I have been pursuing this job for a while now, its sales executive for a loan company in Lagos. I passed through a recruiting firm where I passed their test and interview. I was also invited for interview with the HR of the organisation which I was successful also. We were told to go for medicals, which I did. I was fit and sound. Good eye sight and all.
The last stage was to see the COO. I was asked to introduce myself and I did. He went through my CV and realised that all my schooling was in Kaduna. He asked if I grew up in Kaduna which I told him yes. And immediately he blatantly told me I couldn't cope in Lagos not minding my level of intelligence or innovative strategy I could have applied to make me successful in that field. It took a lot of courage for someone who grew up in the north to want to start a life in Lagos but he ignored the courage and just stereotyped me. Anyway I later got a regret mail from them but I really do not think people who grew in the north should be sidelined.

.

the truth is that one of the perquisites of engaging a salesman is having worked in that location(no the terrians ) I wonder why they invited u in d first place.the hr don't know his/her job well. believe u me, if they give u dat job, before d next 6 months probation period, u will be under serious pressure.

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR TRIBE. It must be a salesman role, one of its prerequisite, is knowledge of the sales location. It makes it easier for you to manoeuvre with little or no stress/cost. It is also believed you will have your own target market.

The problem here is, the HR goofed. The onus was on them to state the location factor while advertising the vacancy or send invites to people who meet that criteria. That was the point you should have been dropped, not at the final interview. Anyway, that's the Nigerian HR for you.

Next time, always tailor your CV to suit whatever role you are applying for. It helps.

LOCATION is the reason, not an act of tribalism.
Don't worry, something great and better is on the way.
All the best.

smiley lol I've had a similar experience.. I've just been in Lagos for 2 months then, working and still searching for better prospects esp as my current job did not really align with my preferred career path. I was having a good interview until d interviewer realized I've only been in Lagos for 2 months. I was qualified but I can't really fault their decision no to hire me because the Job was 100% on the Field installing networks for different clients around Lagos ! I tried letting them know I am easily adaptable and bla bla bla.. I never got a feedback

I've moved on from that... That Job wasn't mine..

When your own come, na 2 secs, 3 too tay

it may be sterotyping, but this is the thing

1) northerners are very very very laid back. this is the general perception based on experience. we even joke about how some people sent to work up north can no longer adjust when they come back down south.

2) someone has come before you and spoiled ground. a colleague in an previous jb explained that grads from my school had a good rep because the first one employed performed. if the first northerner employed by that company was lazy, that is unfortunately the way all future northern applicants will be perceived.small companies do not have time for trial and error

A company that can't get there recruitment process right definitely won't be paying well. Don't jump on any job to come to Lagos oo. Lagos is stressful and expensive too. Your family don't live in Lagos, that means you will have to squat with a relative before you find your feet. hence, you should ensure you get a well paying job before leaving Kaduna.

We should have outgrown this things as a country. This is where the "One Nigeria" should come into play.

I disagree with this. Going by what the OP said, I think the COO meant that he can't cope with the stress of living in Lagos considering he is not used to such environment in the first place. It has nothing to do with North and dislike. I don't like PMB but it is good to speak the truth, irrespective.

The COO feels the dude is not used to Lagos stress and this might hamper his productivity.

Why hasn't the BLOWBACK from the hate for easterners widespread from the North to West due to IPOB hate speech stopped Ibos from being employed in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano etc? Even after the Kaduna declaration? That's a silly reason you gave bro.

It's a sales position and he needs to understand and have native knowledge of Lagos routes and possibly have an existing network to be an effective marketer. That must have been why Lagos candidates had an edge over him in the end.

@ OP Don't despair bro, greater things are ahead!

Í understand your plight.
I was at an interview recently and immediately I mentioned that I was born and bred in Kaduna the MD made a funny gesture and said hmm Boko Haram.

He completely ignored the fact that I wasn't even from the north, schooled in Ife and that I left Kaduna since early 2000

To say I'm disappointed is an understatement, cos the guy appeared well read and experienced. Obviously he's not exposed. So much negative stereotypes from people who haven't travelled beyond Southern Nigeria.
