Good day all,

Please is it cheaper and better to buy a laptop in the US?
Or should I just go ahead and buy from Nigeria before traveling?

I would say US because it would come with warranty and if it spoils during that time it can be fixed for free. Don't know how naija works with warranty

There are cases where they solicited the services of the agents before they discovered this forum.

Bros can you give me GRE hard copy material for a token

Predstan:
I registered for GRE today and my test date is on hold until i know i can actually face the screen. I need someone to give me a study plan or redirect me to a page where it is already discussed extensively. I have downloaded all the materials online and i have the hardcopy of Kaplan's prep plus 2018. I want to devote two months for the preparation

Hello good people.... The queen of silent followers association over here whup whup

July 21st, 7:30 I was interviewed by the beautiful black American Lady (the young light-skinned one), she was just so calm and focused and it really helped me regain my confidence. Whenever she asked a question I didn't have an immediate answer, I would say excuse me.... The time it takes for her to reply, I was already thinking up an answer. I did breathe-in-breathe-out exercise at the beginning.

She was just staring at me and smiling, not typing much.... I couldn't afford to fidget or flinch at any question.

I: Good morning ma'am

VO: Good morning, and how do you do?
I: I am great, thank you and you?

VO: good, good. pass me just your i20 and passport please. So what's your course of study?
I: Masters of social work at east Tennessee State University in Johnson city Tennessee

VO: what do you do now?
I: I am currently employed at xyz specialist center, a special needs school that caters to children with developmental disorders like autism, ADHD and Down's syndrome. As a program facilitator, my main duties are (she cuts me off, she was cross-checking with my DS160 throughout)

VO: so who would be sponsoring this trip?
I: I got a merit scholarship that covers 50% of my tuition, my great-uncle and sister would cover the rest of my expenses. Then she goes through my i20

VO: Why didn't you apply to more affordable programs?
I: well most of the other schools expect their MSW students to pick a concentration at the second year but since I don't have a BSW nor basic SW knowledge, I wanted programs that offer a generalist practice model where I would be able to experience every aspect of the profession

VO: any standardized tests
I: yes, I sat for the GRE with a score of 314 and IELTS with an overall band score of 8

VO: who would you be staying with? Do you know anyone that has applied to or attending this school?
I: I will be staying on campus at the Buccaneers ridge apartment and already made a deposit. No I don't know anyone at the school

VO: how then did you know about the school
I: I made use of the worksheet available on the EducationUSA website and was able to solidly define my priorities. Then I researched for schools using socialworkdegreeguide.com, usnews, mastersportal and gradcafe and I was able to shortlist the programs fitting my requirements.

VO: What other schools did you apply to and how many admits?
I: southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, University of Maine at Orono, Michigan State University at East Lansing, Ohio State University at Columbus and Georgia State at Atlanta. I was admitted by four of them.

VO: can I have bank statements to backup your claims (handed over my sis first, savings with over #11m) what does your sister do?
I: she is a level 13 civil servant with the Lagos State govt

VO: (just looks at front page of the statement), has she ever left the country?
I: No, she hasn't

VO: looks at my Uncle's (>$100k), where does he reside and what does he do?
I: He stays at Maryland and is a real estates agent

VO: how did he get to the US?
I: (laughing) he's my great-uncle and it would have been rude for me to ask him that, it was a long time ago even before my mum was born. From the stories passed down, I hear he was given a federal scholarship when he was in secondary school and later citizenship, I don't really know specifics, you know how stories can change when passed from generations to generations.

VO: (laughing along with me) congratulations, I would be approving your visa..... Blah blah DHL.... Blah blah i20.... POE
I: thank you ma'am, I do hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
VO: I hope so too, thank you

This is my second interview, was denied June 27th.... Will dig that up and post later.

It would be remiss of me not to thank the wonderful people of this thread especially Texrem (wonderful man with a beautiful soul), Sorelee, Walsprings, lagosismyhome, profojah, meritdee and sponge3.

V.o - what year did u get this?
Me- 2012
V.o - What av u been doing since then?

