I have never experienced one anyway. But I have seen where a bride ran away when it is time to give the wine. The wedding hastily ended and the bridegroom returned home in shame. The reason is that the girl has refused the marriage from the onset but was highly pressured by the mother. The girl later remarried to her heartthrob and is happy with her marriage till date. Coming to ur question, based on the meaning giving wine connotes, the marriage will simply be called off if such happens. The husband will go home embarrassed and only the bride price payed back. This is because the marriage has been rejected and he has no right to sue his pride. He can only collect the bride price if he had paid. The reason why it is uncommon to see such incident is that most marriages are perfected even before the main ceremony. And in Igbo land, there is whole lot of rights which women has to their choice. Forced marriage is very minimal. Although you can find fewchild marriages but in those incidents the girl involved would have agreed pre the marriage date. During the times of our forefathers, the tradition of giving wine to the groom had beauty to it. This was because for a young virgin maiden, there could be about two or three guys vying for her hand in marriage. Those guys usually showed they were good men and capable of taking care of their wives by dropping by every once in a while with either fish , Bush meat or farm produce for the girls family. Although before the wedding , the father of the bride would have decided on whom she will marry. The wine carrying tradition was only like a seal of affirmation before the public that not only had the brides family chosen the man but that she consented to it. Liliyann: The reason that wine is put in your hand is for you to chose your man. By tradition, law and reason you should give it to the one that came for your hand in marriage. But if you run away, refuse or throw the wine away, the marriage ends there and the man will go home in shame with his brideprice in his pocket. On the other hand, if you give it to another man who drinks it amid the uproar that will follow, maybe this man is a lover that you were not allowed to marry... well, I can't say for your father but for me, if you were my sister or daughter, I will allow that man to proceed with the wedding since you have chosen him over the groom.
