No root isn't compulsory especially if you don't know your way around it. You can enjoy your device as it is.

Maybe you can add a little cash and get the redmi note 5 (3/32gb) better than the redmi 5 plus in performance and also camera.

I looked at the more recent Mi 6 but was well beyond my budget.

Several Xiaomi of 2017 are running Nougat with no ota plan for Oreo.

I considered Mi 5 for the support starting from Marshmallow to Nougat and now to Oreo. Most phones dont get that kind of support. If Oreo is its last, am good with it.

All of you complaining of long ba3 charging time on redmi 5 plus should try and get a fast charge. The phone actually has quick charge feature but the follow come charger doesnt support it. Thank me later

Tip- Use Google drive for downloads, if the ROM is uploaded or mirrored on GDrive... Use that. For movies TFPDL uploads on GDrive. It's always faster