V.o - why are u going for a program different from ur first degree
Me - * I didn't expect this question since mba is kind of like a general degree so I just sed something about since I graduated, I've been doing jobs related to business*
V.o - what's ur job description?
I manage day to day activities of the company, keep records of a portfolio of investments, attend seminars, conferences etc as requested the associates , do valuation work, deal.. ( then she cut me off)
V.o - That is the job of an executive assistant , what is the job of an analyst ?
Me - * I then explained my duties again and said that is the title given to me at work and that is my job description..

Then she brought out blue paper and sed she will advice me to reapply...

awwwwnn.. Sorry for the denial. On a side Note, I have always advocated strict formalism with mild western humor ( for those familiar with american sitcom type jokes) during the visa interview. Adding Ma/Sir, and greeting the VO like you do your parents, and worse of all asking "how was your Night" are all just nonsense grin grin. A hi, or hello is just more than enough. you no fit pay person 57K come dey answer am oga madam!, be damn proud of yourself!!.

Me- goodmorning
V.o - pass me your documents * I passed it*
V.o - why this mba?

your answer's weren't that bad, but I suspect two things, either the corporate reject that interviewed you didn't know that an MBA was a general purpose degree or she was just expecting you to say it in words. The MBA clearly does all you have stated, and further helps in Networking. grin grin
V.o - whats your highest degree
Me- I have a bachelor of science degree in masscommunication from xyz university
V.o - what year did u get this?
Me- 2012
V.o - What av u been doing since then?
Me - after my compulsory Nysc , I got a job with jumia Nigeria as a sales consultant, which I did for about two years before I got my present job as an analyst
Your undergrad degree is a liberal arts/ humanities degree which is just perfect for MBA progression. But I think presenting yourself as an analyst and going on to describe something else was a dent ( but still not enough to ruin your interview)
V.o - why are u going for a program different from ur first degree
Me - * I didn't expect this question since mba is kind of like a general degree so I just sed something about since I graduated, I've been doing jobs related to business*
Not surprised, as I feel the only difference between Nigerian Civil service workers and their american counterparts is the bribe taking part, as per intelligence, No difference. How on earth does a consular officer not know that an MBA has no strict undergraduate degree prerequisite, and isn't considered any form of change. Then Again I think your confidence level want at its best hence your inability to state the obvious to the consular
You flopped a little here; Not saying you're not an analyst, but the image that pops into peoples heads when you mention "analyst", and what you described aren't too similar. Some Bland talk about statistics, data, and consulting buzz words would have saved the day grin grin
V.o - did u take any entrance exam to get this?
* I didn't know she meant GRE at first so I sed no, then she started typing and then it clicked to me that GRE is also part of entrance requirements so I then sed, ohhh I actually wrote GRE and brought it out to show her ..
Then she brought out blue paper and sed she will advice me to reapply...
Again, Not so great confidence level
I didn't get the chance to talk about my school at all or my graduate assistantship( I have a full tuition waiver)..it was really extremely painful..this was my first attempt.
Sorry about that.
Verdict: I didn't get the Name of your school, so I can't say that the choice of school didn't contribute to the denial. But, Your confidence Level could be compared to that of Nigeria's U-21 playing against Real Madrid grin. Your portfolio is great, you've got age on your side (I assume), and Nice Financial Aid. You've just been unfortunate to be interviewed by a not so intelligent breed of consular officers. So, pick your self up by the bootstraps, Refine your answers, Build up some damn confidence and reapply (Hoping its not a visa mill school)
CAVEAT: I'm Neither a VO or have any experience in visa obtainment grin grin grin, so take this post with just a pinch of salt.
Edit: Congratulations Nahum777, deeply sorry I couldn't reply your mail

Village people had nothing to do with this. It's very obvious she didn't prepare at all. If she had prepared a little she would have gotten it. Even the VO did her best to make sure she stands a chance but she couldn't prove anything. What she needs is thorough preparation by reading previous transcripts and I can bet she would get her visa on her next interview.
