa’s broadband and smartphone penetration rates continue to improve.

Actually checked the so called CodeLagos - this open competition for kids above 16yrs & above - basically university level. So far trained about 15k Lagosians out-of-school and they are hoping to roll out in schools this Dec 2018.

I am not sure what end goal is - of training everyone basic coding skills smiley

Something similar to kenya's Ajira - training kenyans for online work - including coding.

So far Kenya Digital Ajira has trained 40,000 plus kenyans...with a target of 1M kenyan working online in 2022.
Ajira programme trains graduates in soft skills such as how to respond to clients, how to reply emails, professional etiquette among others.

Ajira is meant to create online jobs like 'how to reply emails among others. grin they don't learn coding in ajira, stop lying. angry ajira has trained only 1000 peeps n 30000 peeps have registered. Stop lying. angry Kenyans are learning how to send emails and how to respond to clients in d 21st century. angry

Here's what codelagos is about.
“We will continue to train students in Scratch, Python and Mobile App development, depending on their level. This term we will also be introducing Oracle’s Alice and Greenfoot programming languages, through a partnership with Oracle Academy,”

Unlike Kenya, USA and Chins know how well football will help them... Before US hosted the world cup in 1994, football.was like the 10th most popular sport in the country. But hosting that tournament made a huge difference.. it still remains the best world cup till date in terms of fans attendance. it also happen to be the world cup that announced themselves to the world grin ..we were hot! ..an unlucky loss to Italy in the round of 16 ended our chances though....The US has followed up the success of the 1994 tournament by winning the hosting bid for the 2026 tournament alongside Canada and Mexico (has your little India ever hosted any major sport event,I wonder) and u say they don't play football?
China on the other hand started a complete revolution on their football sector some years go... they are spending billion of dollars to restructure their league by signing world class(mostly finished ) players to their league and paying them ridiculous amounts of money (Carlos tevez was earning $500,000 a week in China before he left ) ..and u say China don't play football!

Even your masters, the Indians who taught u(and are still teaching u) cricket are trying to blend in with the football world too.. they recently hosted the FIFA u-17 world (I ask again, has Kenya ever hosted a major sport event before)

Thank you very much.

One thing I'm still yet to understand though is 'why the hell is life so expensive in Kenya compared to Nigeria'?

About 2 years ago, Nigeria's economy fell into recession and the price of many goods and services in the country doubled since our currency value fell almost 100%.

Kenya has almost caught up with Nigeria in terms of income per capital (nominal), but in terms of income per capital (ppp), Nigeria is still far ahead of Kenya. Why the hell is this so?

Kenyans here boast of a greater self sufficiency than Nigeria and laugh at us for importing almost everything. Why then is the cost of living in Kenya almost twice that of Nigeria? (judging by the closeness of our nominal income per capitals against the wideness in gap of our ppp income per capitals).

Kikuyu1, gallivant, NairobiWalker, mtis, Jonraid, TayserMahiri et al.

Life is generally more expensive in more advanced countries/economies than in agrarian backward stone age ones like Nigeria.

What happens when those kids grow up? Why cant they do anything of note in the WC? They get whipped for playing like amateurs. Do they get a chance after they exit the baby stage or do you guys start corrupting in that only a few or none of the soccer smart kids play for ur national team.

Anyway, unnecessary, even Ghana does well at that baby stage they are the third most successful and believe it or not, the other club members there are Saudia (KSA) who got five from Russia the other day. There is also Russia (former Soviets). So nuh, your success at this stage is only a show of misplaced priorities, how much you place importance in irrelevant events and get butterflies when the true tests come. In football, Nigeria is only as good as Ghana or Cameroon. Beyond Africa, you are minnows. Get the strap!
