The guy took it as joke but there are certain things you dont joke with. Your friends should reverence and have healthy interaction with your parents. There is nothing wrong in saying "hey sweetie Im with mother, say hello to her". He was trying to joke but it went other way. The mother should not be offended, i hope. In fact she should appreciate that the girl's behaviour shows affection for her son.
