I was about going for my weekly shopping and something just came to my mind, is there any rule that state we must cook rice for launch on Sundays? 90% of households in Nigeria eat rice very Sunday. I just decided to cook yam and egg sauce tomorrow to see if something unusual will happen

My father used to tell me that while he was young eating rice was seen as a privilege so it was only prepared on Sunday, plenty rice small meat. Most elderly people I've met always tell me how they only ate rice Sunday so they only prepared it Sunday. It's nice but I don't follow that tradition. It's a beautiful thing though, just that Nigeria is poor at following tradition, it could be used to grow the rice market

Gone are those days When riice was gold. Today things have Changed, people can have what they desire but then I still believe rice , bread, yam , beans are mostly eaten by the well to do, even some fast to Church for prayers and break the fast after service.

It was influence by 3 factors

Which is advent of rice coming to nigeria
The economy then
And religion

When rice came to nigeria it was costly to get it was a special food liked by many just like indomie but it was expensive to buy ..and the economy then was more of less of the middle class it was more of a proverty level and people couldnt afford it .so it was only eaten once a week as you know nigeria and religion are intertwined u couldnt separate them in the past so sunday was the best days for christan to cook rice and it all started in the church before it got to peoples homes

Most people cook rice on sunday because it's a family tradition they grew up with. But for me, I don't really have special foods for special days. I can wake up in the morning and just feel like eating eba, and my wonderful fiance will wash her hand and join me. Right now I am even thinking of cooking white soup

It's a weekend fever....perhaps visitors are coming by, so rice is preferable dish for visiting guest.

Because in the olden days, rice was a very special and scarce commodity, eaten in a big man's house during an occassion.

As time went by, it started being grown locally, but still in subsistent quantities. So average families could afford to eat it once a week. And as Christianity started penetrating into communities, Sunday gatherings became common, and was seen as a very spacial day. Hence the average families cooked rice mostly on Sundays.

Now it's become a tradition.

*oral history by my dad.

let me quote you cos my dad too is saying it now rice is usually eaten thrice a year nu year Christmas and Easter and it was not easily available and also cost

hence average family afford it once a week and mostly Sunday cos everybody is at home so as to have a taste that's y it's mostly on Sunday

Aside Asia/India/China/Burma/Southern China that rice originated from, West Africa has a long history of rice cultivation. So rice was not luxury for centuries when grown locally. It was in fact a staple. Though the manual nature of harvesting and processing was tedious. But baring rodents/bugs, it was easy to store for a couple of years as food for lean times too.

It became luxury when local rice cultivation reduced and imported rice became normal in cities, later in rural areas too. The polished appearance of imported rice also make it more pleasant to the eye. Though nutritionally WORSE than local manually processed rice.
Any imported thing readily becomes status symbol in Nigeria, especially if initially affordable to many.

Yes if it is well packaged and appealing to the eyes it will definetely be bought than local rice or local product we .Nigerians dont patronized imported items bcus it is imported ..we patronized bcus these items have better qualities than ours. nigeria is different set of people when you compare to other african countries we go for the best even when we still leave in high proverty with all these we still have the best economy in africa ..if nigeria improve thier qualities of product even the western people we partronize us... .

Yep we like to live above our means. And it has been catastrophic for us: normalisation of corruption, get rich quick schemes (419, yahoo plus, money rituals) and too much importation putting pressure on the Naira plus trade deficit with the West.

I doubt your claim of best economy in Africa. From my experience, Morocco has a better run economy, Tunisia too. Botswana, Namibia & South Africa are better economies too. All have well below 70 to 75% poverty rate of Nigeria. Nigeria can hardly boast of a better economy than Rwanda, Ghana or Ethiopia these days.

What Nigeria has is a large population and therefore larger economy. Nigeria will need to be around 4 to 5 times our current GDP to economically be at par with South Africa.

Large economy is not equal to best economy/low poverty/low unemployment rate. While South Africa has fairly high unemployment rate, the overall economy is good enough to afford paying jobless people unemployment benefits to live on.

You should know this is not our fault... We as human go for the best....if our market is competitive we will patronized them ...my aunt told me in Spain Moroccan product are well patronized because of their solid goods ...i wont buy the idea. Closing bothers to stop importation as it will not give our local product competition ..even with importation at high rate our local product are gab ...just imagine buying local rice and removing stones nd you can get a non stone rich at slight higher price wont you go for it...have you seen imported beans from western countries u would feel there is nothing like pest that eat beans the bottom lines is despite all this nigerians still patronized our local product life is competition not favoritism

Actually I do not eat regular American long white rice. It's only starch/sugar. I will eat riced milled in the village with mortar & pestle anytime. I choose brown rice, whether Basmati brown or Brown long rice. Because these taste closest to the local rice I had the chance to eat visiting the village as a kid. It turns out they are also far healthier both nutritionally and with high fibre/bran/gem content.

So we're all different. Either way, we still attach much value to imported stuff. All countries that are successful today attach much value to locally made product, even if they still import stuff. With better processing machinery, stones can be removed from locally processed rice. Why do we have all these Universities of Agriculture & Technology?

Over in spain young cows are liked and eating compare to old ones they feel the young ones have more nutrition compare to d old ones but few pple there prefer old cow...just like nigeria will eat polished rice against unpolished nd unpicked ones many are afraid of getting appendix through unpicked rice ...for our institute of agric.....nothing to write home about.... I would tell u no one will be patriotic nd go for less quality competiton brings perfection if our local product are suffering because of imported product they should all close down. i know Nigerian patronized thier good local product i just imagine if they were no competition how would our local product be
